Big runDisney announcement coming in April

runDisney just posted:

Run Disney
Triathlon season is underway. Is anyone adding a triathlon to their race calendar this year?

I don't think that has to do with the clues, though. I would hope they'd keep all of the info contained in the clue announcement.

Someone on the FB page suggested a triathalon with the swim portion through the Seven Seas Lagoon. :rotfl2:

I think I'd want a haz-mat suit to swim that!

I'm fully prepared to be underwhelmed...just in case.

I am a sucker for a "big announcement". I try to keep myself from getting too hyped, but I always end up getting sucked in.

I just want to know if it will be a 2011 or 2012 race. If it's a 2011 race in Disney World (long shot for the 2011 race, I know) it may replace my trip for the Wine & Dine this year.

I'm sure many people have swam worse. I've swam much worse in my more adventurous days. :)

I just can't imagine Disney opening the lagoon to swimmers for an event.

Agreed. I think WAY too many people are reading WAY too much into anything posted on their page. I'm frankly surprised I haven't seen anyone quoting something in a comment someone made as "OOH A CLUE!!!"

I think the ONLY true clues are the ones they are giving us in the pictures.

I think the only chance of them ever doing a tri is in the middle of the summer. Certainly not March 4th.

Speaking of which, I wish someone from runDisney was a morning person. :surfweb::rotfl: I am not liking having to wait all day for the next clue! Patience is not my strong point.

I think if Disney does a tri, and I don't think they will do an official one, it will be between the end of Food & Wine and Thanksgiving. The summer is both too busy and the air temp too hot and humid. The pros can deal with it at Kona but the Disney target demo probably would have some issues. I know I would.

Me, too. Not that I'm in the market for a tri anytime soon.

But I also think whatever the new event is, its timing will be in the off season to attract its target demo to the parks and resorts. runDisney's not going to offer a new event during its busy seasons. For that reason, I do think it will be at WDW rather than DLR (which needs another race event).

My $.02, which is probably not worth even that much.

If the idea is to attract people during the off-season, wouldn't that eliminate anything around the Flower and Garden Festival? I thought that was a pretty popular time.

Ok throwing another idea out there:

Fantasia/Dumbo = 3/4 = 0.75

75 years ago next year (2012) Snow White, the first Disney animation movie was released. It would explain why the Princess racers might be excited about it... Just throwing ideas around. :confused3

I doubt very seriously they would do a tri because, like someone posted earlier, there is no swimming in the lakes due to an amoeba, naegleria fowleri. I would be very interested in a tri if the swimming was safe.

Depends on the time of the festival. Sure, the spring break/Mardi Gras/Easter Crowds are high. But at the end of the Festival, before Star Wars Weekends kicks in might be an option.

The Minnie Marathon 15K that was replaced by the Princess was held, what, in the first weekend of May? Someone remind me - I have a poor memory. I'm thinking that timing might be good.

As I said, this is my speculation. I just don't see what's in it for Disney to hold another race (at least one of any distance) during peak season. Maybe a 5K or short scavenger race...

Well, if you guys are right and the run is 3/4 that could work as I just rebooked my Aug '11 cruise to 3/4/12. I could run then catch the boat.

Why laugh...All tris to date have swam in 7 seas.... including the current IM FL 70.3

The humidity would be bad... May is tough already. Anytime between June and the first of October brings in the amoeba, naegleria fowleri (microbial junk, thanks rubato) that you do not want to be in. March/April is not a bad time. May not even need a wetsuit depending on how warm Feb is in the given year. Though I am not much for destination tris in the early spring.

I think Disney wants to do another tri in house. I think they are mifffed that they gave away one of the better periods (May) and then had to pull their self-produced event. Saying that, I would also think that they would love to have a well positioned production company add Disney as a venue. Elite is looking for new home for their new series and Disney would foot the bill nicely.

So the issue would be what event would you hold. The Olympic distance failed and was bitten with all sorts of issues - some Disney driven... Point to point bike course and a bike course that was not an Oly distance. Sprint events are not a 'big' draw. in the big venue IM distances, the 70.3 is there in May and a full would be a tough for WDW to manage since is takes roads out of service for the entire day.

I would do a tri if held in the spring or fall and the disney cost did not make a sprint price out like an IM.

But all this aside, I think we are looking at an expanded ESPN weekend - that is until clue 2 changes my mind.

I really need to be working and training. I wish this would end and the mouse would just announce.

I stand corrected, then. I was told no races swim in Disney waters. Still, I wouldn't want to swim in either Bay Lake or the SSL after the horror stories I've heard about sickness caused by ingesting the water on accident (people not listening & swimming or falling in).

Actually, I was thinking a little incorrectly, also....I consider them both one lake since there is a conduit between the two and boat traffic to mix the water. So the sprint tris were in 7 Seas and the longer events in Bay lake. And I am not a real fan of the water there.
