Biggest Disappointment about Disneyland 60th Special

Unfortunately I have just learned to be very underwhelmed by Disney specials anymore. But I do keep tuning in and hoping! Lol. I hate to disagree with a pp who liked Fall Out Boy's rendition of I Wanna Be Just Like You. I though it was mind numbingly bad. They zapped all of the swing right out of that song. But I guess it must be tough trying to compete with Louis Prima!

Not sure why they included Rainbow Connection. I get Disney owns the Muppets NOW. But back when that song was written, they had nothing to do with Disney. Would've preferred another Disney song, perhaps introduced by Kermit.
Still, if they had to include Rainbow, I wish Kermit and the female singer would've been joined by the songwriter, Paul Williams.

I recognize that this special was not made for me. I'm a fan of the parks but not a diehard follower of the Disney company, its TV shows, and its IP. That said, I thought the execution was still not good. There were a few moments here and there (Josh Gad, Dick Van Dyke, Elton doing Circle of Life), but most of it was dull. [snip]

It didn't need to be a hard-hitting documentary, but there needed to be more substance underneath it all.

Exactly.

We're fans of Disneyland and many of the movies, but we don't have cable and barely ever watch TV because there's very little on that we want to see (currently: Downton Abby, later: the summer Olympics). We were excited about this because we're headed to DL in April, but it wasn't what we were expecting. We hadn't heard of many of the artists, and I was appalled by some of the dancing and apparel. My girls are 11 and almost-6, so it feels quite necessary to make it clear that no, dancing like that (especially the Jungle Book number!) is not appropriate. I really didn't appreciate having to have those conversations for a Disney special, of all things. (And that's without mentioning the commercials! Good grief!) I sort of understand that that kind of dancing seems to have gone mainstream, but I seriously doubt that anyone watches it without thinking "strippers."

On the other hand, I know many here are tired of Frozen but we continue to love every bit of it. It was even bigger bonus that Idina Menzel was dressed appropriately, thank goodness, so I was able to point out how nice she looked. Then my girls were singing along and that was a nice note to end on because then they needed to go to bed for school in the morning. We recorded the second half but I don't know if we'll watch it or not.
