Bin Laden - celebrations

Why are we comparing numbers of deaths... one death is too many...

and ether way Freyja is entitled to her opinion..

No one has to prove they were affected more by any of these terror attacks to have an opinion!!

We are ALL entitled to our opinion. People can't stir the pot and then try to take it back. Why is she asking how many people he killed personally? Why does that matter, does it make him any less evil?

No it doesn´t. I guess it is true that curiosity killed the cat :rotfl:

My "comparison" was just meant as a response to those who kept telling me that since I wasn´t American I couldn´t possible begin to imagine what it was like to experience 9/11 and others who in response had pointed out that there in fact where lots of other nationalities who lost their people that day.

I understand why you did that ... and i know it was in response to some posts...

Dont' worry about them saying you can't have an opinion because you are not American.. the same folks would probably tell me I am not American or Patriotic enough because of my opinion...
it is all very sad....

I am responding to her original post/opinion... not any twists or turns taken throughout this thread....

Let's look at the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan--we can all appreciate how bad it was....but someone living in Japan or living in the location of the tsunami are going to have an entirely different POV than someone out of country but not at home versus someone out of country who knows someone there vs someone who has no connection but feels compassion and empathy towards those who have suffered.

You can certainly have an opinion--all they were trying to say is that you couldn't understand in the same way and you have failed in trying to prove how you understand just as much as they because you had a higher percentage of fellow patriots lost. You seemed to be much more focused in condemning celebration than you were in trying to actually read and understand the meaning behind their words.

They were not speaking of numbers. They were speaking of simple geography.

I haven´t pretended to understand. Everyone´s experience of certain events is different from the others. That even goes for people within the same country.
I have simply stated an opinion and have on many occasions in this thread stated that my opinion is just that. An opinion. Nothing more nothing less.
I have no problem with other´s having a different opinion.

You are correct , but they were also presuming that all Americans found the celebrations OK and that is incorrect. And if location matters I am just outside of NYC and could see the WTC from my backyard and also had friends who lost close family members and I went to memorial services...

I was just told on facebook by someone who lives in Jordan. And I quote.

"watch and read what america did in iraq and afaghanstan and if we compare this with what osama america become wanted because she did the same and more osama Not a terrorist ,america is the mother of Terrorism"

Sounds like they need to work on their English.

I would unfriend them. Immediately.

I'm not going to criticize their English... because frankly it's the only language I speak...

Just wondering who 'they' are?

I don't think we can presume to speak for anyone but ourselves. It's an opinion and we all have one. I don't think for a second that mine would change anyone else's.

From the beginning I found the word disgusting to be a trigger that made me offensive. Its such a strong word. That coupled with the comparison in the first post definitely struck a chord in me.

Clearly. But on that not, not all non-Americans share the same sentiment as the OP and are cheering alongside the cheering Americans. (and I stated that earlier in the thread, but it seems to have been ignored)

Location does not matter at all. It doesn't make it okay to act Holier than thou though which is the vibe I am getting from many people today with their endless scripture quotes, misquoted MLK quotes. There is an air of arrogance to it and it just rubs me the wrong way. And since that is my opinion...I'm sure there is no problem for stating it.

Who knew? All Osama ever needed was a big hug??

The "they" the poster speaks of, I understood to be the people whom I was referencing who took the OP to task for her location rendering her opinion merit less.

Much of the thread was to say how they were "wrong" for their opinion.

I agree about the use of the word "disgusted". I'm of the opinion it was used intentionally because it is so harsh a word. There were other ways to express the sentiment of being disturbed or disappointed with the observed "glee" over the death of another human.

That is saying a lot. :sad2:

You´re absolutely right. Disturbed would probably have been a much better word, but one which unfortunately did not come to mind when I was writing my post. Now that you´ve pointed it out I admit that it fits my feelings much better than disgusted.

That being said, and I am NOT trying to make excuses, I must remind my fellow Dis´ers that English is not my native language.

To be fair, its a fair criticism. I assume that person wrote that to get a reaction, most likely from their English speaking "friends". If one wants to send a message, they should make sure its intelligble, otherwise its pointless to make. Sure you can get the gist of the message, but the poor English doesn't help make a big impact IMO. I guess what I'm saying is that I wouldn't pay it too much mind, it just seems like a jibberish rant.

I agree. And this too, is an opinion that disgusts me. How about others here on this thread? Don´t you feel strongly about this comment, without having walked in this person´s shoes?

Is it?
I must admit this FB comment made a huge impact on me, despite the poor English.

Understandable.

Quite honestly, I came into this thread as Switzerland. I am really neutral on the "celebration". I don't want to judge those who do it, but I don't want to celebrate a dead man either.

I simply was trying to be helpful by trying to make sense of how *I* understood others and seemed to have failed.

I think you communicate eloquently for English not being your first language.
