BEWARE: First Love Bug Sighting!

This always cracks me up people freaking out about the love bugs. They are so docile and wouldn't hurt a fly. My issue with them is that I sometimes confuse them with a wasp.

I've seen some up in Winter Park, about 30 mins north of the parks.

I'm one of those people who freak out... Stopped going to FL in Sept because of them. :) Those things are nasty. They don't hurt you but they are everywhere and stick to everything (worst was my hair... ewww....) I'll stick safely with late Oct. :goodvibes

Okay, those are just gross & creepy !!
Isn't there some type of insecticide they could spray to rid the area of these things?

OH I hope they're gone by October 2.

I HAAAAAAAATED these bugs when I was little. I didn't want to go outside.... they were SWARMING EVERYWHERE. It was a TOTAL nightmare. :scared1:

Do they make noises? I am not really scared of bugs but the buzzind sound some insects make drive me crazy, even if my DH does it i can't stand it.

Oh boy.....brings back buggy memories!

I used to travel to WDW in September (to celebrate my birthday) and I always seemed to be on the cusp of lovebug season. One year I arrived smack dab in the middle of it.

I remember watching a little girl in line...for something, can't remember, laughing because the bugs were playing leap frog.

Damn.....forgot about love bugs..... not gonna tell DW, won't she surprised, we have not had to deal with them since 2003 ;)

I live in Orlando, and I saw my first love bug today. Good luck driving and keep your mouth closed on BTMRR!

They are just a nusance we went one time early September and they were every where that year and the worst part anytime is if they do get on your clothes and you smash it is like getting trying to get ink out or clothing. The Mousekeeping would prop the door open to do the room and it would be full of them when we came back at nite so once we addressed that issue got better. Going in November this year so they should----be slowing down:worship:

Today was our last day in WDW and we saw the most Lovebugs today (we were at AK). There were a few earlier in the week but today was the worst. Nothing horrible but we noticed them...

I noticed them all over my car yesterday. (I live on the Gulf Coast in Alabama) They are normally here for just a few weeks. Hate those stupid things!

We had them here in the Atlanta area very briefly about 1-2 weeks ago. I mainly just notice them on sidewalks, etc.

I still haven't seen any yet. I'm just west of Disney (about 20 minutes door to gate) and work in Orlando, and I haven't seen any lovebugs yet.

I was there about 4 years ago during the really bad lovebug infestation, where you couldn't sit down anywhere without squashing a few dozen lovebugs. I'm hoping this season won't be even close to that bad (since I check in on Tuesday).

Why even squash them? You just wave your hand and they float elsewhere.

All the poor girl is trying to do is land on something. She has her boyfriend stuck to her in an uncomfortable manner, which is causing an unscheduled landing. As they float in very slowly at you, perform this elaborate procedure:

Step left or right. One step only.

Picture two houseflies when they couple. Notice they drop out of the air suddenly. With lovebugs, the girl is a big girl and is able to glide the two of them down for a crash landing... but she can't steer much, then she can't shake the dude after that. Instead you see a bug that won't fly much, that looks like two flies butt-to-butt and realize that it is two flies...

Pretty funny really. They have no natural predator because they taste like acid, they etch paint and aluminum because they're acidic, they are drawn to heat and car exhaust, they hatch, play tiddlywinks, lay eggs and die, and do this every 6 months or so. So really they were just engineered by turtle wax so that you would detail your car in the spring and fall.

OK, funny I just posted a thread asking about them, LOL!! I still think if the OP saw their first "1" today, they won't be bad. And flafun, if you haven't seen any yet they should be under control this season because I we had a cold winter. For some reason they're worse when the winters prior are warm. Don't remember where I heard that but it seems to hold true.

This time about a few yrs ago, they were swarming all over WDW and Orlando, it was plain nasty!! They covered the benches at the bus stops, you couldn't sit on them.

My dd was just terrified of them even when we went when they started to thin out. I couldn't believe the photos. The cast members had to rinse them off sides of the buildings with hoses they were so out of control. It was like the blob in tiny pieces so you can say "big deal"...but if you would have seen photos of them a few years ago, yes, it was a "big deal". They get in your hair and on your food, ick!:scared1:

What is the average season for them? September/October? Just more curious then anything else...can't be any worse then the blackflies and mosquitoes up in Northern Ontario or that one year with the aphids swarming and all the ladybugs everywhere to counter them. I still find dried ladybug corpses in little out-of-the-way places in the apartment....

There's a mild hatching in the late spring... April / May then the early fall lovefest in September / October.

Oh and they die off fast, so the seasons aren't too long.

Well what do you know...It IS Tough to be a Bug!
