Biggest Loser "Sizzlin' Hot" Summer Challenge

Hi everyone, i'm a little late to the party but i'm going to jump on this wagon for the rest of the summer. my name's kate, i'm a nurse that works 12 hour night shifts. the older i get the less my body appreciates this. food at work can be a terrible temptation. people bring stuff in all the time. or we order out because we didnt bring anything to eat. trying to get away from those habits is very challenging. i was sitting here (on the disboards) being depressed about my weight and i started to read some of the threads. it motivated me to get off the computer and take a walk. so 1/2 mile later i'm back. feel good i did something. little steps count. i just wanted to thank you guys for the motivation, i hope i can keep it up.

Hello everyone :goodvibes

Just jumping in quickly to say that I'll be posting this week's results tomorrow night.

Janis mentioned that she had trouble getting onto the DIS and we're still missing about 30% of the weigh-ins this week, so maybe a lot of people are having the same problem.

I'll move the deadline up 24 hours and see if more people have luck tonight or tomorrow :confused3

So, if you haven't PM'd me, keep those weigh-ins coming :thumbsup2

Hi Kate,
Welcome to the party :goodvibes

When you have a chance, please PM me your starting weight and a goal if you have one that you'd like me to track until the end of this challenge in August.

We're glad to have you aboard :thumbsup2

QOTD for Monday June 18

Leaving Peter Pan and feeling like a child again it is time to take a boat ride into the musical world of children sharing our world. it's a small world celebrates the fact that we are all part of the same world sharing the same moon and sun, sharing the fact that a smile means friendship wherever you go, and that when we look at it the commonalities across cultures really help to show how small the world really is.

think about the fact that this attraction has it's roots in the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York which means the attraction is quickly approaching it's 50th Anniversary. In those 50 years the world has continues to get smaller as communication and technology have brought us closer together. Look at this thread for example, we have challengers from 4 countries on two sides of the world.

But these children with theie joyous song of harmony can also encourage us to look at our own small world that we have built around us--our family, friends and colleagues-- and we can ask ourselves how much do I really share with them.

In this journey to helathier living, it is important to have a support system for encouragement when times are hard and celebration when times are good. We have the DIS for the extended support, but what about in our small world?

So multi-faceted question today:Have you developed a support system in your small world away from the DIS? Is someone nearby on the journey as well? Is your family supportive or do they think it is a joke becasue you've tried this many times before? Are your friends there to help or are they enables to food and drink? Do your colleagues know you are trying to lose weight or is that a definitey area to avoid conversation at work? How are you sharing your journey within your small world?

BONUS thought for the day

How can you adapt one of your favorite international food recipes to make it more friendly to your nutritional plan? Have you ever explored the high amounts of sodium and fat that are in some otherwise healthy looking international foods?

All of my friends are amazing to help, and so are all my co-workers. And my mom! We're both on WW. with the same remaining amount of weight to lose, and so now it's like a competition to see who gets there first. And even my DBF is supportive of me- even though I constantly tease him by asking him if he thinks I'm fat...just to mess with him ;) (I can be so mean, lol)

Buffy, I hope you feel better!!!

I bought two books today, Flat Belly Diet and Fast Food Nation, i'm hoping thye at least prove interesting.I'm also hoping fast food nation inspires me to stop eating fast food!

I made some bad choices eating wise today, a soda and peanut m&ms! I tried to make up for it by a healthy dinner. Roasted sweet potato and yellow squash and a turkey burger. Tomorrow will hopefully be a better day.

QOTD - My best friend is a big support system for me and so is my boyfriend. I try to be a support system for my family, because both my mom and dad are dangerously over weight and refuse to do anything about it. It's very upsetting to me, and i try to inspire them to eat healthy but they really don't. They are not the biggest support system. They often criticize me for eating healthy or don't understand why i get upset when they cook the way they do. Last night my dad got mad at me because i said i couldn't have milk. i guess i don;t have the biggest support system but i try to support myself.

I did some cleaning today which was much needed and made me feel better. My closet is still a mess and clothes need to be put away which is my least favorite thing, but i spent half an hour folding some clothes which is a start.

Ok i want to start reading so i'm going to go!

Do your colleagues know you are trying to lose weight or is that a definitey area to avoid conversation at work? How are you sharing your journey within your small world?

As I've always said, I'm the luckiest person in the world. To be brutally honest, I'm trying to lose weight on the down-low this time. Not sure why -- except perhaps because I work with super-fit ultra runners every day! But I have told my two best girlfriends (who are very supportive) and my DH, who has decided that he would also like to lose weight. Heck, since he does 90% of the cooking, that's important! So he and I are helping support each other in our weight loss journey. (I'm down nearly 15 pounds in the past several weeks, while he's down nearly 9 pounds in the last 4 weeks! Yay Wil!)

We also briefly talked about the marathon. He recommended the 1/2 instead of the full. He's worried about injuries and if I get hurt then I would be turned off by running again. I don't know, we'll see what happens with training.

Well crap, I just looked and the marathon is 57% full and the half is 51% full so I guess I need to decide sooner rather than later.

I need to talk to DH and see if he even wants to do it. Or I may just go solo. I don't really want to go solo but I will.

Buffy, I agree with Christoper. Deciding between the half and the full is something only you can do. But I think you could set your mind to getting through either. Will you be sad if you walk more than you run, but still finish the full marathon? Or will you just be thrilled to cross the finish line and get that big, beautiful, 20th anniversary medal?

I've got a half coming up this weekend -- a lot of people I work with are running it, and I fully expect to come in "last" in my employee group. That said, that would probably happen if I were fully fit! But I reminded myself that I love the "event" -- I love watching people persevere... struggling and yet continuing. I love the nervous runners in the starting corrals, the cheering volunteers, the determined looks on the faces of my fellow runners. I especially love the people who are just so darn happy to finish. Every time I finish a race I remember my first race, and how proud and happy (and tired!) I was. Not to get all goopy or anything, but it makes me feel part of a community, and makes me absurdly happy. Even if I have had a really tough day out on the course, I know there are others who have overcome far more to be there that day. And that inspires me, and makes me really really happy.

Which I guess is a long way of saying that I hope you decide to run. :)

Possible TMI but health question

I'm wondering if anyone has had the problem i'm having right now. The other day after my run which was friday my breasts felt kind of sore, and i thought it was just from the you know...jiggiling. They are still bothering me today, not 100% of the time, but they are very sore. I took a pregnancy test today and it was negative which i thought it would be, but i'm not sure why they would be sore. I have read that caffiene can affect your breasts, but i'm not sure how credible this is. I have no had coffee in quite awhile and i had it on friday and then again today.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this. I know it's nothing to do with weight loss but you ladies know far more than i do about many things, so i thought i would ask...plus its bothering me.

I'm going to the doctor tomorrow so maybe i'll mention it to him, thanks in advance if anyone has any advice

I swear to you the DIS ate my homework.....

I had a nice reply all ready to go with internal quote from you all when the DIS deceided to make it all disappear...... twice

So I reply in shortened format....my apologies!

Shawn I wish I could find low fat chees options here to beable to do bette Mexican. But the land of cheese does not believe in low fat versions so I find I am avoiding cheese all together as of now.

Beth I have not been to it but there is a recipe thread that mayn of the challengers rave about. Check it out for inspiration as you get your challnge going!

Lisah Yes I can see tht the Summer Challenge is a bit slower. It it nice though to have somewhere to check in and for the coach a little les daunting for the replies. Especially when the DIS is a bad boy.

Liz AKL and the ships have great Fitness Centers that you can use. I tried a spinning class for the first time when I was sailing at Easter. They are free but are filled quickly. Head to Senses on Deck 11 Forward shortly after boarding the ship and check it out. I also recommend avoiding the elevators. I was on the ships for 11 nights and used the elevators only 2 times (when I had luggage that was too heavy to carry up the stairs). Using the stairs will combat the extras that you have at the buffet.

Tracey Sounds like you are in the storm before the calm. You'll make it. Just picture sun and sand and relaxing on the deck!

Kayla Best wishes on your DCP pursuit. I loved working at WDW and know deep down that I will get back there to work again one day even if it is not until retirement.

Kate Welcome and great job getting a walk in right away. We look forward to getting to know you.

Sue As always :thanks: for being our weight keeper. I look forward to celebrating our success tomorrow. And I am ok with holding onto the BL title for an extra 24 hours. ;)

trinaweena Sometimes people who also need to lose weight will do their best to sabatoge us (conciously or subconciously) in our weigt loss journey. It is easier for them to see us fail than to acknoledge our success and accept that they can do something about their own state if they made the effort too. Just keep positive and stick with us!

And I can't advise directly on your jogging problem but I will say that I think there should not be a "maybe I will mention it to him" when ti comes to your doctor visit today. Just tell him and ask his advice. He knows you and your medical history and has the professional knowledge. Just ask and get the best advice you can from the pro.

Dumbo has his feather to inspire him. What physical object do you have to keep you inspired?

disappearing otter I love your words of encouragement for Buffy. I just am reminded of some words of one of the wisest men to ever live.... If you can dream it, you can do it! Good ol' Walt knew it so we should believe it too and strive for what we want.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
OK so know I am going to copy all my replies incase the DIS is bad again.
It did...glad I copied
Best wishes on your Tuesday! We are already on the back have of Week 3 of the challenge. Weigh in is just around the corner.

Are you following your plan? Drinking your water? Planning your 3 course meal? In other words, How are your Healthy Habits?

BRB with the QOTD. Have a great day

QOTD for Tuesday June 19

dumbo-the-flying-elephant-VmsQ.jpg

You have to venture a bit deeper into Fantasyland now to find our next friend. He has moved to the back of the park and has his own area of Storybook Circus. But Dumbo, regardless of where he flies has always relied on his inspirational feather to get him through.

Do you have a physical object that you keep in a prominent place to serve as your inspiration to keep on your journey? If so, what is it? If not, can you think of anything that you could use as your inspirational reminder?

I don't have any particular object. I guess my kids would be my inspiration right now, particularly my lil princess. I want to make sure she doesn't grow up with a weight problem. She is super active and I want to keep up. As for yesterdays QOTD, I don't really have a support system. My family knows I am trying to lose weight, but they do not actively help me. Kinda apethetic, which is ok since I like to keep it to myself. My mom is also forbidden to comment on if I look like I lost weight. It seems everytime she says that I gain 10 lbs right away.

I didn't do the weight watchers, I don't think I am focused enough for that. I hate planning things out and keeping track. I can do it here and there, but I lose interest really fast. For me everything is just a day to day matter.

Good morning Losers!:goodvibes

No, I do not have a physical object to focus on but that is a great idea. I have heard of that before but never used one. It would be nice to have something you could put in your pocket and just hold or rub for inspiration. Sometimes I need something to "remind" me I need and want to eat healthy.
I find myself a lot of times thinking "Darn, I was going to be good today - I forgot!":rotfl2:

I did not get my weight turned in yesterday so looks like I have another chance to do it today.

Moved a bunch of little stuff over last night "Clamplett" style. You have to be a certain age to know who the "Clampetts" are so sorry for all the young'uns on the challenge:laughing: We have hired someone to do a move out cleaning at the rental house Thursday so we have to have every last thing out before then. We have maybe one or two more car loads to go:woohoo:

Tracey, what else can happen to you!!!:hug: Glad to hear your Dad's allright. Are they going back to NC while you guys are on vacation?

Time to get to work.......make it a great Tuesday losers!

Shawnprincess:

Hi everyone!

QOTD/Object...I hadn't really thought about it, but I think it's my clothes. My smaller clothes. I haven't kept the bigger clothes because I don't want the safety zone of gaining weight back. And my beautiful new clothes are a daily reminder of the work I did to get here (and the work I need to do to stay here!).

Christopher, I'm looking forward to trying the fitness center! Not sure yet if I'll do a class, if just because they may fill up before I sort out our schedule, but I'm definitely planning on some exercise on the cruise. DH and I are planning on the Castaway Cay 5K, which should help! :)

I was out for Chinese food last night - a rare treat! But I'm feeling the extra bloat from it this morning, and I didn't even overdo it. :P Thank goodness that will go away today...

In full countdown mode for Friday's departure! The girls still don't know, and I think they don't even suspect, about the cruise. Packing in stealth mode continues...

I don't mind walking, I just want to finish in time to get a medal for either race. My biggest fear for the full is getting swept. I'm about 99% sure I can finish the 1/2 no problem. The full, not real positive about that one.
I really really want that 20th since DH and I are celebrating our 20th later that spring. It's stupid, I know, and I know I could aim for the 25th instead but Lord knows what will happen in 5 years, ya know.
ACK!! Go away self-degradation!!!

I don't know, I guess I have a lot of soul searching to do in the next week or so.

Yes, caffeine can affect Breast tenderness, I've noticed mine are not as bad now that I've stopped drinking soda.
It seems like you might have to same issue I had. My pain was way on the outside of the breast near the armpit. Now being 38 my concern was cancer so I talked to my DR about it, we did a mammogram and everything was fine. What seemed to be the issue was my breasts were changing from weight loss, age, and redistribution. My bras just weren't fitting right anymore (I wore minimizers).
Do you wear Bras with underwire? My pain was caused my the underwire pushing into the sides to hard and not laying in the right place.
Have you had a professional bra fitting? There is a place in RI that does it, they've been around forever.
Are you wearing a sports bra alone or with something underneath? I wear a regular bra and a sports bra because the girls are on the big side. LOL
Oh and are you due to have your period soon? That can cause soreness too.

But yes, you should talk to your DR about it since you are going to be there anyway.

QOTD for Tuesday June 19

Do you have a physical object that you keep in a prominent place to serve as your inspiration to keep on your journey? If so, what is it? If not, can you think of anything that you could use as your inspirational reminder?

I have a necklace that DH bought my for Christmas. It has a camera on it and it says "Capture life" I started wearing it when I was training for the Everest Challenge so no I wear it when I run.

Quote of the day

Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air

Do you have a physical object that you keep in a prominent place to serve as your inspiration to keep on your journey? If so, what is it? If not, can you think of anything that you could use as your inspirational reminder?

No. I do have a closet full of clothes I want to fit back into but I don't keep anything out so I see it all the time. I do have a picture of myself when I was at my smallest that I think about all the time. It is from just before I went to boot camp. I am only 20 pounds or so from that weight again!

QOTD for Sunday June 17

We know we can not really stay young for ever, but how do you strive to stay young at heart?

I think DSs and DH keep me young at heart. Sometimes I just have to throw my type A personality out the door and try to relax and have a good time. Even if it messes with my plans lol.

Jill, congrats on the successful yard sale. Good luck with the roof. I hate things like that and making those decisions. I continue to second guess myself long after things are over.

Thanks. And, we still haven't made a decision yet. DH and I are not decision makers when it comes to this kind of stuff, so I told him he needs to step up to the plate!

My family is very supposrtive. DH has been open to trying new dinner ideas and so have DSs. I am also sharing this with a few friends of of course, all you losers!

I don't have a specific recipe in mind, but I try to avoid/limit fattier meats and cheeses. If someone can tell me how to make a low fat/low cal tiramisu, I'd be forever in your debt :)

Jill, glad your DS is feeling better! :thumbsup2

Thanks!

We're on the final run toward vacation this week! I've started putting the pack piles in their proper places (pre-cruise night stay, cruise/AKL bags, the bag to stay in the car, the bag we'll need when we get on the Dream - ack!). School is OUT :banana: so the week is much easier with regard to getting the girls up and out. I work through Thursday. I'll pack the car with the big stuff after the girls go to bed on Thursday night. Then I'll sleep Thursday night until about 2pm Friday, at which point I'll finish packing the car. Then DH and I will go pick up the girls and surprise them with their first ever Disney cruise! I cannot believe we've managed to keep this a secret for over a year. It's exhausting. :lmao: Especially when DD7 tells us how BADLY she wants to go on a Disney cruise and it looks like SO much fun and MOMMY can we PLEASE go on one SOON? They're going to flip out. Hopefully we'll get good video...

Happy Monday, everyone!

I don't know how you're keeping this a secret! I'd be bouncing off the walls. I can't wait to hear how they react!

Man, did I kill the thread?!?!?

so I went to the DR and I have bronchitis and a sinus infection. Oh the joy!
So I got the Z-pac which I know works well.

Sorry you're sick. Hope the meds have kicked in and you're felling better.

Well... I've decided to apply in January for the Fall '13 DCP as a photopass photographer. Emailed my college advisor to get everything laid out. I'm excited! Now...time to edit some more photos!

How cool! I hope it works out for you!

I don't have a physical object. My inspirational reminders are my kids and my clothes. They motivate me daily.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've had a busy few days. We just took the dog to the vet for a checkup and bordetella so she can be boarded while we hit the beach soon. I can't believe we leave for vacation next Friday. Usually I have lists going by now. I better start tonight.
Other than that, not much is happening here in western PA except the heat. Mid to upper 90s today through Thursday. Yuck. It's so humid for running outside, too, but I do not llike running distances on the treadmill. My pace is so much faster outside than on the tm, too. Guess I'll be doing my running late tomorrow night when it's cooled off.
I am going to try to make DH make a decision on this roof today, so we can have it started when we get back from NC. I'm so jealous of all the people going to wdw and cruises. We'll be back next year...but it's so far away!!
Off to get some laundry and cleaning done. I'll check in again soon. Have a great day :)
I have a wonderful support system outside of DIS. My mom is on this journey so we support each other. My husband tries to help me by making sure that there are always good choices in the house and helping by not bringing my favorite fast foods home with him. My colleagues do not know because they are all small women that can eat whatever they want. Plus when I have told them in the past, they have always kept offering to buy me food for lunch and I just dont think that they understand what it is like to be on this journey.
Bonus: My favorite food is sushi, so it is pretty easy to adapt. I can order sashimi and get things with out the sauces. One way that I have been successful when eating this food is drinking tons of water to make sure it flushes the sodium out of my system.
Great questions Christopher.
I have never been able to wear a 2 piece bathing suit in my life, except when I was like 5. I know it may sound cheesy but I have one that I bought and really like pinned up in our kitchen so that whenever I walk in there it is the first thing that I see. It has made me really question when I go in there if I am really hungry or just searching out of bordem. I think that I need to come up with something small and discreet that I can keep with me at work to remind me of my goal during the day.
Happy (finally) sunny Tuesday my friends!
Just a quick pop on to say Hi! DD started Driver's Ed (FINALLY!:woohoo: ) yesterday and today and tomorrow are home swim meets (which means me working at the timing system/computer for both days) and DH is away.... so things are a bit hectic.
That said, I did hit the gym this morning while DD was at Driver's Ed (instead of going out to breakfast and shopping :rolleyes1). I think I should try to make it a habit for at least one of the two mornings she will be at DE this summer. And of course, when we returned today after gym/DE it was lunch, laundry, showers, etc..... and now I have 4 minutes to get out the door, as I have three stops to make on the way to the pool.
Got a GREAT recipe to share for this week's recipe.... just need the time to get it posted! I'll just say it is a PERFECT recipe for summer's garden abundance!
Not even enough time right now to answer the QOTD.... oh well. See you all tomorrow!....................P
::MickeyMo Afternoon everyone!
Sorry, I haven't been around much the last few days. We left for Daytona Beach early Friday morning. The new car is awesome for road trips! We stayed at the Holiday Inn resort and had a relaxing time. I walked a mile on Friday and Saturday and didn't work out Sunday as its my relax day. We also headed home that night so I was back in time for my reproductive endocrinologist appointment Monday morning.
My latest Sparkpeople blog:
WOW! What an appointment and all I can say is I want to strangle that OB/GYN in TX! Yeah I find it funny how “Your fine, nothing is wrong” has turned into “You have PCOS and metabolic syndrome.” She does an ultrasound on me and I have over 50 cysts on one ovary and 25 on the other!! Oh yeah but I’m FINE and nothing is wrong with me according to the quack in TX. GRRR….
Plan of action:
Alan goes in Thursday afternoon to have his um, manly parts checked.
Labs have been requested and I need to make an apt tomorrow to get those done. After the pregnancy test comes back negative they want me to take Provera for 12 days. She also prescribed Pregnitude which is a prenatal vitamin.
I need a referral to a hematologist to determine if in fact I need to stay on blood thinners. She said if I have to stay on them then I’ll have to take daily injections of either Lovenox or Heprin. I also need to get my medical records from my hematologist in TX and have those sent to her.
I need a referral to a gynocologist for an annual pap smear
She wants me on a diabetic diet and wants me to continue to exercise and lose weight
She said once everything is done (see above) then they’ll schedule a follow up to figure out the next step.
My lab work is scheduled for tomorrow morning and I'm still waiting to hear back about my referrals.
I woke up early today because I had a blonde moment thinking my lab work was today. After reading the confirmation email I realized I scheduled it for tomorrow. WHEW!
Nothing much going on around here today. I got a 30 minute swim in after walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Breakfast and lunch are both ate and tracked and dinner is thawing out. We're having steak, baked potatoes, and asparagus.
I can't have anything after 8pm so working on trying to get all of my water in before then. Now to catch up on the thread!
Toodles! :tinker:
