Big warning for those considering Mission Space

My GS 10yrs rode MS a few weeks ago. My DH and myself did not since we had a full stomach and read there is alot of g-force.

we don't like the g-force on our chest from RNR...although we thought the rest of RNR was smooth and a great ride.

GS loved MS.

My DH, Brother-in-law, DS7, DD15, DD11 and dear nephew(6) all rode on July 20th. DH and the girls/boys were fine- my DBIL was quite ill. Everyone but DBIL went on mutiple times over the course of the week. The boys/girls are too "naive" to close eyes/turn heads; my DH knows enough about visual perception that he heeded directions. DBIL would'nt try it twice! My DH did say that there was incredible chest pressure/compression, much different than any coaster sensation. I have an inner ear problem (horrible virus of middle ear nerve that is taking FOREVER to heal), so no ride for me; besides, I'm a wimp).

My DH's impression: if you are prone to motion sickness AT ALL and think you might be likely to close eyes/move head- stay away. If you can control the motion sickness and your head/eyes, its fine. My coaster-fanatic children rate it as not as "adrenalin-junkie"-like as a coaster, but way cool!

Guess the youngest DD5 and I will stick to IASW!

Frankly, I'm a bit disappointed that Disney would create a ride that requires you to stare straight ahead at all times or else you will be sick. That's just ridiculous! This seems to be more than just a motion sickeness problem. It seems like EVERYONE will be sick on this ride unless you stare straight ahead, regardless if you suffer from motion sickness or not. I expect a bit more from Disney.

Not everyone will get sick if they don't stare straight ahead. I know because I turned my head around to see!;) I loved it, I thought it was great. I did not feel ill even after looking around the cabin several times during the ride. Dh did fine too. Ds (8) felt a little ill, but he suffers from really bad allergies (grass, trees, dust, mold) and he was having tough time down there in FL breathing at all, so I wasn't surprised. He was fine 20 minutes later and now will tell you he loved it! We DID see several people actually getting sick in the exit area! Yuck! But, percentage wise it's got to be less than 5%.

I don't care if I lose my intestinal lining and have a stroke - I am riding this puppy next time we are WDW !!!

From what I have heard this baby is the closest thing to a real NASA flight simulator that the general public can possibly find!!!

SO if I get off the ride and head to the nearest trash can...that is ok.

I rode something atthe NM state fair once last year that was so punishing I am amazed I am alive. A sheer human centrifige that rpetedly change the angle of spin from flat with the horizon, to a 45 then 90 degree angle to finally completely upside down. The central colum spun. Each of the arms radiating off the central column spun, and each of the chairs attached to the radial arms spun... and changed angle of spin duuring the course of the ride... Nearest thing to a human cuisenart. and there was no benefit of having anything in front of you to look at...it spun to fast to ever focus on anything. hahahaha...

If the general consensus among park-goers is the same as on these boards, perhaps it's just the "I'm gonna try it even if it kills me" mentality!!:teeth:

Once these folks have found out for themselves whether or not they'll be able to handle it, maybe the attraction will lose its seemingly high nausea factor. Folks whose curiosity has been answered with unpleasant results will no longer wish to ride.

By that time, surely most of the riders will be those who know what's involved and can ride it with no problem.

As for me, I'm the one reaching for the white bag in the airplane seat . . . NO WAY am I riding this one!!!:D :D :D

I rode and yes I also felt the effects, but it is a awesome ride. I can't wait to ride again.

My sister and I rode Mission Space last night (AP preview). I get very queasy on Star Tours and Body Wars. I just won't go on those rides anymore. I've been on Mission Space twice (last night and about 2 Sundays ago) and loved it! It is a great ride. It doesn't make me sick at ALL like Star Tours or Body Wars.

I hope Disney doesn't "tone it down" too much. I kept my eyes on the screen in front of me the entire time and didn't feel like I was spinning at all. The simulated G force is great! :) My sister enjoyed the ride as well.

Edited to add:

By the way, it was a WALK ON yesterday when we were there. We got there around 6:45 PM, during a rainstorm (fortunately we were smart enough to bring umbrellas!) Only AP holders could get by the CM checking passes. The posted wait time for Standby was 10 minutes but there was nobody in the Fast Pass/Standby or Single Rider lines! It was too cool!!! :)

How does this ride work? I don't get sick on tilt-a-whirl or tea cups but, I get car sick pretty bad sometimes. One other thing...is there a Dr. in the house? if so I bought some of the meclizine like some have advised, I am a little worried about taking it though beacuse I had a bad time with compazine (sp) when I was preg. and throwing up. Sorry for all the questions. I would love to do the motion sim's especially space.
tua, Jessica

We just returned and my husband and grandson (9) rode it 3 times. Twice during soft preview, and then on AP day (friday). They both loved it and didn't have any ill effects. Both can ride star tours/body wars with no problem and kept trying to convince me to try. I get really sick on both of the simulator rides (along with the ones at US/IOA) and decided to hold off. I also tried the motion sickness meds and they don't help me at all. I can do roller coasters and ToT without a problem. Eveyone kept saying not to raise your head or try to look to the sides and you'll be OK. Maybe my next trip next month. I just wasn't ready to spoil my grandson's day by being a sick Nana.

I just road it earlier this week and thought it was great. Didn't think it was any more intense than Tower or Terror and I didn't feel queezy at all, just a bit disoriented after the ride. The thing that made me feel a little queezy was that spinning wheel thing in the queue. I couldn't look at it because it made me feel sick. Once I got out of that area though I felt fine.

We rode it a couple of weeks ago too...me, DH, DDs 13 and 8, and DS 10. I warned all the kids to keep their heads back and watch the screen in front of them, and no one had any problems. Of course, we like the extreme and thrill rides, and do not easily get motion sickness. We enjoyed the ride, but no one wanted to get right back on.

Jessica, I wouldn't take a chance with anything that ends with '...zine'. I found that I am allergic to compazine (also from morning sickness) and the doctors' told me not to take anything that falls into the phenothyazine (spelling???) family. Just a thought.
My dd (9) and I love the spinning rides, like teacups and such. We're hoping it won't be too different. And she's been taught to pick a 'spot' when she dances and has to twirl, so she won't get dizzy. We'll be giving it a shot too. Can't wait for two weeks to pass and we can say we tried it too. None of the other 'simulator' rides bother any of us. In fact, if we see a show about rollercoasters on t.v. and they show footage from the front of the car, we love to focus on it and try for the same stomach dropping feeling!!
But thanks for the heads up Pete. We need to be able to make informed decisions.

I don't know if I am allergic to it but, when I got it at the hospital I felt like I had a panic attack. I wanted to run screaming from the hospital and crawl out of my skin. I have never been afraid of hospitals or needles or such so I know it was the meds. YUCK that was the worsk feeling I have ever experienced!
I don't like the anticipation of rides with a big climb then a drop but, even when I did go on them I didn't feel sick I was just scared s**tless!
GRRR! I want to do the rides but, I am such a chicken. :( I know I'll do thunder cuz, I did it when I was 10. We have a park here in MN called Valley fair and there is a ride called Steel Venom. I went on it a couple of weeks ago and I worked myself up so bad getting on it that by the time it was over I was almost crying and praying the whole time to God to help me through it.( I wasn't sick just scared) After about an hour I thought it wasn't so bad but, there was no way I was going to get back in line and torture myself again.

Sorry this was so long, I just think with each kid and year of age I get more and more chicken. :(

Kind of a spoiler - trying to explain how the ride works.

You know those little merry go rounds they have at the playground? Once you get it going you feel like you are being pulled away from the center, right? That is how the ride works. Except that you aren't watching other kids on the other side of the merry go round and there is no playground scenery to add to that spinny/dizzy sensation.

The attraction seats are very comfortable, there is a harness that comes over your head, and the screen you look at tilts forward (imagine a space ship console board with buttons and lights and a viewing window). This part of the ride is basically 18 inches or so from your face.

There are certain points where you are supposed to feel like you are being pushed back into your chair, so that is when the ride is spinning. There are other moments when the ride tilts side to side, as if you were in a free-flying vehicle that was making turns. It's not too sudden or extreme IMHO.

People are getting WAY sick on this ride!!! I heard from a Cast Member that they had so many issues with this during the cast preview that they were going to tone it down for guests. It's now in AP previews, and folks are coming off this ride getting very sick. So, if you are planning on doing Mission Space, I would strongly suggest that you a) have a strong stomach and b) don't eat before you do this. I'm really hoping they get these issues worked out as Disney is putting a great deal into this new attraction. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Pete

Sorry Pete, but any toneing down would cause a huge delay in opening along due to the programing and the fact that all the Imagineers have left Florida who have worked on the ride. As stated before, most of the problems Jim Hill and others have stated are extremly rare and somewhat toned up as entertainment for the reader. I've ridden M:S 31 times and have not seen a single person get sick.

Also, closing your eyes makes you aware of the centerfuge, so that will get you sick MUCH quicker.

We rode M:S on July 21 - my 7 year old DD even rode it twice in a row. I cannot say enough about the ride, and I have inner ear problems! I thought it was simply awesome!! It was the first time in a long time that I really felt like a kid getting on an attraction. I had butterflies in my stomach, and I was nervous yet excited.

After we exited the attraction, my DH and I both agreed that we could not feel the spinning. We were just so excited to try it out that we forgot that we were actually spinning.

Can't wait to go on it again in December!!

13 days and can hardly WAIT to try it!;) I have read ALL the reviews on this board, and experiences, and have decided to try it for myself.:o I will let you ALL know in 15 days how it was.;)

I have now ridden 4 times. All 4 times were with three other people. None of them have gotten sick.

I love it! I find that it gets better with each ride as you calm down about the effects and enjoy things like the views you have. For the person who found it boring I am just amazed. The G force when you Lift off alone was enough to thrill me! I guess it takes all kinds.

The CMs do recommend a delay of 15 minutes between riding. I have a feeling that when this opens up the lines will FORCE that delay! They were VERY strict this weekend on APs.

My teenage sons and I rode Mission Space and had no problems. We did make sure to keep our heads against the back of the seats and just look at the screen in front of us. I don't like being in tight places but didn't have a problem with the ride. We couldn't even feel any spinning. We thought it was a great ride. I could see if you are prone to motion sickness that you should probably skip this ride.
