Big runDisney announcement coming in April

Sorry new to thread. What does FB stand for? Also, I'm looking to run a Disney half or less for the first time. Any recommendations as to which one would be the best?

FB is Facebook.

I would suggest looking at the run Disney site and seeing which races appeal to you. Many have a theme, which might help you pick (or rule out) some of the options.

I don't understand why Disney doesn't realize that men like to run, too.

While I don't necessarily agree with Disney's decision, it MUST be based upon market research. Disney must have determined that they can make more money from a women's only race than from a more gender neutral race.

I won't be doing the race because of the timing issue.

As others have said, I see more negatives than positive from my perspective in this race.

On the positive:

Early race on west coast to mesh with W&D half for Coast to coast medal.
I like the Distance. Half marathons are extremly popular.

Negative:

Another Women focused event

Too close to both Marathon and Princess weekend to try and get CTC all at once (I think the same thing with DL half and W&D). March or April would allow recovery time from Jan. (or princess) to go out for Coast to coast, but would run into spring break.

Right now, my plans are Disneyland this year, Disneyworld 2013, or 2014, then probably onto other races. I was originally thing 2013 but may bump it back a year and go for the Goofy in 2014. Spend the money 1 time and get all three medals at once. My teaching schedule doesn't allow easy access to CTC with their current race schedule.

And if their market research showed that a male only race, or Caucasian only race, would make them more money that would be ok? I have a feeling it wouldn't be.

I just think there are so many fun options that don't necessarily focus on women. A Peter Pan race would be hilarious, with people in pajamas, Captain Hooks, and YES, Tinkerbells.

If they really wanted to include Tinkerbell, they should have called it the Neverland Half Marathon, then it wouldn't seem like Disney is excluding men, yet again.

Agreed. Neverland Half is an awesome idea for a race, even if it sounds a little bit like a Michael Jackson race.

Agreed. I don't get the appeal of Tinkerbell to grown women anyway. While I remember watching Peter Pan as a kid, I don't really remember much interest in Tinkerbell growing up (as opposed to the princess movies that I saw). I've seen the Tinkerbell movies but only because I have kids. :confused3

Maybe it's more because of memories of Tinkerbell in the parks? I certainly remember seeing her fly across WDW as kid. Never been to DL so not sure how that ties in.

People mentioned that not only do ment not get to place in their categories, they don't get medals at the women's races. I knew about the first part, but not the latter. That just makes it worse, imo.

Oooh, looks like someone corrected it and it's medals for everyone. Glad to hear that.

Male only/male focused (since the Disney women's races are women-focused vs women only) would be fine and dandy with me.

Race based I would have more issues with. Not sure I can truly say why this would cause me grief, other than that it would.

Neverland or Peter Pan I could deal with.

I find it especially poignant that on the day we lost one of the great women runners (Grete Weitz) who helped pave the way for EQUALITY in running, we have an announcement of yet another woman-centric race. :(

On the plus side, I can take that $120 and put it in my charity fund for Boston 2013.

Going with my "add a pirate half to princess weekend" theme why not do a Tinkerbell half on Saturday and a Peter Pan or Capt. Hook half on Sunday? It would open up a bunch of possibilities. You have a race for men, you'd not only have a whole additional race for revenue but some people would do both, and you could do an additional coast to coast medal or even two. Do a pirate double (Pirate half in WDW and Capt. Hook half in DL) and an, I don't know, pixie dust double or something with the Princess and Tinkerbell.

You know there would be people who do all 4 to get the 6 medals.

Ugh.

I wonder if RunDisney will announce a new C2C medal that looks like:

I'm gonna put $120 in my Give Kids the World fund.

I'm disappointed it's at Disneyland, but I know WDW already has quite a few races I could fly down for if I really wanted to. I have no right to complain!

Pretty sure its within the same calendar year.

Well, since I'd likely do the W&D in 2012 anyway, maybe I can do this one to get my first (and probably only) coast-to-coast. Hmmmm.

Does anyone room up together if they're going out to these DL races solo?

I'm wondering a couple things - will RunDisney be changing their name to RunDisney(ButOnlyWomen)? And, given the addition of yet another women-centered race, and the plethora of princess and fairy stuff at WDW (with a corresponding lack of stuff aimed at boys), do any other guys feel that Disney would be happier if men just weren't at the parks in the first place?

ETA - I want to do a Disneyland half - SIL lives in Cali, and it would be a good excuse for us to go visit. But, I refuse to run this one. Even if I did, I could not help pace SIL to a PR - I'm a few minutes faster than her, but I am sure that Disney is going to impose the "No men in corral A," no age awards for men, and the no announcement when men cross the finish line stuff as well.

This would have been so much better. I just don't get these "women only" races. Both DH and I run; why would we spend all that money to travel to CA for a race that is thumbing its nose at him? No temptation for me to run this one. I'll stick with marathon weekend at WDW where the whole family is welcome, thanks.
