Big Red / Little Red storyline being removed from Kilimanjaro Safaris

Well I sure am in the minority but I enjoy the storyline. Sure, I've heard it a few dozen times but I love watching my son get excited about the chase at the end. I've never felt like they go too fast during the prime viewing areas and I highly doubt that they will be able to slow the vehicles down too much towards the end of the ride - where they normally speed up for the chase - since this will effect the wait time in line.

Still, regardless of what they do to the ride it will always be a MUST for us!

As many of you know, original plans for AK included an area of the park that focused on mythical creatures. I could care less what they do with the BR/LR story and would be more interested in them spending budget $$ on the more than rumored Midway Madness, which was planned for this area.

I have to say it's been about 3 1/2 years since I've been back to Disney. But I see the BR/LR story line as moving KS from a Zoo experience to a Theme Park experience. As a family we go the the zoo 6 or 7 times a year, and both my sons love the animals. But where else could they pretend they were helping to rescue an elephant. I know it might be annoying after the first 5 or 6 times through with the same story, but what is the difference between this and the Great Movie ride shootout scene? My opinion is that those who don't get there as often will be missing something.

The Bronx Zoo does...at least it used to.
For the most part, local zoos do not do this. There are very few that do...even for the ones that do, Animal Kingdom still can't be compared to a "local zoo." They don't even compare. Taking away the storyline from KS doesn't all of a sudden make them into the local zoo as it was suggested.

I think that's a great idea...the big red/little red storyline didn't really add anything to the attraction for me. I'd rather have it be funny/cheesy like the jungle cruise, or informative with facts about the animals we're seeing.

MousePlanet and Jim Hill are reporting that Disney is getting ready for a major rehab of Kilimanjaro Safari, with the main reason being to eliminate the Big Red / Little Red storyline and make the ride just an African Safari with no "big climax ending". Your thoughts?

I'm thrilled to hear this!!:thumbsup2 :yay:

:thumbsup2 I agree, I though that the LR/BR was a waste of attraction time.

a great idea. after seeing real animals, a couple of fake elephants is so cheesy. i like the idea of the safari being just that: a safari.

I always thought the story line was a little sick, really... i could see if they changed it to LR is stuck in a mudpit or fell in a hole, but i dont like the whole shooting-elephants thing.

KS isn't a real safari. Except for the giraffe/antelope areas most of the animal are enclosed in such a way so that they aren't' allowed to freely wander wherever they want. The animals that are allowed to roam freely are the ones that would pose no harm to humans. On a real safari, you could be chased by rhinos (like my school advisers were which did make for really amazing pictures) or by cheetahs (which my friends did when they went to Namibia last year.

It is a good experience yes, but a true Africa safari no.

I'll show you all pictures when I get home from Namibia.

I'd love to see pictures!

A mysthical creature area? My daughter would have been in awe. :)

That's actualy kind of the point - to give people a little taste of what awful things are done in the elephants' territory, which motivates them to do something positive about it.

I hope that they let us drive through slower...They can lose Big/Little Red but they have to keep that music...

Does anyone have a download of that song?

Yoo, hoo-Calling Dan Murphy! I'm pretty sure he's the one who posted a link to that song a while back.

My girls loved the story line. We a fortunate to live close to and belong to an excellent zoo. They go to zoo camp every year and learn behind the scenes zoo keeping secrets. The story made it fun. However, I am sure we will not be dissapointed this is disney after all.

I have one and I can't remember for the life of me where I downloaded it. But if you (and anyone else) wants it you can PM me your email address and I will send it to you.

ETA: Just saw Simba's Mom's post. It must be the one Dan Murphy linked that I downloaded.

I think people are deluding themselves if they think that by removing the storyline, it will slow the ride down. They have to move a lot of people through that attraction every day. If anything, they'll probably use the removal of the storyline to make the ride quicker. I doubt anyone will get more quality picture time with the animals.

Im sure Disney isn't going to speed up the ride. They'll most likely just alter the area where you race through into something that you can drive through slowly and see more animals.

I hope they don't remove the "let's see what we can pick up on one of the local radio stations" bit. I love that music!
