Better than Visa Magic Code?

On flyertalk.com they have been using the code everywhere without problems. With it being an ID issue, they could ask for it anywhere.

I used the 773 code...it was the biggest savings for me. No questions asked whatsoever

Just a few things. Stumbled on this thread today and for some reason actually read the entire thing. I was shocked at how high the prices were. After reading I've decided to use the code, and no, I do not need verbal confirmation from National, WHICH ISN'T WORTH ANYTHING ANYWAY!

Two asides, that free bump up to the Executive Aisle is no longer available, which is a downer for me.

And two, not saying anyone here is fibbing, but the only "negative" stories about this code have been from people who talked to counter person, or someone on the phone, or my personal favorite, got stuck behind the unruly customer in line.

Meanwhile, people across the country have used the code without issue.

Ride it until its gone.

My cost?

10 days in September. Without the code- $416.

With the code (using "67") $191.

Yup.

Has anyone ever dropped their National rental off at the Car Care Center? And if so what is their shuttle service like? We are staying at the Poly before our cruise and I think this would be a great option for us, any tthoughts on this?

Thanks

I'm the poster who spoke about the "unruly customer in line". Just to clarify, I did not state it was related to this code. In fact, I think it is safe to assume that the person was not using the 67 code. If they had been using the 67 cide, National would be flagging all reservations with that code, not just one customer. The only reason I mentioned it was because I found it interesting that National does flag codes/coupons. I know they did it with a code a few years back but I have not heard oof it recently. I know that Avis definitely checks codes. And thank you for not implying that I was fibbing.;) I'm glad you got a great rate and hope you have a wonderful trip!

$124 for 8 days with an Impala in SJC using the code . . . no problems and the car got almost 30 MPG! A Chevy yet.

You're very right on that one. I remember probably 6 years ago there was a "USA" code, we booked a luxury with Avis, and then changed our rate to over double what we booked it at. It took a lot of effort to get them to honor the rate, I think it came down to the nice manager at MCO. After that, it is too much to worry about to use these questionable codes.

At least it doesn't present the insurance issues that the 57 and 67 codes do.

Hi,

I'm booked with the 57 code, can you tell me what the insurance issues are? I'm being lazy and was hoping to avoid having to look through 39 pages for the answer. :thumbsup2

I had a reservation for X-mas this year Dec 23-Jan3 for a van at over $550 I tried both 57 and 67 and now my cost is $249 and $348!! I'm going to use the 57 and see what happens.:confused3

Here's the scoop:
The 57 and 67 codes automatically add in all of the optional insurances at no extra cost. At first I thought, :cool1:  :woohoo:
But it could get complicated if you do have an accident and you didn't really qualify to use those codes, (You are supposed to be an employee of Travel Solutions to use the codes.) you could be held liable for the costs.
So then you think, "Well my credit card covers rental cars too." But they specifically say you must decline insurance from the rental company in order for them to cover you. Once you accept it, (and you don't have the option to reject it when using the codes), the cc company doesn't cover you.
Since I can get an Alamo rate $30 more, is it really worth the potential liability and headaches involved? Not really...
That's assuming I'm not lying in a hospital bed and could deal with it. I work in a trauma center (regional spinal cord center) and crap like this is the last thing these families need to have dumped on them. I've never had an accident on vac. but no one plans for stuff like this to happen.
Good luck to all who use it.

thanks ruadisneyfan2, so that means that my own auto insurance from home doesn't work either? We always decline the insurance and think that we will use our own insurance if we got into an accident. We've never thought to use a credit card's insurance. Do you have to decline the insurance in able to use your own auto policy?

so that means that my own auto insurance from home doesn't work either?
That's the part no one knows. We usually rely on our own auto insurance too but would they step in after the rental co insurance refused to cover you due to using a code you're not entitled to?

Do you have to decline the insurance in able to use your own auto policy?
People have gotten mixed answers from insurance people too.

I like discount codes too and will use just about any one I can find but when I have doubts about insurance coverage, it's just not worth it it me. My life is very full right now and vacation should be stress-free as possible, not a nightmare.
Many people are chancing it b/c they're getting such huge discounts. For our Sept trip (5 days and can use a small car) it's only a $30 savings. Not worth it to me for the potential headaches.

You would have to look at your own policy to answer that question.

My insurance will cover me in any car I reasonably believe I am authorized to drive. For example, if I steal a car, no coverage. In my opinion, if I rent a car, even using a code to which I am not entitled, I have a reasonable belief I am authorized to drive that car and would be covered by my auto policy. I would have to pay any deductible (which my CC would probably not pick up since I had not declined the coverage).

This is really no different than other Codes used from time to time where it is not clear you are authorized to use them. If you use a Costco code but are not a Costco member, you run a similar risk that your personal insurance will not provide coverage and then you will need to look entirely to your CC for coverage. That seems even more risky.

The answer, of course, is that the lowest risk is to only use codes which you are clearly entitled to use. -- Suzanne

Hmm. I'm booked under the Visa code with the free insurance coverages. I do have a Visa card. However the card I have on file with National is my Amex, so I didn't change it. Do you think I have to change it over to my Visa for the coverages to actually be in force?

Really.

I've read this entire thread, and sure, there are a handful of people that talked to National reps and said you must be an employee. But there are dozens of people that were told it is ok, you do not have to be an employee.

The fear-mongering here is out of control on this issue.

I don't see it as fear-mongering. I see it as giving advice as to possible risks so that each person can weigh the risk v. benefits for themselves.

As ruadisneyfan2 pointed out, she/he is saving only $30 with these codes and that its not enough to compensate her/him for the perceived risk. Others may save more or perceive the risk to be less and decide to use these or other codes. -- Suzanne

What does everyone mean about declining the insurance? When I signed up for Emerald Club I declined the insurance offered.
