Has anyone used one of those binocular cameras before? How are they?

Do you mean stereoscopic cameras or zoom cameras?

I haven't seen a stereoscopic camera in a long time. I think they would be as easy to use as ordinary cameras. There is probably an easy trick to winding the film between shots since each shot takes two pictures staggered along the film. After the pictures are printed you need a stereo viewer such as the one James is holding in one of the Carousel of Progress side show scenes.

Zoom cameras are easy to use, usually with one lever to zoom in and out with. Almost always what you see in the viewfinder zooms also so what you see is what you get. When you zoom in you need to hold the camera extra steady and carefully to avoid a blurred picture.

To me, only optical zoom counts for picture quality in a digital camera. Digital zoom gives a picture no sharper than looking at the printed picture using a magnifying glass or using the picture resizing option (if any) in the computer software that comes with the camera. Blur from accidentally shaking the camera is not reduced using digital zoom compared with optical zoom. I would say digital zoom is useful only if you want the pictures printed at the park for immediate sending to relatives as postcards.

Just saw one on a Christmas gifts for techies show - I think they look pretty neat but that was my first time seeing them so I have no idea how they work and the quality.

I was wondering too. DH mentioned getting a pair for birding.

Bump...Still wondering if anyone has tried this type of camera. I'm thinking of buying one, because I can get a good deal on one.

I got DD17 a pair of binoculars with a camera last year - she was going to Africa and wanted it for the safaris. The pictures looked good, but we haven't been able to get any farther than that - there seems to be a glitch in the software somewhere, and we haven't been able to download the pics. So if you get this, make you sure you have a test run first before you take once-in-a-lifetime pictures you can't recover!!!

You're welcome - just wanted to save you from having to carry them around the rest of your life saying, "Hey, want to see my great pictures? Just look through this pair of binoculars!!!"

Luckily, DD had another camera and many friends who were all taking pictures of the same scenes, so we were able to get copies of what she really wanted, but it was still disappointing, so a test run would be wise!!!!

Obviously like any product they have good and bad. I've used them once and the photo quality was very poor. I would check the pixel count and how much the photos are degrading at zoom levels.
