Big tarp on Main Street - Is it still there?

The bakery area scaffolding now has images of the bakery building on it. Still not attractive, but better. Also, Christmas decorations have come down and Christmas music on Main Street has stopped.

While I get your point, really I do, I don't think it really applies here. Most of us who booked for January did so with some understanding that offseason means more refurbs. However, every single one of my 6 trips to WDW has been in a value season, including one previous January trip, and it has NEVER happened that there were multiple headliners down at the same time, or multiple tarped-off buildings on Main Street, or multiple evening shows dark simultaneously. This year has all of the above, plus the ongoing Fantasyland construction and now the construction on Peter Pan's new queue as well, and the vast majority of it was announced well after the point where cancellation or rescheduling ceased to be a practical/cost effective option.

So yeah, I'm going to vent about it a bit. It won't ruin our trip but it is very frustrating to go when there are so many construction projects going on simultaneously, and I do wish Disney had split things up a little better. There are other value & regular seasons, you know... It doesn't ALL have to be done in the 6 weeks between the Christmas/New Year and Presidents Day peaks!

I am leaving the same time as you and I agree. We go every year around this time and there has never been this much going on. I won't apologize that I am a little bummed about it. What we have decided to do is change up our touring plans a little. We are going to concentrate on doing things that we haven't done before. I've scheduled some different dining, going to DTD for the first time, staying at Boardwalk instead of CS....so psyched about Splash Mountain. STill Wish I could see MSEP! It is my favorites.

The more pics I see the more I feel for the January crowd. We're going next month for a long weekend. I think we'll skip MK altogether. Since we can go anytime, that's not a big deal to us. I think most people would be disappointed, if they only got to go to WDW once, or there were many years between visits. Since I'm not one of those people, I won't tell them how they should feel. I also wouldn't come down on them for being disappointed, if I wasn't visiting this time of year. If it doesn't affect me, I may not be totally objective.

We leave next week and are trying to stay positive about it. This isn't our first rodeo as we've traveled during these 'slow months' before and I would be lying if I said I'm not somewhat disappointed by all of the simultaneous refurbs. Fair enough that it should be expected to a certain extent, but I can't think of a time where we've had this much 'progress' at one time in terms of building refurbs and attractions that are down. It's just plain ugly, no way around it.

ETA: forgot this pic!

well at least peter pan is still OPEN . I hope it still is in 20 days. who knows. Like previous posters, I can't believe so many things are not open or 'normal' at one time. I would be curious to know if there was ever any previous time with so much closed, parads dark, tarps, etc at one time.

Some good photos of Tarp Kingdom are available HERE.

Thank you for posting this!

I have to say... it gets worse and worse! It's actually become mildly funny to me now. :upsidedow

Is there any area of MK that doesn't have tarps or walls? Tomorrowland?

One of the best things about a Disney trip for me is how photogenic the place is. Taking pictures is a major part of the joy of the trip. Poor MK is not so photogenic right now, though.

Maybe instead of trying to get pretty pictures this time, I'll make a game of it and try to get as many ugly ones as possible. Make a little photo essay on how awful MK looks. ;)

Yeah. I will just echo the previous posters. We leave in 11 days, and I am pretty bummed out about 2 shows being down. I REALLY love the nighttime parade at MK. It's one of my favorite things about Disney and between that and Fantasmic and the early hours, a little of the magic is not there. I knew about Fantasyland and I expected some refurbs, but if I'd know there would be THIS much stuff down AND big ugly tarps right in front of the castle I would have picked a different time to go. Disney is expensive. It's not our local amusement park, so I do expect more from them. I'm sure we'll still have fun, but I just think it's kind of sucky to have so much stuff down all at once.

Yeah, I feel you.

I picked our week because it's dd's birthday week. That was the whole point of the trip. So through all this, I've been saying we wouldn't have changed weeks anyway.

But with that last batch of photos, I'm going to revise that opinion. I think if I'd known exactly HOW extensive the refurbs would be, I'd have thought to myself, "Hmmm, self, you know what? You could just tell dd about the trip ON her birthday and schedule it for spring."

This will only be her second trip, and there's a lot she doesn't remember from her first. And we're bringing my MIL and her sister also--both first-timers--and this is not how I'd have chosen to introduce them to MK.

ALL that said... it's too late now. So off we go (15 days!) and it's still pretty exciting.

I wouldn't mind spending less time in MK, and more time doing other things, anyway. We spent SO MUCH time in MK her first trip. Now that she's a little older and MK is under tarps, maybe she'll be open to some other things instead for our unscheduled days. Might be fun to explore Ft Wilderness, or go to EP or AK twice instead of MK twice, or check out DTD or the boardwalk (never been).... we'll see.

On a happy note....

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is set to test every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday until it officially opens

That's a bit exciting! I wonder if dd will be interested in this. Our MK day is a Sunday, so if she's interested we'll be able to try it.

I apologize if I missed a post that is similar to mine...

However does anyone know exactly what they are doing under that tarp?

Our last trip the Bakery was being worked on too... you still had to walk under a "rigging" although it was no where near as tall or dull or monumental. It was still hideous and you still couldn't actually see the bakery, but this took it to a new level.

I'd love to know what has been going on since my last trip was in June...

I looked at my new husband at the time and commented on how bad it looked at how disappointed I was. And now I am just in shock that it's gotten worse.

Does anyone know of a list that shows when refurbs are due to be completed and if there is a list, where can it be found?

My new plan is to have us all dress up in our ponchos and get photos right in front of the scrims/boxes.:rotfl2::rotfl:

And yes, I do plan to "interact" with the scrims for the photos (i.e., like trying to open the "door" on the scrim or look though the window, etc).

Since we can't avoid TARP CITY than we're going to try to have the most fun with it that we can!

(And yes, I will be leaving my complaints, um, I mean comments, with Disney Guest Relations once I get there and get a feel for everything)

However, I am THRILLED that us January Peeps actually get one brand new thing -- SotMK! We are so trying that on Tuesday of our trip!!

We are going next week and getting so disappointed. So many attractions are down, Electrical Parade AND Fantasmic and now this.... While I understand going at a quieter time means maintenance and some rides being down, I think this is over the top... surely they could have the Electrical Parade while Fantasmic is down and vice versa.

As has been mentioned a few times, it's not going to ruin the trip. However my sister and I are coming from Australia so cancellation is impossible and it will be quite sometime before we go back so it's very disappointing.

I'm going to have some fun with the tarp photos too. DD10 loves goofy poses, I'm sure I can get her to play along a bit!

And I'll be sure to drop guest services a line about my feelings on tarp kingdom while I'm there.
