Beware Trails End

Exactly.

And then the whole thing must be connected to a specific food--was it the Split Pea and Ham soup? The pizza?? The Chicken Wings????

Seems like an odd place to eat two nights in a row

Seems like an odd thing to say! Last summer we ate the Trails End Take Away fried chicken dinner. We had a picnic outside on their veranda and it was delicious (and cheap :lmao:) The kids loved it and were begging to go back the next night again. We almost did but the bus to MK took so long to get to Music that when the DHS bus finally arrived we just took that one and had dinner on the Boardwalk instead.

OP I hope you and your child are feeling much better and have a fantastic vacation. :)

There is a really bad strain of norovirus in several states.
But please report so they can figure out if it could be food poisoning.

My DH and I got giardia (sp?) once. My doctor said simple virus, his said food poisoning.... tests were run and it was giardia. So if two doctors can be wrong, I am sure an EMT can be.

It is hard to say where these things come from, sorry this happened to your family! We had Salmonella (lab confirmed) years ago. Horrible, it last weeks, actually.

But, we have also had family members need IV fluids and even admitted to hospital for severe viruses as well.

feel better.

To note that food can sometimes cause similar symptoms without it being food poisoning at all.

To wit:

At Cracker Barrel they have something I think is called Sawmill Gravy. Tasty, but the two times I tried it I got VERY sick afterwards--my brother however eats gallons of the stuff w/o a problem whatsoever. As do many other patrons.

I think it must be some ingredient they use that for some reason doesn't sit well in MY stomach:)

And that could be the case with a few other food issues--some ingredient, or a food you aren't used to eating.

That sounds like an allergy you have to an ingredient. Allergic reactions can happen very fast and get quite severe. Also note, ERs see folks on a regular basis come in with allergic reactions to food who say they have never had allergies in their life.

It's also possible the OP had similar reactions to whatever they ate, and family members can share allergies.

As noted, an EMT cannot diagnose food poisoning. A hospital would need to do tests. Some stomach viruses have the described symptoms.

Did your daughter go to the hospital? If it was the food, there will be other cases.

I second this. If it was severe, or you suspect it's a public danger, get it documented. The public health office needs data to make connections.

OP, I am glad you are starting to recover. I HATE being sick, especially on vacation!

What nights did you eat at Trails End? How long after eating there did you get sick? Usually food poisoning follows a well-defined time line.

There is a really strenuous norovirus going around up here. People get sick at the drop of a hat and it hits like a ton of bricks. Both ends running at the same time, for several days. The small school (<500 students) where I teach had 65 kids on the absent list yesterday- most ill with noro-like symptoms. It's possible that you had that rather than food poisoning.

Last sept, my DH and I were so sick with some kind of bug. I don't remember when I was so sick. For about 12 hours it was horrible and then just bad for the next two days. We were so glad we had planned to stay a few extra days after the grandkids left. We hadn't planned on staying in the room for almost the whole three days. Since then we are been healthy the entire winter. Not sure if we even had a cold.

For our next trip in May, I just bought Clorox hand sanitizer. It is suppose to be a bit better for killing germs. At home we don't use any of this stuff, but at disney I feel I need to be a little extra safe.

Sorry you got sick on vacation, but it doesn't sound like norovirus. You only threw up 11x in 2 days, that's not that bad and not enough to cause dehydration necessitating EMS. When I had noro, I vomited 18x in 2 hours and had diarrhea over 40x in ONE DAY. I didn't call EMS, I'm a nurse and kept myself hydrated the best I could. Sounds like you had a mild stomach bug, I'd be reluctant to blame the restaurant and tarnish their reputation unless it was confirmed food poisoning (which it wasn't).

Agree.

Without any confirmation a restaurant could get a bad reputation for something they may not have had anything to do with...

Sorry you and your daughter were sick OP! It's awful to have something like that any time, but certainly while on vacation!

As others have said, I hope you let the resort staff know. Of course, without a test, there is no way to know whether it was food poisoning or viral, but I do agree that it could have been related to the buffet. I think a lot of illnesses from buffets are not caused by the food, but by the serving implements that every germy human touches (and we all know that many at WDW do not practice good hygiene). You could very well have picked up an intestinal virus from germs left on the pizza/pizza serving implement by another visitor.

We always wash or use sanitizer before visiting the buffet line to spare anyone our germs, and we always sanitize again at the table before touching our cutlery or food. Germaphobic? Maybe...but I'm a realist at WDW...lots of germy people who think nothing of sharing their "ick" and I need to take defensive measures :)

Hope you continue to improve!

We are here now and we ate at the trails end two nights in a row a couple of days ago, both myself and my 1.5 year old daughter came away with terrible diahrreah and vomitting. It was so intense I had to call 911 because I NEVER vomit but there was nothing left in me at all and I was losing my hearing from dehydration. I likely have thrown up 11 times in the last 2 days which is more than I have cumulatively in my entire life. We both couldn't keep anything down at all. The paramedic said it was likely food poisoning and I attribute it to the trails end which was where we are two nights ago and the night before that

What a strange title to your thread. If all the food (even one dish) was bad, don't you think there would be lots of people sick? :confused3
Sorry you were sick, but there are many things to 'catch' from all the crowds, also I'm sure you ate at other places on those two days.

We've eaten dinner there on many trips (it's also the same food as served at the Hoop De Doo) and have never gotten sick. Anything could have been your problem so would not be too quick to pick one place to blame.

What 'you' attribute it to is just your opinion and unfortunately, at this point, no way to prove or disprove it.

Hope the rest of your trip was better - no fun to be ill on vacation especially.

1) Sure, it "could" be Trails End.
2) BUT, no other reported incidents of which I am aware.
3) However, several others have reported the "nasties". *
4) My PERSONAL feeling is that it is not food, but the local virus going around.
[/I]

Agreed and I cannot believe that a paramedic would blame food poisoning.

Viruses are the #1 cause of this sort of thing and food poisoning is very rare in restaurants of the standard of WDW.

I have always been told by doctor, for food poisoning go back 48 hours. So ANYTHING you ate in 2 days could cause food poisoning. But honestly sounds more like a bug to me. Not that it couldn't have been, but to blame a place without knowing for sure :confused3

We like the trails end and its cheap we have eaten there many times and I really liked it. My daughter and I ate the pizza I think it was that as my other daughter and wife didn't eat it and were fine. That said the EMT didn't take me to the hospital as he said my vitals were normal and so didn't suggest that I go at that time. He thought it wasn't viral because I had no fever. I am feeling a bit better today thankfully, have kept down a few crackers, ginger ale and ice cubes. Haven't puked since yesterday afternoon so things are looking up

I hope you're feeling better now. It's horrible to get sick on vacation, but it adds insult to injury to be sick in the happiest place on earth.

I'm not saying it was or wasn't food poisoning, but I do think the EMT was out of his league diagnosing you with food poisoning on the spot. Did he really come out and tell you that, or did you suggest it, to which he said "could be"?

If he Dx'd you, I think the station he's out of needs to retrain their EMTs on what to say and what not to. It could lead to a lawsuit or worse: someone ignoring symptoms to leading something bigger because their EMT thought the ache or illness was minor.

Stay well, enjoy the rest of your trip, and remember: don't open your mouth in the pool, and wet ones are your best friend at those disney buffets. ;) Better yet, stay clear of the buffets - too many hands and breathing around the food.

Like the EMTs who decided that my uncle was only having heartburn instead of a heart attack? So they went to the hospital no lights, no sirens?

Instead of heartburn, but uncle had a 99% blockage of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. A 100% blockage is know as a "widow maker" heart attack.

They could have killed my uncle. Luckily, when they got to the hospital, the doctor knew right away what was happening and got my uncle into surgery. The doctor actually said that my uncle had about 5 minutes before there was nothing anyone could have done.

Yea, EMTs souldn't be diagnosing anything. That is not their jobs.

OP, so sorry you have been sick on vacation! FWIW, DH is pretty much a walking stomach virus. If there is one within 10 yards of him, he seems to catch it. Between him and six sons I have seen and experienced a boatload of stomach viruses in the past 30 years. None of us have EVER had a fever with a stomach virus. Seriously, your EMT was extremely ignorant in suggesting that and unqualified to say such a thing.

Because of DHs lack of immunity to stomach/intestinal bugs, we tend to avoid buffets like the plague. On rare occasion we will make Boma the exception and try to be there for the 4 pm seating so few if any people have been touching the utensils. One year while there, we saw a lady scoop up some mashed potatoes, take her finger and scrape off the spoon, lick her finger (thoroughly) and with said wet finger pick up the spoon for the next veggie...GROSS, but part of buffet life. Yes, I reported it.

Feel better!:)

Oddly enough several years ago 2 out of our party of 3 spent 2 days in the hospital after eating at Trails End. The next several days was spent in our room at WL.

The hospital wouldn't document or test for food illness and we got the feeling that they see a lot of people from vacation destinations in the area. There are legal and liability issues to consider.

One thing that we found as odd is that one of the first questions asked in the ER was if we had eaten turkey legs?

Agreed. I'll never understand why some people don't hesitate to tie up EMS resources over non life threatening issues.

Unless you actually had the tests done, then there is no way to know if it was food poisoning. The EMT can not diagnose it. Period. Telling Disney it happened won't mean a dang thing without those tests.

Agreed. Even though you there is a chance you could have food poisoning, please don't automatically blame it on one restaurant.

The CDC estimates that over 48 million people in the US gets sick from foodborne illness yearly. I would rather have someone report their illness because you know that the restaurant and Disney won't. Others may also have become ill and not reported it or called EMS, you will never know.

Not saying is "wasn't" Trails End...
But I know several people in my local area with the same symptoms. There is a nasty virus going around up north.

Yes, it is also going around the south. BTW, I also used to be an investigator for food borne illness with training from both CDC and FDA--almost all food severe food borne illness strikes 2-5 days AFTER eating the offending food (s), so it is very unlikely you caught anything at the restaurant.
