Um, I'm just curious.. are perogies really rare in the States? I have never thought of them as being more common in Canada, but they are pretty much a staple everywhere I have been here. Mostly Western Canada though... maybe that's it. And in case you were wondering (which you probably weren't), there are different types of perogies for every country in that European region... Polish and Welsh and German and all that, though Polish generally are most commonly associated with perogies. The best way (and probably least healthy) is fried with oil and then topped with sour cream and bacon bits. DBF has found a way to make them even less healthy than that... perogy poutine. I kid you not. Perogies layered with shredded cheddar cheese and gravy. Not that this is a HEALTHY ethnic food, but I am just throwing it out there (and it sure is tasty).
ICK to the poutine. I had never heard of it before a few years ago. A local French Canadian woman opened a diner and we went in a few times. Couldn't figure out the french fries with poutine thing until we asked. Like I said... ICK. Definitely not my thing. And it would be a way to ruin a perfectly good pierogie. I agree the pierogies are GREAT with sour cream... but sadly that is a menu item that is no long on my radar.
Morning all. I feel horrible! Bloated, indigestive, sore from riding, tired from not enough sleep. BUT---- DD IS THE STATE BEAM CHAMP FOR HER AGE AND LEVEL!!!!!!!She was 2nd on all other events, and second all around. I am sooooo happy for her. She had a GREAT meet, highest scores ever for her on floor and bars!
It's tough, b/c our little gym works out about half of what the girls she competed against at state. They are 4-5 hours a days, 6 days a week girls. We only go 3 hours 3 times a week.
Sorry for my proud mom braggging!
After the meet was finally over, 2 HOURS LATER THAN SCHEDULED, DH decides he wants to drive 30 minutes in the OPPOSITE direction from home so he can eat at his favorite seafood buffet. I really didn't think I ate that much, I just wasn't feeling well and DD2 was DONE after being at the meet for 5 hours and wasn't on her best behavior. I didn't eat any fried foods, just a 1 inch square each of mahi mahi and flounder, salad, and a taste of a couple of other things. I did have a small piece of baklava and flan, maybe that's it. THE SCALE WENT UP 4 pounds since Saturday morning. I really don't get it. I do feel rather bloated, and I know I didn't have enough water, but I didn't feel like I ate 4 pounds worth of food in 2 meals.
Yesterday's QOTD: I love fresh salsa with lots of cilantro, hummus, most anything Mexican, but not much of it is healthy!, and Chinese makes me feel bad. I think it's the sodium. I do like steamed dumplings.
Hopefully I can come back this evening and not be so grumpy! Apologizing again for the rant.... Happy Monday!
Taryn
WOOHOO!! to your DD. We definitely have some talented kiddos here! Couldn't be anything to do with their great parents, could it??

MMMM... salsa!
Great question on the ethnic foods. I don't get chinese very often, but when I do, I would say I don't get anything healthy. The healthiest ethnic food I would eat would be fajitas, done without cheese or sour cream, with whole wheat tortillas. Salsa is a favorite food of mine. I throw it in egg beaters many mornings, in salad to spice it up, on top of chicken and pasta. Lot's of good ideas here. I worked with a few polish girls and they always talked about their pierogies, and gawumkies and always brought them in around the holidays. We used to joke on the gawumkies which is stuffed cabbage because my mom was swedish and made them too, and called them cauldomers. I know the spelling is horrible.
Michael missed the bus this morning, so I'll drive him in a bit. I grilled a bunch of food last night, so I"m all set for healthy food through tomorrow. I did pick up a piece of carrot cake at the grocery store and at that last night, but at least I didn't buy the whole cake. They have alden merrel slices at market basket, and some days i just can't walk by. But I tracked it, and still have flex points left. Week days are definitely easier for me to stay on track. 4 days left of this challenge!!
Have a great day everyone.![]()
I had forgotten about galumpkies (what we call them). My Mom used to make them but I have had them in a few years. DH is not picky AT ALL, but one food he flat out refuses to touch is cabbage. I like it, but I have to eat it out or at my Mom's if I want it.
I love the idea of salsa in the eggs. I usually put chopped tomato in my egg whites, but salsa would be much easier! Gonna try it soon.
Good morning all!
Is this the salad that you tried, pjlla? http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=23907835&postcount=1797
You may not have to start from scratch -- there are a lot of Disney recipes online.
I don't know that I would say that pierogies are rare here, just that you don't come across them all that often. The frozen ones that everyone is talking about on the thread seem to be readily available. But I'm not that far from you and I don't see them that often except in the frozen food aisle.
Have a great day all!
Nope, that isn't the couscous I had.... but thanks for looking. I will have to check around myself.
Good morning all. Sorry I have been so delinquent in my posts the past month and a half. I have been so sparatic in my exercise that yes, I did gain...big surprise surprise. A big..9 pounds in 1 1/2 months. It was very hard walking the same routes I did with my dog. It made me sad, and I would cry. So, I let my sorrow get the better of me, and I slid and slid.....until 2 weeks ago, my back started to spazum..the disks that are out were really getting to me, my leg was getting progressively number and I was getting a constant pain all the way from my back right to the top of my left foot. I decided it had been long enough, life must go on. I started walking 8 miles a day, and lost 7 of the 9 I gained. I have my yearly doc appt. on the 28th and have set my sites on being under 130 for that appointment. I am confident that I can reach that goal. I plan to walk 8 miles a day each 5 days a week. Time to get back on that horse!

They sound stylish to me!Woo hoo! I am wearing pants that I havent been able to wear since 2003!!!I really dont think they are stylish anymore (capri length, black with light blue toile print) but I DONT CARE! Cause THEY FIT!!!
Have a great week everyone!
Hi everyone! Sorry I have been so delinquent around here just recently - the kids' school closing abruptly, subsequent start at a new school with a shorter day and longer drive sent me more off-balance than I expected. It really has changed the terrain of my day a surprisingly lot. Follow that up with a quick trip to New England for DH's high school reunion over Mother's Day weekend and man, things have been off for a while now.
So here's what happened: I might have slipped a bit in the food department. OK, I did. I slipped in the food department a bit and had a hard time with hitting a training plan like I wanted to because the weekends were crazily full with that musical I was working on, etc. etc. etc. And I noticed my clothes were starting to feel just a bit more snug. And feeling complacent about food and being at the top of my maintenance range is NOT where I want to be at the start of this summer, which is going to be FULL of opportunities to eat freely, badly and with menu options not entirely within my control. I want my head to be in the right place going into the summer and I want my weight to be at the lower end of the maintenance range. Because it is all too easy to gain a few pounds under the circumstances and then I'd be OUT of that range if I am at the top of it to start.
So as of Saturday, I set my points back to the "losing" level - I make better choices when I don't have as many points to "play" with. I do still consider myself to be maintaining, so no need to switch teams or anything, I think - this is just the "catching myself before it goes to far" part of maintenance.
In addition to that, does anyone remember this crazy plan I had to do back to back half marathons the first weekend in June? Well, the one on the 5th got cancelled due to construction and flooding on the course, which is probably for the best. I barely feel like I'm on track for a single half marathon, let alone a double.
I'm sorry to make it all about ME this morning - there's a bunch of stuff I'm putting off even now, but I hope to catch up with everyone later on today or tomorrow!![]()
You sound like you are right on track by not letting your weight get out of the maintenance zone... you are right about catching yourself before it goes too far... that is what maintenance is all about! Glad that the half marathon schedule is working out in your favor. Thanks for coming back and talking with us! We missed you. Hope the kids are doing well in their new school.
Happy Monday everyone! I've got about two minutes here to post the QOTD and then I need to fly!
Monday's QOTD: How do you imagine your life will change once your reach your goal weight (or get nearer to it anyhow)? Will you be more confident? More outgoing? More athletic? More energetic? Or still just the same old you, but thinner?
Since I am really close to goal I can talk about how my life has changed. First of all I am DEFINITELY more confident... I can talk to strangers and meet new people without having an anxiety attack about what they will think of me. Along with that confidence I am a BIT more outgoing (but I've always been shy and that hasn't changed). I am more energetic so I am able to do a lot more with my day!
I am VERY interested in exercise and healthy eating... much more so than ever before. I read about it and think about it A LOT! I am constantly thinking about how I can tweak my food to eat healthier and more food without adding more calories.
Other than that I am still the same old me!.................P
