Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Well I was really scared when I first went on it at WDW, but I quickly got over that fear when I realized the front of the train was at the bottom of the largest drop before the back of the train was even over the hill. It does spin you around a bit but its not too bad as you can see whats going on at all times and know what to expect. I would say except for the section when you go around in a circle for what seems like forever its really quite tame.

It's one of my 4 year old's favorite rides, (Or it was when she was 3, anyway) but she also loved Space Mountain and ToT, so take that for what it's worth.

It is pretty tame, but it's fun.

They don't call it the "wildest ride in the wilderness" for nothing folks! Its supposed to be a runaway mine train. It is a lot of fun and yes it is jerky, but that's part of its appeal. The theming of this ride is awesome. It's fun just to ride and see how many animals you can find.

Yes, the goat is back after refurbishment. He's now brown instead of gray.

Thanks. It will be a year or so before I get out there again, So I will be looking out for this goat as I always enjoy seeing it after that second climb.

Tip: Get a seat in the middle car, because there's one part of the ride where it goes down and the front and back slow down a bit while the middle keeps going at the same pace. I didn't notice it until my roommate pointed it out to me (but then again I rarely ride BTMRR).

It may be tame but all the Disney coasters are tame. That said, BTMRR is a classic and one of the best attractions at DLR. I've been loving that ride since it opened in the late 70s and it still delivers, I've ridden it several times in the last week and we still love it!

The surprises of the track with it's twists and turns and the thorough themeing make this ride an experience you must enjoy. Nothing to fear, just have fun with the whole environment and pretend you are really on a runaway train in the old west, it still floats my boat! Notice all the animals on the ride, there are lots if you really look beyond the obvious ones.

My favorite part of this ride is when you go down into the dark mineshaft and you can't see anything and suddenly the train turns to the right and everyone flies over to the left side of the train carts right before the second hill climb, I love it every time!

BTMRR is must do on the must do list for DL, period.

I don't know if I'd consider California Screamin', Rock N rollercoaster, or Expedition Everest to be "tame."

To add onto your tip for coasters in general....

My friend from college who used to be an RO (ride operator) on BTMRR said that the longer the train, the back is the best in general on most coasters especially BTMRR. The front will be slow because as it clears the top of a climb, it doesn't go full speed because the rest of the train hasn't made it to the top of the drop. The middle would be place that kinda remains constant.

I would in general no doubt but in the Disney coaster scheme of things I would agree they are above typically tame.

Bigger as in Six Flags or Cedar Point or bigger as in Space Mountain and Cali Screamin'?

I love Disney coasters but I'm probably in the minority of people who love ALL coasters, I love big, big coasters that really put a little fear in your heart too! I love all types of rides, I like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan all the way up the spectrum to X2 and Goliath at Magic.

I find that people who like thrill rides kinda hate Disney rides as a whole and people who love Disney parks don't like the parks with the real big thrill rides. I roll with both crowds!

I couldnt have said it better myself!! I love Disney rides, from Its a small world, to the mad tea party, to SM, and I love coasters at other parks as well! I live in NorCal, so the only park in SoCal I have been to is DL. I would love to go to MM someday, but I always prefer to pass it and go strait to DL. We have Great America up here (doesnt even compare to MM), but I still love them (all but the wooden coaster rides, they creep me out!)

YEA!!!!!!!! I missed him! I'm glad to see he's chewed his way back onto the Mountain...! It seemed like he was gone for so long- I wondered what happened to him.

We love fast train! - That's what my kids call it. We are going tomorrow for Mom's day and BTMR is always is a must. My 85 year old dad always goes on it and my oldest dd went on it when she was 3. We ride in the last car and turn around and look backwards for a head rush during the spiral turn!

You'll be fine. It is very smooth and fun. Hang on to those hats and glasses, this is the wildest ride in the wilderness!

BTMRR has a special place in my heart - it's DD4's first coaster, and she went on it twice. I can't wait to go back!!

We considered BTMRR the best "family" coaster in either park. It is generally open (so not dark for the littlier kids). Just jerky enough to be fun.

DS (4 at the time) found Mulholland Madness much scarier. And even some of the small coasters at 6 flags.
