December 26th was my 20th wedding anniversary. DH and I are in Florida for the holidays with my parents who live an hour from Mickey. They watched the kids for us that evening and we spent some time at the Contemporary.

We hung out for a while before heading up for a wonderful dinner at the California Grill. The whole place is looking so much better after long-overdue TLC. The main entrance still needs upgrading but once inside things are much improved. Check-in is just inside the entrance now, and the whole area has new paint and carpet. We noticed that the Pinocchio Christmas scene is no longer there -- it is up in the Concourse now.

We went up to the 2nd floor to see where we would check in for Cali Grill, and this area was loking very nice as well. New geometric-print carpet and paint in muted colors is everywhere. The area was rather deserted as I guess there are no conventions going on right after Christmas.

Next we headed up to the 4th floor Concourse. It was bustling with activity. The new arcade was very busy and the center gift shop -- which you enter at either end by walking under GIANT Mickey heads -- was full of shoppers. This central store has all the goodies that used to be in the shop where the arcade is now. Across the way, what used to be Bayview Gifts -- maybe it still is? -- looks about the same. This store has lots of clothing and a great line of kitchen stuff, and they have added a shiny candy counter that offered chocolates and fudge.

A nice CM explained that Chef Mickey's will soon expand sort of "sideways" toward the lounge, and the lounge and Concourse Steakhouse will go down in the basement level where the arcade used to be. Part of the existing lounge is now serving as the "grab and go" food area and this results in the whole center of the Concourse smelling like burning pizza. This quick-food place will ultimately be where the steakhouse is now, according to the Cast Member.

The most exciting thing for me was the HUGE building that is obviously Contemporary DVC. What a thrill to see a building that CLEARLY matches the artist rendering that was posted here "way back when" after some serious sleuthing on the Internet... The building is now a solid 3 stories tall, with huge cranes towering over it to build upward. It is definitely a crescent shape, with the inside of the curve facing the lake. My favorite thing to see was the pylons for what will be the walkway from the new building into the Concourse -- you can clearly see them! I did not realize that so much building would go on with no formal announcement, and seeing the poor woman at the DVC desk dodging repeated questions about "What is THAT?" was pretty funny. One man who came up got downright angry with her -- saying "Well how stupid is it to not tell people what that HUGE thing is when it is obviously RIGHT THERE?" The building is like the 500-pound gorilla that no one can discuss! I laughed and told that man all the details I heard HERE - -I said "Hey, I can talk about it; I don't work for Disney!" Later the DVC woman laughed that they had all been threatened that if they discussed it AT ALL they would be immediately terminated... DH and I found this kind of sad and commented to her that the hours spent at this DVC kiosk must be a real pain because you look like an idiot saying "Can't discuss it" when the new building is right there -- but they all rotate locations so no one sits at that desk all the time. She later said she felt DVC was about to "explode" because they are hiring tons of new reps and said we should all stock up on DVC logo merchandise as "The name is about to change" to DVC "worldwide" or DVC "global" (or something like that -- I remember it was a real mouthful) that represents the new focus of the club with locations ALL OVER. She also said the new logo had "no mountains." We'll see!

Being at the Contemporary was very exciting that evening. I really did feel like I was in "the middle of the action" and it will be very cool when they finally DO announce the project and share some details. We had a wonderful dinner at California Grill, with Holiday Wishes unfolding below us as we enjoyed dessert, and I thought about how wonderful it will be to stay there someday. We wondered just when this place would actually OPEN -- we figured about 2 years from now? Something special to look forward to!

Also, off topic, for those of you who have not yet seen the new Christmas lights on the Castle... It is beyond description, breathtaking. The lights seem to shimmer and it is more "glowing" than lit up. Make plans to visit WDW at holiday time and I assure you that those lights could beat the Scrooge out of anyone.

Happy New Year to everyone!

thanks for the update & happy anniversary:wizard:

:confused3 no mountains? mountains are symbolic both @ DL & WDW parks, mistake imo

I also love those mountains but who knows if it's even true? She mentioned a "world" or globe in the background, like I remember the WDW world logo from the 1970s...maybe the mountains are IN it?

Thanks for the great post. It seems that Disney should just go ahead and announce what the construction site is going to be. I sure feel sorry for anyone that has to man the DVC kiosk. I would have a hard time being polite with someone yelling at me.

Also want to wish you a Happy Anniversary

Rob

Happy Anniversary! 20 years of marriage is definitely something to be proud of! :goodvibes

Thanks for the post. I'm beyond thrilled about CRV (it's happening, I'm not even remotely skeptical) and love to hear what's going on over there!

Cheers!

Happy Anniversary! There is no better place than WDW to celebrate one.

Thanks for the report. I am still not completely convinced that CRV will be all DVC. I am hoping that it will. Interesting about the possible name change for DVC.

Thanks for the post! I'm so excited that maybe CRV will be a reality, I can't wait :cool1:

Thanks for the update- I wonder what all the new dvc plans are since they are going to change their logo? :confused3 popcorn::

I also feel really bad for all the dvc employees having to be put in that situation about not discussing the contemporary or being terminated. It should just be annouced to prevent unnecessary grief.

Thanks for the detailed post. We were at CR at the end of Nov. also checking out the updates and possible new DVC. All looked nice. My kids love CR so we always take a trip over to shop and hoping one day we can stay DVC there!!!!

I feel sorry for those DVC workers at CR who have to deny knowing anything about the HUGE structure out the window!!! :(

I'm interested in this name change that several posters and yourself have brought up. It seems to be the new best kept secret...

Yep, I heard the same thing and posted about it after my trip Dec 5 - 9.

A friend who is also a DVC member and I spent a week at BWV earlier this month. One of the things we talked about is do you think that DVC will saturate the market at some point? How much longer can they keep building and attracting new members? Especially with the housing market in a downturn right now and oil prices through the roof. They seem to have alot under construction right now. The resale market is busy. My friend easily sold most of her points last year (after 11 years owning) and bought an RV, a change in vacation lifestyle decision. Can DVC keep building and selling with the price of points over $100? Will they saturate the market? Interesting to discuss.

I suppose that it depends. I am sure that Disney has economists advising them on growth.

The housing market may not hurt them. If people feel that a new house is not in their future because they will not be able to sell their current home for what they would like to sell it for, a "second" home like DVC may appeal to them.

The economy may indeed affect the fate of the construction at the CR. If Disney does feel that they have saturated the market at WDW they may decide to make the new building a cash resort. Or they may decide mixed use.

Disney is also well aware that any economic downturn will only last so long.

It is an interesting discussion!

The reason it came up (we normally don't discuss DVC economics on vacation!) is we passed the construction on the boat from MK to FW. We were talking about why they haven't made an announcement, there's obviously something going up there. They are still selling SSR, they have a large construction at AKV that they are really just starting to sell (the new building), how would adding another large building at WDW affect the total point sales? Plus California, plus Hawaii. Can they effectively sell all of them at once? Is that why they are holding back an announcement?

I am convinced that this new building is DVC. I believe the reason that nothing has been announced/discussed is because this particular DVC will be extremely popular. I'm going to guess that it will sell out in record time. There are a lot of current DVC'ers who are waiting for this and the number of regular guests to the Contemporary that are not current DVC members will become members because of this.

Disney needs to finish selling SSR before CRV can be announced. As far as Hawaii DVC, that is going to be a very different market - probably west coast and asia markets. We'll just have to keep waiting... :)

I dont think they are anywhere even close to being saturated in the merket. Of course, I have no idea how much more they can grow, butif I was tothrowa number on anything I would guess they are around 50% of what they could be, at the most

I would generally think DVC helps even out slow times in the economy. I think thats why its even more attractive to Disney in the long run. maybe sales would slow down a bit, but current members would keep on coming down helping to keep occupany high.

I also think it will be dvc , at least partially, but the more I think about the arguement of SSR needing to sell out first, the less it makes sense

It makes no difference which DVC resort they sell or dont sell. If they wait on CRV until SSR is sold out, then they have CRV just sitting there not being sold.

if they sell CRV then CRV sells and SSR sits there.

it makes no difference, one will sit either way

but I would bet it takes LESS time for both to sellout if they announce CRV first. Once CRV is in, thats a pretty good draw for DVC overall.

I don't think SSR is as much a factor as AKV. If CRV was announced tomorrow, would they be able to sellout AKV? Considering the fact that the new AKV building will not be complete until 2009, which means contracts cannot close until then?

Congratulations on your Anniversary!....Thanks for the report, I'm celebrating my birthday on Saturday with dinner at the CG. We haven't eaten there since the '80's and I'm very much looking forward to the evening.
