Beyond Recovery: Christin's journal of progress (comments welcome)

Sounds like you are doing great and it shouldn't be too hard to get that sugar tooth back under control.

Now the fudge situation. I am not sure it is sabotage or MIL trying to remind your DH how wonderful it is to go back home. Try your best to navigate around it.

I read that you were thinking of trying out Panera's. You really should. Everything is really good there and very fresh. I have never had a bad meal there. Just be careful, you will want to walk home with all the baked goods.

Have a great day and a good time at your convention. Nothing like literally flying across country. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Your descriptions of the food at MILs are hilarious! Carb and sugar landing. It sounds like you have done well in the land overflowing with white bread and honey. I think I would have dived into the brownies! I have to ask - does she have a weight issue?
I'm glad the focus was on how healthy you look. That makes the hard work so much more worth it!
Hope the conference goes well too.

I also think you have done well considering. Here's something to think about regarding those coconut bon bons - I like to have a piece of candy once in a while as long as I work it into my counts. So I got the bite sized almond joys and they are 80 calories, 4.5 fats, and 10 carbs but they have an almond in them. So it probably wasn't that bad that you had that coconut bon bon.

Have a great trip and a great conference and a good last day at your in-laws.

Keep on
Chris

You're doing a great job! I hope the rest of your visit and your onward travels have been fun!

I'm back!!! The conference was fantastic; I used to dread these type of "networking" opportunities, but it was actually fun this year. It's taken a few years, but I'm at the point now where I've created a network around myself and my scholarship. Tons of people recognized my name and wanted to get to know me; it was fairly exciting! Plus, I know I had added confidence this year from losing weight. I felt much better, and knew I looked better in what I was wearing. Not that what I look like should have anything to do with how smart I am, but...well, it was a confidence thing, and it definitely worked toward my benefit. Anyway, I should be set up well for the job market next year.

San Francisco was beautiful! The weather was such a nice change from Texas! So cool, I even wore jackets and sweaters! Unfortunately, I only saw the Union Square/Chinatown area since I was so busy with the conference. I tried to get to Fisherman's Wharf one evening, but my colleagues decided at the last minute that it would be too "touristy" and selected a "hip" Asian restaurant. It was fine, but I paid $20 for a meal I only half-way enjoyed and never got to see the Golden Gate bridge :( I get really irritated with this type of attitude....we were tourists, after all, so what is the big deal with seeing touristy type things? I did love walking up and down the hills, and got some exercise that way between my meetings.

I actually got back late Sun evening, and played catch-up all day yesterday. I'll be getting back to my writing today, and try to start catching up on everyone's journals.

Eating could have been better, but I think I did rather good within the situations I was given. I ate as many salads as I could for lunches and dinners. The Phonix airport is now my new favorite because they have California Pizza Kitchen salads to go in each terminal- I'm going to try to re-create their BBQ-chicken salad tomorrow night and will post the recipe if I recreate it well. I had Chinese food the first night; sesame chicken and potstickers...definitely not on plan, but I haven't had Chinese in months and we were in Chinatown, afterall. After dinner, we went shopping and I got a beautiful silk purse for going out at night.

Breakfasts were typically South Beach bars and an iced coffee, although twice I also got a spinach croissant at Starbucks and the last morning I got a yogurt parfait with fruit and granola. We went to a Mediterranian place twice, once for lunch (gyro sandwich) and once for dinner (grilled chicken sandwich). Unfortunately, I didn't actually get to eat that dinner until 10:30 at night because I was invited to a private party with the Governing Council of the conference (Go me!). Other than that, it was mostly salads with chicken on top.

The few slip-ups I remember- a bag of potato chips the second night, 1/2 a toffee brownie on an afternoon trip to Starbucks (the iced coffees kept me going through long sessions), and a Giradelli chocolate at the gift store while I was getting my DH some chocolates for a gift. (I also brought him back some sourdough bread).

I weighed in at Curves yesterday, and I'm up 2 lbs (205). I'm not going to let it derail me too much, however. I was traveling for over a week, and I have TOM right now. And, let us not forget the white bread and sugar extravaganza I had in Pennsylvania. So, I'm just going to ease back into my regular eating schedule and slowly pull it back down. I'm hoping it's mainly water retension.

TOM actually came 2 weeks late this month, and I was wondering if I was pregnant for a bit. To be honest, I'm a little disappointed...I kind of got used to the idea, even though it would have been a bit stressful since the due date would have been very close to my dissertation defense date. So, now I feel like I have to be responsible again and consider scheduling...which essentially means delaying a year. I know I need to finish what I started with this degree, but I'm just starting to have mixed feelings about how this is delaying the start of our family.

Anyway, that's the end of my traveling for a while. My next trip isn't until November (Toronto). So, back to the grind today with my eating and writing. We went to the grocery yesterday, so I should have plenty of healthy food to get me back on track. And, I'm going back to the pool today to swim laps...I definitely missed that while traveling.

Onward and Downward!

Welcome Home, Christin! :goodvibes

Sounds like you had a great trip. It is so cool that you are making a name for yourself across so many states. Remember not to forget us little guys when you make it big. ;)

I know you will get back on track with the eating, it will just take a few days and that weight will be back down again.

As far as the family thing. There is never a "right" time. It seems that there is always something going on, so you just have to decide when a better time is. Getting the degree finished is a big thing and it does get harder to do with a family in tow, I know. I have confidence that you will figure out how to schedule both.

Have a great day! ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Thanks for the welcome back!

I forgot to post Monday:
B- slice of sourdough toast w/ butter
L- 3/4's of a taco salad
S- 1/2 a giradelli square of chocolate
D- grilled sirlion steak and veggie orzo salad (yummy!) and a slice of sourdough w/ olive oil.
S- 1 square of chocolate and mint

I just got back from the pool, swimming laps, and a week off really gave my lungs a workout...guess I'll have to build back up. But I did get a great, if somewhat indirect, complement from the guy in the lane next to me who asked if I was in training for something specific. I guess he saw me pushing really hard to complete my laps and just assumed I was building up for something. It's making me think...once I come down another size or two, I would like to try a 5 K run, maybe eventually work up to a 1/2 marathon. Anyway, something to think about...

Sounds like you had a great conference!!!! I'm glad to hear that you ROCK!!!!!! Making those connections at your stage of the game is very important and that is awesome that you go to do that - especially the Governing Council - BRAVO!!!!!

Good for you for getting back on track. 2 pounds is NOT bad for the time you were gone and being around your sugar/bread family!!!!!! Keep up the good work.

Keep on
Chris

Tuesday-
B- handful of grapes and sourdough toast
L- left-over Greek orzo salad and a handful of chips (that DH had in the house while I was gone)
S- sugarfree fudgicle w/ PB
S- another Ghiradelli square (maybe bringing chocolate into the house again wasn't such a good idea).
D- I was tired and starving and didn't feel like cooking for myself since DH was at work, so I got some BBQ to go. Chicken breast and sausage, cole slaw and potato salad.
S- here's where I should have stopped. I had some popcorn once DH came home and another 1/2 a chocolate square. I was just so hungry today! Maybe because I was home all day?

Exercise- 40 min. swimming laps (my lungs were really feeling a week away from exercise, but I pushed through and finished my routine.)

Writing today- getting back to the chapter I left. I need to ease myself back into my writing so I can hit my end of summer deadline.

Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things today. The last two days I've just been exhausted...I think the conference took more out of me that I realized at the time.

Personally, I think you are doing well trying to get back on track. Maybe you feel hungry because your eating schedule was thrown off and trying to reestablish it takes time for your body to realize that it is getting all it needs, just not at those late times while you were away.

Great job on the swimming. Hope today is a productive writing day for you. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Wednesday-
B- piece of toast and some grapes (need to get back to eating some protein for breakfast)
L- 1 1/2 bratwurt sausages and some leftover veggie orzo salad
S- sugarfree fudgicle w/ PB
S- 2 handfuls of almonds
D- grilled BBQ chicken salad
S- 3 Ghiradelli squares (yep, the chocolate left the house today. DH took it to work with him so now it won't taunt me anymore. Other than this, I think I did pretty well today).

Curves 40 minutes, abs 5 minutes

Writing- put together the syllabus for the new class I'm teaching in the fall. Now, all I need to do is put together the reading list. I did this in lieu of my chapter because it was weighing in the back of my mind as something vague that I needed to get a handle on. Now, hopefully, I can focus my attention back on my chapter. Today, I'll reassess my deadlines and get back on track.

I'm still feeling really tired, and having more trouble getting up in the morning than I did before my trip. Still, I'll hit the library by 10:30 and get 4 hours in (including a break for lunch), and then come back home to swim laps before making dinner (Greek chicken kabobs- yum!).

I have been tired lately too. Maybe it is the crazy weather this summer. Maybe, I am just not getting enough sleep. ;)

Great job on getting rid of the chocolate.

Hope your writing day is a good one. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Thank you for visiting my journal! I have been reading some of your entries, I am getting some great ideas for meals! Your meals today sound very yummy! Keep up the great work!

I think you did exceptionally well for being out of town that long. Let me tell you if my MIL had put out 4 pieces of fudge, I would have eaten every one of them. (And I would definately consider that sabotage.)

I've stopped telling my family when I am dieting. I noticed the last 2 times I made the announcement, my mother baked a huge batch of M&M cookies. :rolleyes1

I have 2 conferences coming up in Sept and Oct. Both are in Las Vegas. I hope I can do as well as you did.

P.S.- Just curious what are you writing. I apologize if you have already answered this. But I'm new.

I was in Vegas last Nov. for a conference- it was wild! There are so many restaurant choices there, I'd think if you steer clear of the buffets, you'll be OK (buffet food tends to be pretty bland anyway).

I'm working on my dissertation for my PhD in theatre history/cultural studies. My research is primarily in the history of American stage design...the way some people critique paintings and what they say about the time period in which they were created, well, that's essentially what I do for stage settings.

Today was pretty frustrating, actually. I tried to get back into my chapter and immediately started editing what I had written before my trip. I'm just not pleased with my introduction. So, I gave up and went swimming, but while I was doing laps I think I figured out my revisions. Some people save their introductions for last, but it's really hard for me to write before I've clearly articulated my argument and laid out my "roadmap."

Thank goodness it's raining outside...my lawn was starting to wilt under the TX sun.

Of course, I'd planned to grill tonight (Greek chicken kabobs)...maybe it will be a short storm.

Later Gators!

Wow- it's still storming here! I think I'll go to the library closer to home today instead of the university- no need to battle traffic. People here treat rain like it's the end of the world!

Thursday-
B- leftover sausage and some grapes (this protein really helped me today...it cut down on my snacking and feeling hungry immensely. I know I need to get this in at breakfast, so I think I need to set this as a new challenge for myself)
L- last of the leftover orzo salad
S- no-fat iced coffee w/ Splenda (I can't believe this was my only snack today...oops, I did have 2 of DH's jelly beans while making dinner.)
D- Greek chicken kabobs, salad w/ feta cheese, and Greek salsa w/ whole wheat flatbread (Yummy! This was something I recreated from a restaurant in San Francisco, and it was so good! It's essentially a plate with olive oil for dipping and in the center a mixture of chopped cucumber, tomato, and green onions marinated in balsamic vinegar and topped with grated Parmesan or Romano cheese. I also sprinkled it with some Greek oregano.

Exercise- Swam laps 40 minutes (pool was crowded today!)

Writing goals for today- 2 am hours at library, home for lunch, and 3 pm hours before heading to Curves. Re-work my introduction so it's more readable, engaging my argument through example before spelling it out more clearly. Work hard to write the visual instead of just examining it.

BTW- whoever put these new smilies on the board is my new best friend
:dog: :dog2: :paw: :pug:

I'm so sorry it's taken me a week to drop by and officially welcome you home! Glad to hear your trip went well--sounds like you're really moving up and making an impact. That must feel so good!

Sounds like yesterday was a really good day for you! Great job!!!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! :sunny:

My hat is off to you on the dissertation! Sounds interesting. I think you deserve a trip to WDW when it is over :earsgirl: Maybe even a cruise because it sounds really stressful.

Keep up the good work on your eating plan and have a good weekend.

Your supper sounds yummy. Getting protein with your breakfast is a good goal. It is funny how we can come so far, yet there are so many things to still work on.

Good luck on the writing today. Could you send the storms this way? We aren't afraid to drive in the rain and really could use some. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

Your dinner sounds yummy! I have such a hard time getting ideas-these boards are great for that! Have a wonderful weekend and continue the great work! :Pinkbounc
