Bin Laden - celebrations

Let me start by saying how happy I am that Bin Laden was caught. I think it´s amazing that the US Army was able to find him after all these years!
BUT....and yes, there is a but, I am disgusted by the celebrations in the streets. Just as much as I was disgusted by seeing muslim celebrations after 9/11.

Before this thread gets locked, I would like to point out, that we don't celebrate like the muslims. As far as I know, there were no flag burnings of Afghan flags, no burning of homemade OBL dolls in effigy, nothing but joy for the death of a man who is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. Our celebrations vs their celebrations is apples and oranges. Theirs was hate, ours is joy.

Neither did I. I said my best friends lost friends. They had both been working in firms in the twin towers.
However, I do not need to know the people who died personally to feel horrible about what happened!!!

So as an English Person whose country and city were attacked and was stuck in the middle of the carnage of 7/7 with my 16 month old son in a stroller can I say something or you know did Osama Bin Laden only attack America so only Americans can have an opinion?

And was OK when Americans were fundraising for NORAID to fund terror attack on British soil?

Frankly, I don't care.

The United States is used to being criticized- until our help is needed.

With that- I am bowing out because apparently a thread like this was already locked today.

I did not like watching the celebrations either. I wasn't disgusted (or angry and appalled like I was when I saw the celebrating after 9/11). Matter of fact, family members and I have been disagreeing about this at home today. And I am a New Yorker - was in NY when 9/11 happened - and I don't feel the celebrating is 'right'. So I don't think it has anything to do with being from here, or there - just differing opinions.

I agree. I find it very disturbing that so many people are treating it like a sporting event and our "team" won. Innocent people have died. Soldiers are still in harm's way. It's a serious situation and the partying in the streets seems to be making light of it. The celebrations in the street remind me too much of celebrations in the Middle East.

Bin Laden is gone, thank heavens, but terrorism will still continue and I'm worried about an uptick in events. My dd's boyfriend is in Afghanistan right now and I'm worried about his safety and those who are fighting with him. I'd prefer to hold off on the celebrations until everyone is home.

And I am wondering why this thread would get closed? It´s just a thread to voice my opinion on the matter like so many other threads here. If the only threads that get closed are the one stating similar opinions to mine, I find that quite interesting...

Our celebrations don't involve burning anything in effigy, burning other countries' flags or shouting for the downfall of an entire country or religion. And we're not calling for further killings.

Really? It was my sons first day of preschool and one of the Dad's had a sister who worked in the WTC..... the look in his eyes haunts me to this day.

If I do know people affected by it, I don't know that I know them. As far as I know, nobody I know lost loved ones in the attacks. Which I guess is unlikely considering I'm in Buffalo and I lived in PA and MD at one point.

I agree with you. Not your opinion... just your right to have it.

Having read the OP of the thread that was closed, I'm not at all surprised that it was. I think it's a topic than can be discussed rationally. I'm just not convinced that the collective "we" of the Dis actually know how to do that.

We all have different reactions to things, based on our own beliefs and life experiences.

No, because the debate became heated and political.

The celebrations, as someone mentioned, are symbolic and cathartic. Mostly they are impromptu. They are not supposed to be indicative of national policy. But some people are truly thankful and relieved and yes even joyful that this man can't hurt anyone any more.

And we know that. You have been on the boards long enough that we know what kind of person you are (a good one!). Our perspective is just different from yours. But it's your opinion and you have the right to express it. But don't expect it to not rub some of us the wrong way. This is a major victory and I'm glad he was killed and not captured. And that's my opinion. And I'm a major peacenik.

Swalphin, I disagreed with you on another thread, but you know what? It's like how I can criticize my own kids but someone else better not---meaning when I read the OP, I got angry! I can criticize MY country because I love my country, but don't be criticizing MY country on an important thing like how Americans choose to react when you are not one of "us". No one can understand what we as Americans have gone through unless you're an American (or whatever) living here.

I feel a bit ashamed to admit this, but so be it.
