Beware of the Vendors!

We just got back yesterday, and I wanted to share this slightly disturbing story.

We'd seen those light up string things (I'm not sure what else to call it) for sale in MK before Spectromagic and at MGM before Fantasmic. The vendor at Fantasmic told me they were $16. We didn't buy one then, but DH thought they were really cool.

However, a couple of days later, DH was with 2 of the kids and I was with another at Epcot--so we weren't together. DH saw a vendor selling them from one of those small carts just on the Future World side (after crossing from World Showcase). He asked the CM working the cart how much, and she said $20. He bought it by giving her a $20 bill.

When I got back to the room that night, he told me the price was higher at Epcot than at MGM. And I, being the shopping guru in the family, said that was just not possible, that all Disney merchandise is the same price no matter which park it's in. He then turned the box over to see a Disney price tag of $15.02--which with tax would come out to the $16.00 I'd seen them for at Fantasmic. So the vendor CM had pocketed $4.00 over the price of the item! Now because this was one of those street vendor type of people, we had no receipt for the cash purchase.

I do have to give the Epcot people credit, however. I went to my resort (the Polynesian), talked to someone in the shop (after a front desk concierge person was very weird and somewhat rude in her response to me and didn't seem to believe that vendors on carts at the parks do not give receipts or allow you to charge your purchase to the room). The Boutiki CM was super helpful, spent several minutes on the phone with several people from Epcot she said, and gave me the difference in cash. She told me they were "looking into" what happened.

Obviously, there's either an untrained CM working a vending cart somewhere at Epcot, or there is or was a dishonest one who's pocking some extra cash here and there. My purpose for posting this is because you should always check the prices on the items you buy from those vendors who work out of an apron and take only cash payment.

Wow, I guess (but I never wanted to believe) even at WDW this could happen. I never pay to much attention to the vendors (just pay & run), but I will now. You right about the reciepts. I never got one from a walking vendor. Thanks for posting, Sbella

:sad2: to hear that, thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info. I hate hearing that there is dishonesty happening in the happiest place on earth.. I never buy anything from those venders but will warn the kids..

Thanks for the insite! I'll keep it in my mind and make sure that if I buy anything, I will get a receipt!

Actually, at those vendors who work out of an apron, you can only pay cash and they don't give receipts.

1) WOW.
2) Sorry it happened to you.
3) This is the first time I have ever heard of this.
4) Of course, I am sure unsavory CM's have tried this before.
5) Hopefully they catch the person.
6) Glad they made it right for you.

PS - Nice going to the savvy-shopper in noticing the price difference.

Thanks for the info! I will be sure to check the price on the item before I buy anything!

Are you talking about glow stick necklaces, are they $15? I sure hope not!

I buy tubes of them on ebay for like $10 for 100 of them. I buy a few tubes at a time and always have them on hand. We'll bring a tube with us, that should save a fortune! I'll share with kids around us and save others some $$, too!

No I think OP was talking about a handheld devise that when you hold the trigger down a string is pulled in a loop by some tires. You can move the string with your other hand to make cool shapes. Then there are 3 lights that make the string glow as well. And yes I do remember them being about $16 at the store in Epcot ( by gateway ) and at Fantasmic

thanks for the heads up... my kids are just plain suckers for those vendors... will make a mental note to do some checking before I hand over the dough!

Oh Good!
I was beginning to worry that things would be A LOT more expensive than I was planning for! LOL

Yes, this is right--they're called "String Thing" or something like that, and they have batteries to propel the string around. They're actually kind of cool in a silly sort of way.

Am I the only person who thinks that MAYBE the CM just made a mistake? Why does it have to be that the person was dishonest and pocketing your DH's $4?? I mean, it stinks that it happened and I'm glad that you were able to get your $4 back, but to say that the CM was stealing just seems a bit harsh.

Thanks for posting this! I don't usually check the price from vendors either, but you can be sure on my next trip I will!

Actually you can use credit at most of them now. They have an external CC machine. I was surprised to see this on my last trip!

Some of the light up things the vendors sell run $16.95 and $17.95. With tax, that would be close to $20. Perhaps the vendor made a mistake. Sorry to hear this happened to you, but I doubt very much that there are a number of vendor CMs pocketing money. It is always a good idea to check the price on anything you are purchasing.

If you read my entire original posting, you'll see this is what I said:

I don't know if the person was intentionally dishonest or just made a mistake because she got confused, but either way, we were overcharged. I know that many retail places lose lots from employees pilfering, and I'm not sure why Disney would be that different. There aren't that many items those vendors carry around with them, though, so it shouldn't be all that hard to keep the amounts straight.
