Biggest Loser 8 Fall Challenge -- for losers and maintainers!

Another good Alan Rickman movie is Love Actually. It has Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Kiera Knightly and a lot of other folks in it. It is more of a Christmas type movie but it is good!

--And Bill Nighy! Yeah husband actually got that for me for Christmas last year I think. I had a burned copy but it left off the subtitles in the restaurant with Colin Firth--bad, bad. Have to wait till Dec. at least for that though lol. I bought myself a gorgeous ruby necklace that was 75% off at Target about a month ago because of this movie--it's a heart. Well I thought of it anyway when I bought it...a little guiltily. I'd really been wanting a necklace with red in it though for awhile....I had just better lose a pound this week I will be so upset if I don't. Wow-- guess I know my motivation.

I didn't see the report you mentioned but I did read a good book called "The End of Overeating" by David A Kessler, MD that talks about our addiction to food because of the fat, salt and sugar intentionally added to restaurant and processed foods. It was a real eye-opener.

That's an interesting subject that has been touched on in a few books I've read lately, particularly "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food", both by Michael Pollan. The idea is basically that human appetite for much of history was a fixed thing; we are programmed to consume a certain amount of calories. Modern business, not being content with competing over shares of a relatively fixed market, has turned its attention to ways to overcome that fixed appetite via food additives and other engineered products that don't trigger the "full" impulse or create food that tastes so good that people will habitually ignore those signals.

um ok so I will ask again is anyone else having problems with motivation cause I am big time I need support and also I am going through stuff and that aint helping so I just want to know if anyone else is having lack of motivation cause I am big time well hope everyone is doing well!

Yeah. I'm doing great with the water, but I am sort of resenting eating less and I've been very grudgingly doing the exercise bike- I'm really not going all out. And I've been really craving real food. like-- I'm hungry right now but I don't want the peach I thought I should eat. And it's not like I've been denying myself at all really. I'm actually saving my calories for dinner tonight, I have a stew in the crockpot. I hope its good!

I was wondering if what you thought was your motivation isn't really your motivation? :confused3 Also, do you think that it would help you to really break down the steps to your goal to really small baby steps and take things slowly. I've been really working on things since the first of the year. It's taken me awhile to figure out what works for me and what doesn't. Yet, I am down for the year and that is the first year that's happened in oh, about 20 years or so.

I am sorry I thought I answered this morning but I had one of those typed a big post, and it poofed, and missed replying to you. You can do it, I know you can! Here is some pixie dust to help you find your motivation! pixiedust:

Stitch1986 - yes I'm having trouble too. Reading the boards has helped a little but I haven't lost any weight since last week, in spite of being fairly active. I'm eating better than I did the rest of the summer, not drinking beer, not having fast food.
All we can do is try, and keep trying even after set-backs. Everytime I go into the kitchen to get something to eat I ask myself "what would be the best choice here"? then, if I can walk away I do.
I try to drink my 8 glasses of water, that helps some.
Here's a quote that helps me:
I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it Pablo Picasso

One of my ALL time favorite movies! I can watch it over and over again! It's just got so many beautiful messages of love! I thought of Liam Neeson in the movie when his wife died! The scene with Kiera Knightly and her "husband's" best friend is just so beautiful at the end of the movie with the cards and the song. Now I'm going to want to watch it again! I love the soundtrack and listen to it all the time!

"How old were you on your first trip to Disneyland or DisneyWorld? And what's one (or more) of your favourite Disney memories (either at a park, cruise ship, or even just watching Disney)?"

I was 3 years old...and have vague memories and some cute pics of me and Mickey!

The funniest memory is when we took our kids (I think it was the 2003 trip) and the almost-three year old ran right up to Micky and yelled "Pooh!" - we thought it was a riot but we did get a LOT of strange looks!!

The best memory is from the 2005 trip with a group of 13 of us. Dinner at 'Ohana - Superb and a great time!

:/ thxs yea I was surprised I did my wii fit yesterday for 45 min and I so thought I was gonna die I am ssoo out of shape it isnt even funny :( yea my water intake isnt going just yet lol I am though however started this morning keeping a journal with what I am doing, but idk I am guess I just need to do like lisah0711 said baby steps I guess drinking more money is a start I guess??

Hi there - You are not alone. I'm having trouble getting it all together after my trip to Vegas over Labor Day. And then I was also gone for 18 nights a few days prior to that to Disney. I think all that eating out has made it hard for my body to want to jump back in.

I'm not giving up though. I've got to do this for me. I didn't succeed again last night, but today I'm back at it. I've got the day stuff down pat I just need to reign in my evenings. It doesn't help that DH is working nights, although last year at this time he was in Afghanistan so it isn't that bad.

I think this time of year is always tough for me. The kids are back in school, CCD is going back in session, the kids extra curricular activities are back like cheerleading, guitar, etc. There seems to be too many back to school nights and meetings at each of the schools and it just feels overwhelming when you work all day and come home and don't get to sit down and relax. Some nights I'm not getting home till 9-10pm. Luckily I know it will slow down soon. At least I hope so. So for tonight I get to run home and take DD17 to cheer for the High School football game tonight (guess I should be glad its not tomorrow night) Run DS11 to guitar, then both of us go to the football game to watch unless its raining and then home after that - probably after 9pm.

I can't wait till DH is done with night shift!!

Well, today's qotd.. my first trip to Disney was my honeymoon! I was 21 and I'm pretty sure it was shortly after Epcot opened - 1982.

But, my best memory is the 1st trip with DD who was 5. First character we ran into was the Queen of Hearts and DD asked 'her' very loudly...."Why are you wearing boys shoes? And just WHY are your wrists so HAIRY??" I was SO embarassed and the 'queen' quickly made an exit after that for awhile.

I spent the morning at the allergist. I really liked her - which is a plus! Unfortunately, I am allergic to NOTHING!! Tested for lots including some foods. And did Asthma spirometry testing and my lung function/capacity are about 50% HIGHER than they would expect for someone of my age/height.

Unfortunately, that means that these are likely the chronic idiopathic hives. Had blood drawn for CBC, sed test, thyroid, autoimmune, etc. Should know Mon or Tues, but she doesn't expect anything out of whack. Should know about the biopsy late next week, too.

Said I should take either Zyrtec or Xyzal 2x a day and also 150mg Zantac 2x day until hives have been totally gone for 1 month. But, my hives have been MUCH less since I went off the zyrtec and even less after the benadryl, so she thinks they are going away on their own & advised me to wait a couple of days & see if I'm not too afraid of a breakout if they get worse. I think I'll play the wait & see game as I'm not fond of drugs.

Frustrating, but even she was stunned that my PCP had not drawn blood when they hives lasted more than 2 weeks. At least she is eliminating things, I truly didn't expect them to be able to pinpoint a cause. My theory - God knows I have them & what they're from & when they will go away. I can just deal with them. (but I'd rather not have to!!)

I really hope that the hives are waning cuz the Zyrtec really makes me gain weight. UGH!!!

Off to read more & find yesterday's Qotd! Keep moving everyone. We CAN do this!!

found it!!

Wednesday's Qotd - non-food de-stress....walk DS20s Husky, read a book in the bathtub, read my bible, visit DIS, shop, ....but food is ALWAYS my first instinct - trying really hard to break that one!!

I love the Mickey clippie, too!!

Julie,
I keep meaning to write you a little something about the bodybugg but things move so fast and my memory is dubious. I am so glad your hives are going away on their own. I'm not sure if it's good or bad that your testing turned up nothing.

I don't know if it was the armband that started things off for you, for sure, but I have a gowear fit (pretty much the same thing, different marketing) and find the little sensor thingy to be very irritating. I'm not sure if it's the lowgrade current or something in the metal, but it was giving me blisters, so I kind of gave up on it. :sad2: It was interesting to see the numbers but not worth it for the kind of irritation I was getting.

Hope you continue to feel better!

HI everyone. Thanks for all the kind words about the doctor's visits. AS bad as yesterday was today was a breeze. Half an hour from start to finish and we even had a chance to talk about somethings. I didn't even get a chance to read a magazine before they called me. I only spent a few minutes with the nurse. I was sitting making some notes about something and the doctor came in. All I was really in for was a PAP but I had to get some scripts and I also had to get the name of a surgeon for my dh (yes he goes to a female doctor) We also talked about flu shots and what to do if we get sick.

PS cholestrol is fine Trigl a little high but can easily be brought down. Weight is the same as when I went in for my pre op testing. I am pretty happy about that.

ohmom My dh loved KTTK tour. He did it last summer with my bil. We were thinking of doing last month but we didn't know how my foot would hold up.

I have a set of orthotic but they are 5 years old and really need to be replaced. They are the only thing that has gotten me through some days in the past 5 years.

Here goes the last QOTD for my coaching week:

Its time for another fun question. How old were you on your first trip to Disneyland or DisneyWorld? And what's one (or more) of your favourite Disney memories (either at a park, cruise ship, or even just watching Disney)?

I always think I went to DL before I actually did. I remember watching the POC on WOnderful World of Disney. When I finally saw it in person it was like I had seen it before. The same with Haunted Mansion.

But the first time I went to DL was on my honeymoon in 1978. I can't even think of all the great times dh and the boys and I have had over the past 31 years.

I do remember going to DW and riding the monorail to see Epcot before it was open.

Have a nice evening. The COW is coming up soon.

COW 2

THis week's COW starts on tomorrow 9/20/09 and will run until midnight Thursday 9/26/09. It will be an easy COW since we are all just getting started. I am starting easy but will be adding and/or subtracting as we go through the challenge. I will try to keep some on for 4 weeks since if you follow something for 30 days it will become a habit.

This week I added one extra thing to do. Keep doing the first two and add the third. The third one I added is important. Right now everyone is working out and eating right. I think we can add something that you may not even think of doing. Research has shown that bad gums could be an indication of heart disease. YOu can cut the risk by flossing. I also did this for me. I never remember but if is on my COW list I may remember.

YOu get 1 point for each day you follow the COW

This week will stay easy

Drink 8 glasses of water (1 point for each day)
Spend 5 minutes a day doing something special for yourself. Sit and read, do some needlework, take a bubble bath. Just something for yourself (1 point for each day)
Floss at least once a day

On Friday 9/27/09 send me

XX days drinking water
XX days doing something for yourself
XX days flossing

Thanks and enjoy the COW

DOn't forget to send me your COW1 points tomorrow so I can post results on Tuesday

I was three I think our first trip to Disneyland. I think my favorite memory is going for the frist time with my kids. My oldest was 5 at the time. Indiana Jones had just opened and she really wanted to go on it with her older (boy) cousins. She would get mesaured at least once a day to see if she was tall enough.

I love that show! I've only been able to catch a few episodes of it...but I think Gillian is great. This is from the website:

Top Ten Tips

1. Avoid sugar - found in cakes, biscuits, confectionary, chocolate, candy, desserts, soft drinks and many other foods.

2. Use whole grains rather than refined carbohydrates - white bread, white flour, white pastry, white pasta and white rice should be replaced with brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats, barley, rye, buckwheat and red rice.

3. Avoid artificial additives - these may be sweeteners, preservatives, colorings or flavorings.

4. Avoid stimulants - caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and other recreational drugs.

5. Eat vegetables or salads with lunch and dinner - Variety is important, so experiment with those that you don't normally eat.

6. Include some sources of essential fats every day - these include oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herrings and trout), pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, linseeds/flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts and avocadoes. Avoid processed fats such as low fat spreads and margarines.

7. Have at least 2 vegetarian days each week - good vegetarian proteins include chickpeas, lentils, mung beans, borlotti beans, butter beans, aduki beans, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, amaranth, nuts and seeds.

8. Avoid processed meats - ham, salami, chorizo, hot dogs, bacon and any smoked or cured meats. These all contain nitrates that have been linked to stomach cancer and are high in saturated fats and salt which are linked to cardiovascular disease.

9. Cook from scratch wherever possible - this means buying whole, natural ingredients and cooking or preparing them yourself. Avoid processed and packaged foods as much as possible.

10. Buy locally grown, organically produced, seasonal produce where possible - check out farmer's markets, farm shops and pick-your-own farms for the freshest produce.

Good info. # 8 is my weakness mostly salami & they should add pepperoni. For #7 after the first two I'm lost

All right, friends, I've created a Couch to 5K thread for our challenge. If you're interested, please stop by! We can talk about the training program, share successes and concerns and generally have fun becoming runners! If you're not interested, that is OK too, obviously! :)

Glad you found a few minutes to join us! I love using the Wii step for some extra exercise in the evening when I watch tv. I built my own riser for it a while ago and I use ankle weights and hand weights when I do it.... I call it "Wii Power Step". I step really fast in spurts to really get my heart rate up and pumping... I can really work up a sweat in 30 minutes!

BTW, it was me who was asking the menopause question. TOM finally did arrive (12-ish days late) and I feel better and less bloated, but obviously the "change" has begun..... there goes my metabolism, down the drain!

Did I say that? Sounds like something I would say. I'm practically famous now!
Whoops. sorry molli. You're probably now where near the menopause age.

P- over the summer challenge, you gave me so much good advice, which at the time was hard to follow, but this past week, I've been thinking about it a lot, and really feel that I had a lot to handle, but I kept myself in control, and did not stress eat. The wii has kept me moving a little each day, and I think those endorphins that are released with exercise have helped me deal. I can control what I put in my mouth, and I know I will only feel worse if I continue to stress eat and continue to gain weight. So thank you for the great advice. You are famous!!

Wow - this board is moving! Love reading about everyone's favorite memories! I'm hoping to make some new ones starting tomorrow as we head to Cape Canaveral and get on the Magic on Saturday! Can't wait for our cruise!
:)
Have a fabulous trip!!:cloud9:

How did you know I haven't been flossing lately????? Great addition to the cow. Thanks for doing the cow dona.

Thank you Shannon for coaching this week, and for all the fun questions. I've so enjoyed reading everyone's favorite disney memories.

Good luck all as we weighin tomorrow. :cheer2:
