Bicycle rental at Boardwalk

Hunh, the bike rules are interesting! That's one thing I do wish Disney allowed more of; biking between places and also walking between places. Probably restricted for traffic sake and liability?

Probably restricted for safety. The roads are very busy, there are no bike lanes, walking paths or sidewalks along the roads.

That's what I was pointing out; there are no bike lanes, or walking paths. It must be fore liability's sake and/or to make sure bus and car traffic is not slowed at all... They do have a long walking path for EPCOT and DHS if you are at BW, Y/B, Swolphin, a short path for Contempo, but it seems they don't want to connect anywhere else (for example, AK and AKL would seem an appropriate and neat place for a bike path and/or a walking path).

Where would you lock up bikes at DHS and the International Gateway? There aren't any bike racks there.
At the IG, there are lockers. I didn't know if they allowed chaining the bikes to something in that area, maybe right around the corner.

I recall lockers in a vestibule-type area at International Gateway. I believe they are inside the park, not outside the park. At any rate, that wouldn't help you with a bike. And I'm not sure what's going on over there with the gondola construction.

Ona different thread, I believe on the family board, a poster explained how they locked their stroller to a fence in the park and when they came back to their stroller from a ride security was there. He explained them that this was not allowed and, had they not returned, he would have had to break their chain and remove the stroller. I can imagine this would be the same for a bike on Disney property.

They don't allow bicycles on the roads because it would be like biking on the shoulder of a freeway. Loads of traffic, at highway speeds, and a fair number of the drivers are in unfamiliar rentals and are totally lost.

The walking paths around the resorts are not bike-friendly because they're full of pedestrians strolling, toddlers suddenly plunking down in the middle of the path, and people stopping to chat or take photos.

Right, I guess I should have phrased my reply differently; I wish Disney would indeed put in at least walking paths more places (such as between AKL and AK, and finish the walkway from GF to MK), and think it would have been neat to have a way to bicycle as well. I imagine there are reasons they cite as to why they won't/didn't put them in more places, such as liability and controlling traffic, and favoring buses and cars.

We love the Surrey Bikes! We rent them for 30 minutes and can do three laps in that amount of time. The two hills are a bit of a challenge, with the one by Swolphin being the hardest, but if you make a good run up to it and really bare down, you can make it up with just a little pain and suffering. The payoff, going down the other side really fast, is totally worth it. :-)

We try to do it earlyish (like, 10) so it's not too hot. It's a fun way to see the boardwalk. Our son sits in the front basket and rings the bell, which he loves to do, though he was a bit too big for that on a recent trip and so that's probably not in the cards for next time.

And when you're done, go to Ample Hills for ice cream. :-)

Florida laws regarding cycling are as in affect on Disney roads as they are anywhere else in the state. You are allowed to cycle in traffic lanes in Florida. You do not have to be in bike lanes. The only exception is for roads that are private and not open to the public.

For the rules you need to abide by while riding at Disney see this section of the Florida vehicle code. It is Title XXIII, Chapter 316, Section 2065 if anyone wants to poke around. Carry a copy of this with you and if you are told "you are not allowed to bike on this road" challenge whomever tells you that.

Fun to do. Would recommend you do it before walking in the parks all day. There are several “hills” (lol) on the bridges around the lakes.

I see families have the most fun doing it at night when it’s cooler. The boardwalk has a bit more people, bells are ringing and people enjoy the laugh. You’ll also find a few drunks trying to hitchhike for laughs.

Make sure everyone peddles!

I would not waste bringing your own bikes. The surrey bikes are fun to ride around the Board walk area. The roads are so busy, i would not want to ride a bike there.
Besides you can get enough exercise walking the parks you don't need to bike.

You don't want to wind up like the little kid that got hit by a Disney bus at Fort Wilderness while the kid was riding a bike. I think it was fatal. Biking at Disney other than right on the resort property just isn't a very safe thing to do.
