Biggest Loser Fall Challenge!

I weighed in today and was up .2 after being up 3.0 last week. Time to get back on track. I am hoping to do the Komen 3 Day next year as well as the Hy-Vee Triathlon. I have to do better.

I found out that I have multiple food allergies several months ago through IGG antibody testing. This is apparently what was causing IBS. I am allergic to beef, casein (which is in dairy), gluten, and eggs. So basically, I am a gluten free vegan, except that I just haven't done it. I need some motivation to really eat better. I know I'll feel better but it's just so much easier to get drive through which is not allergy friendly. I need to do better.

We're staying at Baylake Tower in a studio lake view using our DVC. This will be the 1st time we've stayed in a studio there so it'll be interesting to see how small they are. Now, I'm off to check the weather report!

Toodles! :tinker:

Have a great trip. I hope you have lovely weather:goodvibes

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you? [/B]

I am amazed at some things mostly those at resturants or fast food. Like the natural grilled chicken sandwich and fries at red robins was over 1000 calories. Not that I thought it was healthy but was just blown away by how much the calories actually were. I never counted calories much until a few months ago but it is definitely an eye opener.

Did you hand it over, because someone told you weren’t beautiful enough, thin enough, smart enough, good enough?
Why the hell would you listen to them?
Did you consider they might be full of crap?

Wouldn’t that be nuts, to tell my little girl below that in another five or ten years she might hate herself because she doesn’t look like a starving and Photoshopped fashion model?
Or even more bizarre, that she should be sexy over smart, beautiful over bold?
Are you freaking kidding me?

Look at her. She is full of awesome.

You were, once. Maybe you still are. Maybe you are in the process of getting it back.

All I know is that if you aren’t waking up feeling like this about yourself, you are really missing out.

LOVE THIS!!!!! My son who is 7 has a tshirt that says hello my name is AWESOME.:goodvibes We should all have one of those:thumbsup2

not really feeling up to responding, I've had one hell of a day.

My schedule has just gotten compounded tenfold. DS11 is in the High school play, plus DS10 and DS11 started Cross Country today and I only had one hour notice that it started.
And it looks like I will be the asst coach because the old one bailed because of the coaches flakiness.
I'm going to need a vacation come November 1!!!

sorry for the crappy day  I hope tomorrow is better. You will have earned that vacation when the time comes.

This cold is wiping me out today. I almost fell asleep at DS9's drum lesson tonight!

You know your really not feeling well if you almost fall asleep during a drum lesson.:lmao: I hope you feel better soon but great job for getting in Spin Class even with feeling crummy.

Why is it that we start to question whether or not we can do something instead of just trying to do it. I am going to try to look at things being possible and jumping in the deep end when trying them.

Fear nothing but Fear itself........

I enjoyed a quiet night with my family. We dont get many of these and tomorrow we are back to running around like crazy. I have a pork tenderloin ready for the crockpot and we are going to eat that with a veggie for dinner tomorrow. That will be 2 nights in a row that I planned ahead for dinner. You guys are helping me already and you didnt even know it.;)

Off to bed to get my 8hrs of beauty sleep. Have a great evening.

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you? [/QUOTE]

I am constantly amazed at various calorie counts for meals.

I always break down the nutritional info of a new recipe before I actually make it. There are an awful lot of "healthy' recipes out there that are anything but healthy!

Speaking of nutritional info, I REALLY appreciate those restaurants that provide nutritional info on customized meals. Red Robin has a very nice interactive menu and I can play with adding and subtracting various ingredients to get the nutritional profile I need. Contrast that with The Cheesecake Factory, which resists giving even basic nutritional information.

QOTD Monday, September 10, 2012: Which of these motivational ideas can you use on Motivational Monday? Or do you have one of your own? Just make sure it comes from your laughing place!:lmao:

I'm going to have to go with If you don’t like it, don’t eat it. I made this mistake the last time I lost weight. Lots of frozen meals were eaten. Each portion was perfectly measured. But when I got sick of Smart Ones, I was done. I had no tools for preparing healthy, DELICIOUS meals for myself.

This time I haven't eaten ANYTHING that comes out of a cardboard box. That right there has eliminated 99% of my problems. That one rule sums up my entire diet strategy. Food has never tasted so good!

I had a GREAT day at the water park on Sunday! I had a very healthy breakfast and I stuck to my healthy picnic lunch. I didn't let the ice cream, funnel cakes, and fried goodies inside the park tempt me at all. However, on the way home, we stopped at my favorite Mexican restaurant... and it was all over. :crazy2:

I ate shrimp enchiladas covered in cheesy calorie-laden sauce, super nachos, chips and salsa, and a margarita... or two. And after all that I feel... happy!

Hey, it was just one meal. Every so often going out to eat with my friends and letting it all go is worth it. Not to mention the endless stairs at the water park yesterday had to have earned me SOME leeway. Today was back on track, and all went well. No ill effects from a few indiscretions yesterday, I was just as happy with my usual foods.

And I got in a nice six mile run tonight too. I felt great afterwards. I'm really starting to feel like I've got the hang of this running stuff.

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

Since I haven't been counting calories this time, nothing has really shocked me. BUT when I first did Weight Watchers years ago, I can't tell you how dismayed I was to learn the points value of my beloved large M&M McFlurry. I truly love those unholy hybrids of ice cream and milkshakes, and before I knew the truth I would eat them multiple times a week. Since... I've maybe had one a year! Oh how sad. I can't remember now exactly what the points are, but internet tells me they have about 900 calories. Not a whole day's worth of calories (not quite) but combined with the french fries I would sometimes order... just not good.

Welcome Kevin!!

Ugh its monday. Not having a good day. Dh and decided to sit down over the weekend and figure out if we are going on vacation in 3 days and guess what? We never sat down, so our trip is still up in the air. I hate being so undecided. I am thinking of just canceling it so I know whats happening, but then I think about not going and I want to go, so I dont want to cancel unless we have to! :rolleyes2 I cleared my schedule, so it is all up to dh, if he can move things around.

To make matters more fun though, this morning I came down with thrush! :crazy2: I feel like a newborn. I am on steroids for a mosquito attack (59 bites) I suffered a week ago and it seems those drugs caused this illness. I am waiting for my doc to tell me if I have to take another drug to get rid of the thrush. This is why I avoid taking meds. The side effects on me are killer. :(

I'm so sorry about all of this. How did you end up with so many mosquito bites?? Fingers crossed that you get better quickly and can enjoy a vacation!

Wow congrats to DD. How exciting for her. You are such a great mom for driving your kids around and supporting them in everything they choose to do. If they dont already now they will definitely appreciate what you do for them so much one day.

Awww.... thanks! I know they will appreciate it someday. And sometimes they actually appreciate it now! :rotfl:

In the spirit of refocusing on my healthy eating:
I tried a really good recipe yesterday. I have the pampered c. covered baking dish aka magic pot. I used chicken breast, green/red pepper, onion, and a bbq seasoning rub. Put it all in the pot, cooked it for 12 minutes in the microwave and then shredded up the chicken to be served on rolls or eaten without the carbs. It was delicious and healthy. I got the magic pot a month or so ago and it has been so helpful in trying to get some substantial healthy dinners in during the week when we are busy with football practice and other stuff.

Just wanted to share for anyone else who may have trouble getting out good meals during the week and/or weekend when things are insanely busy. You can also do other meats or even veggies and casseroles. I am not a consultant and I am not trying to market for this company but it has been an amazing kitchen tool that I have found to be so useful for healthy living.

Have a great rest of the day!!!!

That magic pot sounds really great! Maybe a good alternative to the days when I forget to load the crockpot in the morning or when the men are home alone. Why didn't I see this all those times I got invited to a PC party and didn't know what to order??

The world should be full of color - especially on your dinner plate!
I've always struggled with having a colorful plate - but I'm really going to make a conscious effort to try new vegetables and fruits at meals. The more I try, the better the chance I will find more healthy food choices that I like.

For years I thought I hated broccoli. I tried it as a kid and was not a fan - but after trying it again last year (for the first time in over 20 years), it turns out I really like it. Who knows if my tastes just changed or what? But hopefully I will discover some more vegetables and fruits that I can add to my favorites list.

Maybe when you had it before it wasn't cooked to your liking. I find that overcooked broccoli is :crazy2: For most of my family, we like it lightly steamed with still a bit of crunch to the stems, or roasted in the oven or on the grill. I also like it in a cold broccoli salad. And we mostly just like fresh, but will have frozen occasionally if necessary.

But tastes do change also. I am STILL finding that I am learning to like veggies that I didn't like as a kid. It has been a progress since my late teens. That is why I continue to try things even if I "think" that I don't like them. SO far the only veggies that I still don't care for are lima beans and turnip.... but even those I will eat if it is served.

SO keep trying! Try new recipes and new cooking techniques. You never know when you might hit upon a new "favorite" veggie!

PAMELA -- Good luck with the job application

Thanks.... I'm kind of excited about it and hope it pans out. It is a company I've been thinking about working with for years. I really hope they give me a chance.

Nothing much going on around here today. Alan's been dealing with a headache and hoping it will go away by morning. We got laundry finished up and folded. I got most of my bag packed except the last minute things I'll throw in before we leave. We got my one medication filled so I don't have to worry about that. The cameras are charged and ready to go.

We're staying at Baylake Tower in a studio lake view using our DVC. This will be the 1st time we've stayed in a studio there so it'll be interesting to see how small they are. We're bringing stuff for breakfast and lunch that we'll eat in the room. So it'll help cut down on food costs. I'm taking my pedometer and my refillable water bottle to use while I'm in the parks.

Now, I'm off to check the weather report!

Toodles! :tinker:

WOOHOO.... BLT, here you come! I hope Alan is feeling better soon. What kinds of foods do you bring for the room? I know I frequently travel with at least breakfast foods, but since we don't always have a fridge, I've had to develop some plans/ideas for healthy foods without refrigeration or cooking! IT has been tricky. I'd love to hear your ideas.

It has been a long day at work today... Don't really want to go into all the details but finally getting to go on your lunch break when you have an hour left of your shift is a hoot...

So needless to say, I'm in a FABULOUS mood right now... Not to mention the fact that since I got to go to lunch an hour before I'd be eating dinner, I ended up just eating pudding and a fruit cup on my break, making my total calories at this point about 600. (I try to eat about 1,600 per day) Not the best food day today... So I'm trying to figure out what I want for dinner. We have leftover fried fish but I really don't feel like picking it off the bone so I may do the baked chicken instead.

Shoulder and knee is really hurting today so I think I'll just chill out tonight.

Hope everyone had a great Monday!

Yikes.... sounds like a crazy day! Take care of that shoulder and knee. Maybe you were feeling "HANGRY" (so hungry you were actually angry). I know I can get like that.

Be our guest! Be our guest!

As our journey to the Happiest Place on Earth continues I take you to a place in Disney where none of us have been yet -- talk about Disney magic! ;)

And speaking of food, do you know what 300 calories looks like?

300 calories look drastically different when you're eating in instead of dining out. Choosing healthier, more nutritious foods--at home and away--means you can eat much more food and still lose weight.

Breakfast: 300-Calorie Meals & Portions
Here are three morning meals that each weigh in at 300 calories. Healthy and quick homemade meals pack whole grains, fresh fruit, and protein--a filling combination that will keep you fuller longer. You could only eat a fraction of the comparable restaurant meals (right column) for the same number of calories. Get more healthy breakfast ideas here.

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

OH MY GOSH! Were you in my car last night when I was talking to my Mom??? We had JUST THIS conversation! We were talking about how surprised most folks would be at the ingredients and calories in what they were eating on a daily basis. We were mostly thinking of the unhealthy ingredients, but we were also talking about calories.

For example..... on the old WW Points system, I am allowed a daily quota of 18 Points. A Dunkin Donuts reduced-fat blueberry muffin... sounds like a good choice right?? You got "fruit" and it is "reduced fat".... so it must be a good choice. How about 8 points!?? :faint: Yup... nearly HALF of my daily Points! So imagine how many points a REGULAR muffin must be??? And that is without any sort of drink. And let's face it... there is NOTHING healthy about this choice. White flour, white sugar (and probably lots of it to replace the reduced fat), artificial blueberry flavor (I'm guessing here).

Anyhow..... I have come across many many meals and snacks over the past few years that have been SHOCKING in their calorie/Points count and ingredients. I've learned the hard way to try to ALWAYS know the calories/Points in an item BEFORE eating it! Sometimes the most innocent sounding item (like a reduced fat muffin) can be a calorie landmine!

I have developed a small "cheat sheet" and idea card for meals that I can eat out (fast food, chain restaurants, etc). I'd be happy to try to find the original in my computer and share it for anyone who might be interested. I have it done in terms of Points, but I could certainly add calories if it would help.

I think that the most shocking thing that comes to mind was some sort of coffee toffee Frosty concotion from Wendy's (about 2 years ago). I think I had figured it (in my head) to probably be about 8 points. I really wanted to try it and wanted a treat that day, so decided to go ahead. Imagine my surprise when I got home and looked it up and discovered it was actually 13 Points! :furious:

And Buffy.... YOU are awesome my friend! :wave2:

YIKES! I can SO relate to the "coach flakiness" issues. DD's YMCA swim team has had a MAJOR shake-up this fall, due to some coaching issues over the summer. Sadly, we lost our two fastest female swimmers in DD's age group, plus our fastest male swimmer (also in DD's age group).... plus they were all good friends of DD. She is feeling really devastated that her last year with this group won't be the "special" time she wanted it to be and I am sad for her (plus I will definitely miss a few of the parents). I told her she needs to go ahead and make it the BEST it can be and she can't worry too much about the choices that others make. With just one year left, she (and I) didn't feel like she was in a position to change teams now. This team has definitely been like family to DD over the past 8 years, so it is a definite loss, but we are trying to make the best of it.

BTW.... maybe this coaching will get you out and moving when you might otherwise not?? Try to think of it that way!:thumbsup2

I would have to say the Nutrigrain waffles picture shocked me! We don't have waffles in our house since my middle son who struggles with weight loss use to eat waffles all the time ... and it helped to lead him to being overweight. I am going to have to check those out in the grocery store.

Don't be too fooled into thinking that they are a great choice. They are certainly better than your standard "white" waffle, but you could probably make better, healthier, lighter waffles yourself at home. And limit it to one waffle, plus a protein and fruit. Personally, I would never eat both 2 waffles AND yogurt. It would be one or the other (plus protein if I were eating the waffle or a bit of carb if I were eating the yogurt).... maybe one waffle and half of the yogurt??

I have to say ... when I use MFP, I am shocked at the caloric value of some foods. My lunch is usually grilled salmon and broccoli. It is so nutritious and so low in calories. Now, I just have to stop all the junk eating when I get home!

I am feeling good that I logged all my food today. I went over a little ... but I am taking steps to get back on the wagon. I was hoping to walk with a friend this evening, but I had to take my mom to a doctor's appt and the doctor was an hour behind. I didn't get home until 6:00. Thankfully my DH had dinner on. I had to cancel walking since I have school work to get done and I am putting if off ..... chit-chatting with all of you! :goodvibes

Hope you got your school work done! :) And let me guess... was the doctor an Orthopaedist?? They are the WORST at running late!

Thanks for sharing this Buffy. I live with magical awesomeness all day long and love it! I have one of my reluctant readers/writers making a Star Wars book with me (since he LOVES Star Wars) and you would think were were writing the next NY bestseller.

That is GREAT!

All of us are AWESOME on this thread .... and don't let anyone make you believe you are not! :goodvibes

Okay ... I do have to get my work done ....

Yes we are!

Sounds like you are definitely up against some major food challenges. Hopefully you can find some things that work for you without making you sick.

Not that I thought it was healthy but was just blown away by how much the calories actually were. I never counted calories much until a few months ago but it is definitely an eye opener.

Restaurant chains throw words like "natural" and "light" all over stuff to give it a "healthy halo." People see those words and they automatically start thinking that the foods are low calorie, etc. But even if the foods are actually HEALTHY, the portion sizes are crazy. Check out the NI for most restaurants and you will find that the portion you are buying is actually TWO servings (or more!). I think many folks who try to at least look at the NI are fooled by this often-overlooked fact.

LOVE THIS!!!!! My son who is 7 has a tshirt that says hello my name is AWESOME.:goodvibes We should all have one of those:thumbsup2

I'd love to have a t-shirt like that for my kids.

Don't you LOVE it when dinner is prepared? Do you love the "you" that thought ahead and took the time to get it in the crockpot? I love, love, love my crockpot! Just wish I could find more healthy meals for it. SO many crockpot recipes start with "cream of chemical" soup.

Off to bed to get my 8hrs of beauty sleep. Have a great evening.

Happy Sunny Tuesday friends! Chilly night here in the North Country! I woke up cold during the night, closed a few windows, put on some fuzzy socks and a hoodie and climbed back in bed! :thumbsup2 They were predicting some frost north of us. Time to bring in the house plants from their summer vacation on the porch!

Got up and moving quickly this morning, as I thought my Tuesday morning Bible Study started today.... and then checked the date and realized it starts next Tuesday! Oh well. At least I wasn't dressed yet....and I have an ironed outfit ready for next week! :rotfl:

Not sure what is on the agenda for today. Probably hang out a load of wash, since the sun has made an appearance. And maybe a third coat of paint on the front steps so I can call that job done. Perhaps even sanding the bulkhead and getting a coat of paint on that?? We'll see. Of course, nothing will get done if I don't stop sitting here drinking coffee!! :lmao:

Seriously, there are SO MANY chores that have been neglected around here for far too long.... it is hard to decide what to do first! I am trying to prioritize the ones that require decent weather to get done now, before it gets cold. SO obviously the painting should be done first. The attic and basement clean-outs can wait for colder temps.

I'm also trying to prioritize what actually NEEDS to be done versus what I would LIKE to be done. Our front step lights are in good shape, but they have faded a bit and I would like to take them down and spray them black.... but that is definitely a "want" versus a "need". Plus the decent spray paint would probably be $8/can and I would probably need 3-4 cans. Not sure I want to spend the $$ right now.

Anyhow, as usual, I am RAMBLING here!

Off to spend a few minutes on Pinterest looking up some healthy crockpot recipes. If I find anything good, I'll share it with you all!.................P

None of the calorie counts really shock me, but they do bum me out a bit! :lmao: That's why when I go out to dinner I almost always get whatever steamed vegtables they have as a side. That way, yeah maybe the entree isn't supper healthy but I'm saving some calories by eating my brocoli :). My daughter, who's 5 almost always chooses steamed broccoli now as a side instead of fries and usually eats it before her entree, and that makes me super happy and proud that I've been a good example. I still try to be mindful of what main dish I get, getting sauces on the side, grilled instead of fried and things like that, but since we only go out maybe once a week I want to get what I want!

So I signed up for my first 5k yesterday. It's October 27th and I'm a bit nervous but I have 6 weeks or so to prepare so hopefully it goes well. My goal is to walk as little as possible, so I have something to shoot for!

Have a great day everyone!

QOTD answer 9/10/12:
Don't walk when you can run. (sorry it's so long!)

I ran a 5k 9.5 years ago. I had just lost 60+ lbs, was (ahem) 9.5 years younger, and was doing it (at FIRST) to keep up with the guy I was dating. He didn't go to my 5k and the actual race itself was somewhat of a disappointment for myself because I made it this HUGE thing that it didn't need to be. I was upset with my time, I started out too fast, and was weak to finish. I felt like a failure and never did one again because I subscribed to the "I can't" mentality. I mean..hadn't I proved it?

Since that 5k, I had gained all 60 lbs back, though I've lost 28.8 at WW since this past May. Then I got this crazy idea in my head that I not only wanted to run again.. but after a Disney trip in June-- I wanted to do one of those half marathons. So I started to try to run/ walk.

And then Sunday... 9.5 years since my failure of a 5k... I ran another one. A real 5k-- with LOTS of people around, cheerleaders, and marching bands. I'm not one who likes to exercise in front of others, but I did it and it was awesome.

My time was actually worse since I'm older now but it was incredibly motivating to see that I could still run (I've been training for the past month). I mean, I wasn't a runner as a kid- I was usually second to last (or last) for the mile run in gym class.

But Sunday's 5k? It was FUN because I didn't make it a HUGE thing and because some of the other WW members were there. I be-bopped along to the music I love on my iPOD. I watched my pace on the uphills so I could finish strong- I actually sprinted to the finish line as opposed to feeling like I was c.r.a.w.l.i.n.g to the finish like that first race all those years ago.
Finishing that race on Sunday, makes me want to do a race every week. I'm not at my goal weight- but to feel strong--on my own--was SUCH an incredible feeling.

If you are still reading this and thinking that you can't-- you probably won't. But if there is even one little smidge of "I might" in you. Try. You don't have to be the best. You most likely won't be the worst. And even if you are, you are doing more than the ones who won't try at all. I placed 181/225. NOT the best. But I finished strong :)

So I'm here in Aneheim!! Did Disneyland and Cali Adventure all day yesterday. Carsland was amazing but made me miss my kids even more. Heading to Downtown Disney for a little shopping this morning then am booked into the evening :( Figured we walked about 8 miles yesterday but am sure I managed to eat those burned calories anyone..... Going to really work on only eating when hungry the rest of the week to hopefully drop a lb or 2!!

May not be on much this week but wanted to check in. Have a great week gang! Stay on track/plan and believe in yourself!!!!!!

Which brings me to the QOTD for Sunday, September 9, 2012: Do you have all the winning strategies covered? Or do you have one of your own that should be added to the list?

BRB with replies and my own answer. :car:

HEY I road that yesterday!!!! twice

I know what I need to do....it is the motivation and commitment that I often lack :(.

Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test
Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie
And we'll provide the rest . . .

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

Lisah - LOVE the graphics and the lyrics and everything you put before the question of the day!! I can't wait every day to see what is coming next !!

I do WW, I get 29 daily point, 49 weekly allowance points (and activity points if you move!), and went to IHOP with my family over the weekend.. lots of stuff over 1000 cal ! I did good however I had an egg subsitute omelet with swiss, onion and diced ham (ate 2/3 of it) 2 slice wheat with only 1 jelly packet, a fruit cup, 3 bites of hashbrown and 3 bites of pancake with butter pecan syrup.. total cost - 14 points
My norm at IHOP is the country omelet (30points)w 3 pancakes (18 points)total cost = 48 point if you eat it all , I don't but eat 2/3 so I was eating at least 30+ points in this one meal OOOOOMMMMMGGGGGG... shocker!!! Mom mom ate this meal -oh and this doesn't count syrup or the sour cream they bring you ..

Buffy I LOVED yesterday's qoute - as the mom of an overweight teen girl who has struggled all her life I can't imagaine telling her she is less then AWESOME everyday because of who she is !!! I am printing this off and sending it to her in the mail at college because I want her to know I think she is Awesome !!!! (hope today is better for you too!)

Hope everyone has a great day (I've said a little prayer at my desk for the victims of 9/11, a day I'll never forget :( )

Hi, I have just signed up. I was doing ok, slow but steady, and then we went on vacation for two weeks so now I am up again

It happens! I know you can kick that vacation weight to the curb now that you are back and on track.

Rediscovering interesting foods and learning new ways to cook them are part of this exciting journey we are on! :thumbsup2

It’s important to use your imagination.
Anything is possible. No fear, no self-doubts, no negative self talk, no self-criticism, no worries, no destructive anxieties or thoughts of failure.

Today I really needed to remember both of these!

Yes, we would never speak to friends the way we speak to ourselves. :flower3:

Hi, Lisa! Good to "see" you again. :) That's so great to hear! I'd love to catch up with you at the races. Really looking forward to Wine & Dine!!

Me, too! :yay: It is going to be so fun running through 3 parks! :yay:

Ashley, hope your shoulder and knee are feeling better today. :flower3:

Which leads me to the QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

I am surprised still at times how many calories are in things I think should not be so bad. I also think it's terrible how a high calorie meal leaves you feeling hungry a bit later when some of the lower calorie meals stick with you longer. It's crazy! Just another reminder to be more mindful of what you eat. ::yes::

Buffy, you are full of awesome every day! :flower3: Kudos to you for stepping up to be assistant coach -- can you recruit someone else to help you in case the coach flakes?

Anything is possible. I would not have believed that 6 months ago. Now that I am over half way to my goal, I KNOW it's true!
You have your whole life ahead of you. Yes, and I want it to be a healthy life with a fit body!

QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

What I always find shocking is restaurant salads. We may think we're making a healthier choice, but oftentimes we'd be better off with a burger & fries! It's CRAZY!

That is crazy! ::yes:: You're on the downhill slide to your goals! :woohoo:

BernardandMissBianca, I love today's quote! It's so true too! We need to remember how awesome we all really are! :goodvibes

Some of my biggest surprises were how MANY calories were in the fast food that I used to eat several times a week. For example:

McDonalds (Quarter Pounder w/cheese meal and Medium coke) : 1100 calories

Raisin' Cane's (Three Finger Meal with extra toast and sauce) : 1167 calories

Subway (Big Philly Cheesesteak with 2 chocolate chip cookies): 1170 calories

And sometimes I'd eat 2 of these items in a day! :worried:

Thankfully I don't eat like that anymore. :thumbsup2

But you were smart, Ashley, and learned this while you were still younger -- you will save yourself years of regrets. :flower3:

I have to say ... when I use MFP, I am shocked at the caloric value of some foods. My lunch is usually grilled salmon and broccoli. It is so nutritious and so low in calories. Now, I just have to stop all the junk eating when I get home!

Your salmon sounds yummy, Fran. :goodvibes Do you grill it and just have it cold or reheat it? DH will not eat fish but I need to look into cooking it more for myself.

Jill, glad you are feeling better! :flower3: Way to get that first cold of the school year out of the way before your 5K.

Be back later with the rest of the replies.

What a great story and very inspirational. I had the same idea to do the disney half and told myself I could do it even when everyone else said I couldnt. I did it and have never stopped to look back since. Congrats on your 5K and Im so glad it was fun for you this time. Good luck on your goal of doing a half. Do you have a specific one in mind that your shooting for?

Hi Jen! Glad your able to see and do some fun things. Have a great rest of your trip.

Luckily the M&M pile has dwindled here at work because it was getting harder and harder to walk by as I would be reminded they were there as my colleauges frequently were taking handfuls. I had a few too many of them at the end of last week and yesterday. Now I think I have all my hurddles set aside to come up with a good loss this week.:thumbsup2

Today is just beautiful outside. Sunny and high 70's with a nice breezy.:goodvibes I love early fall :)

oh and does anyone watch that gordon ramsey master chef show. I played softball on a summer league team for 2 years with the girl who won last night. She was always a cool person so I am so happy for her. She is getting an awesome opportunity.

Ok need to get back to work. No lunch break for me today. I will eat my salad as Im working.:guilty:

Good luck on your goal of doing a half. Do you have a specific one in mind that your shooting for?

Thanks! I am signing up ($ permitting) to do the Princess 1/2 in Feb :)
That's awesome that you did one despite people saying you couldn't. I think my husband knows I'm going to do it (he always has more confidence in me than I have in myself!), but my mom and other family members seem to be doubtful. I need to make this happen to show them AND (more importantly)myself that I CAN do it :)
Which one did you do?

Hi Everyone already it's been too long since I posted but I am reading when I can (my computer has totally given up on me:scared1: and I'm using my daughter's when I can)). I have been tracking religiously since joining WW and it's definitely an eye-opener! Pamela I'd love to hear more about your shortcuts:goodvibes

I'll get looking for it. Sadly, I don't have the Points + for it.... just the old Points. But I think I did include calories for some. Not sure how much help it will give you over on the beautiful green island of Ireland though. Do you have the same fast food over there??

*****************

Good afternoon friends! Got lots of stuff done this morning.... laundry (as usual), plus I got the basement bulk-head sanded and rinsed and ready for paint. I need to wait to paint for another day though, since I don't have any mineral spirits or turpentine on hand and it is oil-based paint... and I'm a sloppy painter! I did do a third (and hopefully final) coat of paint on the front steps. They look great! Now I'm debating about painting the mudroom porch and steps too. :rolleyes It would be nice for them to match the front. And of course, now I'm noticing that the front door and mudroom door could both use a sanding and painting as well :rolleyes1.... it never ends!!

I dragged some brush to the burn pile too. I was going to rake, but it is getting really warm! I think I'll wait until after dinner when it cools down a bit. With DD driving herself to swim now, I have several hours in the evening to get stuff done! I haven't had that evening time for YEARS! :thumbsup2

Lunch was leftovers, but yummy. Grocery bill is STILL out of control and I am trying to be DONE buying most groceries for this month, so I didn't have a salad, as there is just a bit left and I'm going to save it for now. I cut up a bowl of tomatoes though and enjoyed with a bit of light blue cheese yogurt dressing. I also had the remaining fried rice from the other night, plus I added some extra bok choy and other veggies I had on hand to bulk it up.

Dinner is Tuna Cheddar Chowder. You can check out the recipe on the BL recipe thread! It sounds strange, but it is delish!

Speaking of recipes.... up next is this week's healthy recipe! It is PERFECT for this time of year as the gardens are full of tomatoes and zucchini! ..................P

(Don't let the long list of ingredients scare you away! This is super easy!)

Layered Ratatouille

1 medium summer squash – cubed

1 medium zucchini – cubed

1 ½ tsp. salt – divided

3 large cloves of garlic, mashed or minced – divided

1/3 C olive oil (I use less)

1 medium eggplant- cut into ½ inch cubes

½ tsp. dried oregano

3 medium onions – thinly sliced

2 medium green peppers – thinly sliced

½ tsp. dried marjoram

4 medium ripe tomatoes – peeled and thinly sliced

¼ tsp. dill seeds

Lightly oil 2 ½ qt. casserole and distribute summer squash and zucchini over the bottom. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the salt, garlic, and olive oil.

Make another layer with eggplant and then repeat sprinkling of 1/3 of the salt, garlic, and olive oil, this time adding oregano.

Make a third layer of onion and a fourth layer of green pepper. Sprinkle with remaining salt, garlic, and oil, this time adding marjoram.

Cover and bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Add final layer of tomatoes and sprinkle with dill, continue baking uncovered for 10 minutes. Serve hot, cold, or room temperature.

** My changes....

I use Pam spray to grease the bottom of the casserole and then just the tiniest sprinkling or spray of EVOO on each layer. I probably use just a few tablespoons of oil for the entire dish, rather than a 1/3 of a cup. If you aren't concerned about fat or are okay using this healthy fat, then feel free to make as originally stated! I also use just a bit of dill instead of dill seed on the top layer, as I rarely have dill seed in the house and don't want to buy it for just one recipe. Plus I am not overly fond of a strong dill taste. I also do NOT peel my tomatoes.... too much work! But I do lightly peel my eggplant to lose some of the texture and bitterness of the peeling and to remove any wax if the eggplant has been bought at a regular grocery store rather than the farmer's market or homegrown.

Hope this helps someone! Wish I had more fresh produce in my garden right now. It wasn't producing well, so we tore it up. My folks might come up for a visit this weekend and I'm going to ask them to bring some fresh stuff from their garden........................P

Hi, everyone! I just joined this challenge today. I have a bad habit of giving up on weight-loss attempts within the first 8 weeks or so, usually resulting in a gain of more weight than I started with. Hopefully this will give me more accountability!

just remember everyone doesn't always wash their hands after using the bathroom! That always kept me out of community snacks!

Eeeew...good point, though! That will definitely be in the back of my mind next time I see snacks set out like that.

QOTD for Tuesday, September 11, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

The thing that I always remember as shocking me the most about the caloric density of a particular food was when I learned that those bloomin onion-type appetizers are roughly 2000 calories!!! I never knew until then just how ridiculous deep-frying is when it comes to adding on the calories. I mean it's a vegetable, with a little breading, right? Yeah, not so much!

Lisah thanks for such an eye opening and interesting article.

What really surprised me was the starbucks muffin. I eat a muffin almost every day for breakfast, but I realized that is going to have to stop since they are alot of calories and really have no nutritional value.

Yes, the muffins are a sad thing. I think it was Pamela who once called them caloric bombs! :rotfl:

Jessi, you have a lot of challenges with your food. :flower3: Maybe a nutritionist could help you.

Lindsay, glad you had a relaxing evening last night! :hippie:

Speaking of nutritional info, I REALLY appreciate those restaurants that provide nutritional info on customized meals. Red Robin has a very nice interactive menu and I can play with adding and subtracting various ingredients to get the nutritional profile I need. Contrast that with The Cheesecake Factory, which resists giving even basic nutritional information.

That's never a good sign when you can't find the info. :confused3

Elle, great job on the 6 mile run! :thumbsup2

OH MY GOSH! Were you in my car last night when I was talking to my Mom??? We had JUST THIS conversation! We were talking about how surprised most folks would be at the ingredients and calories in what they were eating on a daily basis. We were mostly thinking of the unhealthy ingredients, but we were also talking about calories.

:lmao: Yes, you take me everywhere since I live in your iPad. ;)

None of the calorie counts really shock me, but they do bum me out a bit! :lmao:

So true! ::yes:: Me, too.

Christina, a big :woohoo: for your 5K and enjoying it! Sometimes we forget this is supposed to be fun.

Jen, so glad that you are having a great time in Anaheim! pixiedust: I hope you get to see World of Color while you are there.

Lisah - LOVE the graphics and the lyrics and everything you put before the question of the day!! I can't wait every day to see what is coming next !!

Thanks! :flower3: I always have a great time coaching.

Hi - I'm Kevin and this will be my first challenge.

This seems like a very nice and encouraging group, so I'm really looking forward to getting started. With a trip to WDW looming in January and quite a bit of weight to lose (more than can be lost in one challenge), I can use all the help and motivation I can get.

Accountability and perseverance have been my biggest shortcomings in weight loss, so hopefully I can improve in those areas.

Every long journey must begin with a single step ... and I very much hope joining the Fall Challenge is my first step to weight loss success.

Whoohoo! Another guy in the challenge! :welcome:
