Big Winter Storm coming . . .

I'm so excited!! Our local news here says this will be here Sunday night, and we will be getting 6-12"

YAY!!!!!!!!

I see you get Lake Effect too. I HATE those 2 words! You think us Michiganers and Ohioans would deal with snow better. BTW is the word actually Michiganers? Michiganans? I'll refrain from any OSU/MICH jokes, but I seriously can't think of...Michigonians? lol  :rotfl:

I hate the words Lake Effect Snow...it sends people into a frenzy here. This is the Buffalo area, it snows here! You would think by now that most people living here would know that and just deal with it. I was supposed to grocery shop this morning, then thanks to DH those plans got changed. Now I'll either have to go around 4:00 or tomorrow morning. Not looking forward to that. Why do people feel the need to stock up on bread, milk and eggs when they predict snow? It's not like we're going to be trapped in our houses for days and weeks on end.

It snows, they plow, you go out.

This is what I got off of a local TV channels website for our area.

  • WINTER STORM WATCH: All of WNY: Sat Evening - Sun Evening

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for all of WNY from Saturday evening until Sunday evening. A large winter storm is headed toward WNY and will cross the area on Sunday. While snowfall totals won't be that impressive by WNY standards, a period of freezing rain and sleet will cause travel problems on roads and extensive airport delays.

Storm Team 2 will be keeping a close watch on this developing storm and encourage you to take advantage of our excellent weather tools to stay one step ahead of the storm.
Here is a breakdown of what we can expect as the storm crosses WNY.

SATURDAY EVENING
Snow will begin to arrive over the Southern Tier Saturday evening and then overspread all of WNY by midnight.

SUNDAY MORNING
Several inches of snow are expected across all of WNY by Sunday morning. Areas north of Buffalo can expect 2-4" of snow, while areas south of Buffalo will receive 4-6" of snow.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON
A period of freezing rain and sleet is possible before the precipitation changes to rain for a time in the afternoon.

SUNDAY EVENING
Rain will change back to snow as temps begin to drop as the storm moves away from the area.

MONDAY
Cold and very windy conditions will follow the storm with significant lake effect snow developing across parts of WNY. Winds will be westerly at 20-30mph with higher gusts.

YAY!!!!!!!!

That's what we're hearing for southern Maine. It's expected to start sometime Sunday night and snow all day Monday. I just checked our snow shovels from last year. Two are badly dented and one is missing a strip of metal from the bottom. We have one fully functioning shovel. And no gas for the snowblower.

Guess we better head out and buy a couple of new shovels and fill the gas container.:headache:

After I made my final ice storm emergency kit run this morning, DH and I officially have no place we need to go to. We put up the tree this morning and i will make my awesome meatloaf, scalloped potatoes and fresh green beans with real bacon and a slight hint of bacon "drippings" (grease). . Is it obvious DH is a born Southern boy? Everyone stay safe!

That sounds like a WONDERFUL day!!!! Enjoy it!!

Last night we realized we needed a couple of things from the store just in case, DH said he go in the morning. I made him go out last night and am glad I did.

so many times the weather alerts are hyped up and then it's no where near as bad as predicted, but this mess is all it's cracked up to be. I'd LOVE to get a foot of snow, that is so much nicer than this crap we're getting. Woke up to a dusting of snow, and while something has been coming down all day, it varies every 15-30 minutes between snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain. The latest is the freezing rain, which is melting everything beneath it into a pile of slush and come dark it will all freeze into a solid sheet of ice.

DDs piano studio was supposed to have their Christmas party at 1pm, their teacher called to postpone it until 3pm, when this is supposed to be over. Problem isn't going to be getting there, it will be getting home after dark when everything is freezing back up. I was really hoping she would just cancel or postpone the whole thing.

I forget who posted about state drill - I saw a couple of teams from 4-5 hours away in the Ankeny Target yesterday. Is the competition cancelled? It would really suck to come all this way and then not get to compete.

:wave2: Hi to all the Iowans here!

You never know in Iowa! For the last snow a few weeks ago, SW Iowa was forecasted to receive "light, scattered flurries with no accumulation". We ended up getting 3 inches of snow!! DH is in Dubuque and is worried about travelling home tomorrow. I hope things get better!!

We have about a 1/4 inch of freezing rain accumulating on the surfaces. DDs basketball game was cancelled and DS will have to leave late tomorrow to head back to college. We're all home safe and sound, have some movies picked out to watch; a nice dinner planned....we just hope the electricity doesn't go off. THAT would be a nightmare:eek:  We'll be tucked in until about noon tomorrow when it's supposed to get a bit warmer and thaw everything out.

We just got home from shopping. The snow accumulation has turned to ice. People are getting stranded on main city streets because they can't get traction on the ice. We saw a city bus that didn't make it up an incline in the road, slid backwards at an angle against the curb. . .one guy at a stop light trying to push his small pick-up while the guy driving just spun the wheels. . very slippery out and the sleet is still coming down.

The drill team competition was not cancelled. Our school just couldn't make it. We will have to wait until next year.

Getting to work shouldn't be a huge deal right now. The streets look like they've barely been plowed, but it's still just snow. It's coming home sometime between 11 and midnight that I'm worried about, since by then everything is supposed be ice. Blech.

Actually it was my DS, not DD. He is on the coed team. It is great for the guys. There are about 100 guys and 2000 girls in spandex.

We are getting the nasty little snow here, it makes everything much slicker than the nice pretty large flakes. It took forever to drive 20 miles home from the movies today. I thought I had untill 4pm untill the snow started, not 3pm!

We have the fireplace going and are settled in for the weekend. I hope the ice doesnt come, I hope everyone keeps power!

my apologies to you and your DS! I learned something new today, I had no idea there are coed drill teams.

I'm sorry that you guys are having to deal with all that. It's finally looking like fall here - as of today. The temp is in the upper 60's - don't really need a coat. The trees are finally turning orange and falling - leaves everywhere.

.... and it's December 1st. Isn't there something wrong with this picture? :confused3

We have about 4" of really fine, dry snow. This would have easily been about 18" if there was any moisture in the snow. It is now sleeting so that will make things interesting if it keeps up. It at least looks like winter now!
