Beware

I hate spiders - I don't just hate them.. I HATE them! I think it's pretty much the only living thing in the world I'm scared of - I have zero fear of any other animal - that said..

One night I woke up from a dead sleep for no reason. The tv was on (we sleep with the tv on, don't ask  ) and I looked straight up to see a big old hairy spider with 2 inch fangs covered in blood (well, at that time of night it looked like that) hanging directly over my head off of a strand of web - maybe about 12 inches from my face.

My first impulse was to scream bloody freakin' murder. Luckily a rational wave came over me and thought - if I do that, I might scare the monster and he might fall off his little string right onto my face or worse yet, right into my mouth as I screeched.

So I did the logical thing. I scushed over in the bed about 24 inches until I had Matt unconsciously clinging to the edge(nothing wakes that man up) - and THEN I screamed bloody freaking murder (I take it back - THAT woke him up!)

I was right. I scared the beegeezes out of the spider and he fell on the bed.

MeanLaureen - calm and cool when scared to the edge of almost peeing her pants. I'm proud of myself :teeth: :teeth: ::yes::

Oh, and does this mean that PETA actually stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Arachnids? ;)

I can't believe we are referring to a spider as a poor defenseless being in a sense. I say be gone w/ them and snakes and bugs!! JMO!!!

I try to be humane and get the creepy crawlies out of the house in one piece. But, if they are too ugly, and no one else is around to save them, I do commit bugicide. We've had these nasty cricket looking intruders this year. Most of these, I am sorry to say, die. Anybody know the Jiminy crickets I speak of?

Frannn--not sure where you are located, but here in SE Mass, we have had a minor infestaion of the Eastern Conifer Bug. (aka the Stink Bug). They don't fly, they don't hop, they don't jump, all they do is crawl, v e r y s l o w l y. We scoop the little buggers up, and put them back outside.

I am a big time Girlie Girl when it comes to spiders. I have been known to vaccuum them up, and then utilize Use #487 for Duct Tape, and seal the wee little beastie in the vaccuum until DH comes home to empty it out. Sorry, I am also an inhumane Spider Killer!

I HATE spiders! I will get the flyswatter after them, if I can't find that I will put a plastic cup over the big ones and leave it for my husband to "empty" LOL he knows when he comes home from work and there is a cup upside down there is some sort of bug inside it! And reading these posts I feel like there is something crawling on my leg!! :scared:

I don't usually get a chance to kill spiders...my cats take care of them for me. BUT if I see one and the cats don't get it...I do!

Gotta admit--I Pumbarize them just l ike Marie.

If it's a creepie-crawlie that I did not invite in (Which means all of them), it will be invited out.

Thing is, it chooses the way in---I choose the way out.

spiders...ICK!! I'll probably have nightmares about them now
anyway...they don't live here either. DH gets them...if he isn't here....if I'm alone.....I vacuum them up using a long hose so I can keep my distance. Then I have to leave the vacuum running for a bit afterward cuz I'm afraid if I shut it off it'll crawl back out!! :crazy2:

Ewww!! I hate spiders!! Ick!! I would have given it a steam bath as well, Pum!!

Spiders are just nasty!! Thankfully my cat eats them before I see them!! :p

If they invade my home, they risk death. If my kids see it first, they will try and get it out, without touching it and without killing it.
If it gets past them and I see it, it's dead.

Here's another vote for Pumbarizing them! I live in an older neighborhood w/ lots of trees and such and get spiders and crickets inviting themselves into my house. The crickets I'll try to run back outside if the dog doesn't get them first. Spiders on the other hand are killed as fast as possible. Especially since 1) we do have a couple of types of poisonous spiders around here like black widows and 2) I'm allergic to spiders. Like Poohlovr said, they choose their way in, I choose their way out.

I, thank goodness, don't even get the chance to kill them anymore (but I would!). We built a home in the country so we have it sprayed inside and out on a regular basis!! Spiders and bugs don't stand a chance here! :bounce:

Good grief....why did I read this thread! I somehow believed that the only spiders in the US are not dangerous.

Now that I know about brown recluse spiders, I feel compelled to get rid of all spiders! Ugh! My skin is crawling right now!

I wouldn't worry too much about recluse unless you live in an area where they live: http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2061.html The brown recluse lives in a circumscribed area of the U.S. (the south central Midwest) with a few less common recluse species living in the more sparsely-populated southwest U.S. Nebraska south to Texas and eastward to southernmost Ohio and north-central Georgia.

Other things you should know about brown recluses:

* Most households with brown recluses never experience a bite
* 90% of all brown recluse bites heal without severe scarring.
* Many brown recluse bites cause just a little red mark that heals without event.
* Despite all the hoopla surrounding the brown recluse, there is still not one PROVEN death due to brown recluse bite. (No, wait, don't write me about someone who died and 'the doctor said' it from brown recluse! This information originates from two separate publications in medical journals written by two recluse venom experts who are medical doctors, who have been studying the medical implications of recluse bites for decades in Missouri and Tennessee where brown recluses occur frequently, and who know much more about the effects of recluse venom than your local doctor.

I hate spiders as well! Add me to the list of K~I~L~L~E~R~S!!! I found a sonic wave pest repeller at Home Depot that plugs into the wall outlet and ultrasonically repels spiders and all other types of bugs. Since I plugged it in I've only seen 2 spiders (in a year) and I think they were already in here! I have also started using a Pest Spray made by Ortho I think. I spray it along all the walls in the basement on the carpet and it helps keep those little suckers out of here as well.

I hate anything that is smaller than my kitty! They all creep me out! Fireflys, stink beetles, spiders, bees, mice, rats...eww they all creep me out!
