Big runDisney announcement coming in April

I'm actually really excited!
Since we only had one major Disney run on the west coast it's great news for us.
Sorry there are others that are unhappy with this decision.
Disney is trying to give some fairness to us over here.
I really appreciate it.

I suspect that you won't find a whole lot of interst in a men's race. See, men (well, any under 35 or 40) have been told pretty much their whole life that girls need to be included too, because to exclude them would be unfair. But, women, in roughly the same age bracket, have been told that they need to have women-only (or at least women-centered) events and races in order to archieve parity/compensate for historical oppresion/revel in the strength of womanhood/experience sisterhood in a noncompetive setting/etc. So, men expect to compete with women in any given race, but women know that the option of a women-centered event is a given, and socially accepted.

While I would agree that you aren't likely to find much interest in a men's only race, in talking with the men I know who run, their reasoning is very different. It's more of a just don't care whether women run with them or not.

As for the bursting of women's only races, again I would somewhat disagree with your reasoning for the increased interest. While I agree that it has alot to do with sisterhood of sorts, I think that it's more about a good ol' fashioned girls weekend and girly girl things, which is just a grown up extension of the slumber parties we used to have.

In addition, for me, the appeal is having a race where it's a weekend "all about me" :lovestruc When we come down for the other Disney races, hubby is running in them also (and finishing lots faster than me) In addition, there are also other races he does that I do not compete in because I'm too slow, such as the Boston Marathon but I come to support/cheer for him. For the Princess weekend, this is the one race a year where hubby comes to the race and spectate and cheer for me-the one race where I am assured that at least one spectator is cheering specifically for me!

I don't think in any way the issue is that it's at DL. The issue is that's it is another women's race. Lots of hype was given to this announcement and then half of the followers of Run Disney were basically told they were not encouraged to participate.

Sorry for lack of clarity - there is still too much blood in my caffeine system. I expect to see women in any race I run. I would be shocked to find that a race was oriented toward men (and yes, I have wondered for some time why large races do not provide, at least to those who preregister, mens and women tech shirts), and would not run it once I found out.

I suspect that, if you did a little poking and prodding, you would find that most men pretty much expect to share the course with women, regardless of the race or the distance.

It will be a long time before I do any Disney race. The fall trip to Europe fell through because of the cost of airfare and I was considering the Wine & Dine after all but I think I'll find another race to do instead.

Not only is the cost getting ridiculous but they are making no secret that they really don't want men to run. No problem. If I want to incorporate running and Disney I'll do the Gasparilla, Space Coast, or even Savannah and then add on a couple of days in the parks.

I have no problems at all with a west coast race - we're also on the west coast and a DL race means a 2 hour flight, as opposed to a 6 hour flight with at least one stopover and a 3 hour time difference. We're not choosing to run it because if we pay the money for a Disney trip, it has to be for the whole family, not just for me. My DH is also a runner and he has no interest in a Tinkerbell race... and neither do I, for that matter.

Wasn't this race hyped starting at the Princess this year? And the announcement was billed as something princesses would be excited to hear?

Yeah, I think maybe I will pass on a Disney race in the near future. Maybe I should just plan a Disney trip around the Keys100 race or something.

Actually, Disney is getting pretty close to saying that they really don't want men in the parks. My son is old enough that Pooh & Tigger are holding less attraction for him, so character meals are becomming less of an option. DD has her choice of princess meals, he has Chef Mickeys or Crysal Palace.

I would definately agree with you on that one. However, my point on the appeal of the women's races to women, I suspect has more to do with a fun girl's weekend/bonding/slumber party mentality, then it has to do with equality or empowerment.

Yep...before the first corral was released, they said something about it and that it would be something all of "the princesses out there would be VERY VERYinterested in." And the flier that was given out at the expo was basically "addressed" to women...something like "attention all Princesses, Queens, and fairies..." My initial guess was another Princess at DL. I still want an explanation on all the clues!

Boy, do they ever know how to make $$$...so, I just registered, and there's an option for the commemorative pin AND a commemorative necklace!!! Had to have them! :rotfl:

I'm 100% a girly-girl and I eat this stuff up, I admit it! Hey, I'd even pay extra at a "gender-neutral" race if a women's cut shirt was offered!

I purchased the pin and necklace too! I am beyond excited to be a part of this ignagural race plus Tink is my favorite Disney character! I'm already planning my costume!

For those already planning on running it I have a question: Would you be as excited if it were not a gender exclusive race? Let's go with the Race to Neverland theme. You can keep your race necklace which I assume is Tinkerbell.

I would be more excited if everyone was included. I enjoy chatting with the guys in my corral before the race. I've never done an all women's race before.

I think my dad might even run a pride run, and he doesn't run.

My dad would be all over that - actually I should see if he wants to come up (mom could come too) for Pride weekend!. He's the best. He has always been so supportive - we're going to a PFLAG meeting tonight, and he was actually involved before I came out. My mom's supportive too...she's just more quiet about it.

If the dates worked out, I'd be running this. And, yes, I'd be running it whether it was Tink or NL and be just as excited either way.

What I wouldn't be excited for, if I were able to run this, is the insane amount of fairy wings that will be donned and smacking people left and right. I'm all for costumes, especially for a Disney race, but I can see how the wings would get very annoying very quickly. I know people wore wings for the Princess, but seeing as this is Tink-themed, I can see the number of wings going way up.
