I've had these mostly drafted for a while, and completely forgot I hadn't posted them! We arrived on Oct. 20 and departed Oct. 27. We were a party of 12 on free regular Disney Dining Plan.
POFQ Food Court -- This was the first and last place we ate on the trip, with lots of visits in between. I've never seen a Disney Resort food court that is so serene. There was absolutely zero chaos, and minimal noise and crowding even during the busiest times. We immediately staked out "our table" and it was always open and available every morning. With 12 people split into 3 rooms, it was great to have a meeting place to start the day. Food selection wasn't as extensive as I'm used to, but I'd gladly trade variety for quietness. Foods I tried were the Cajun Chicken Sandwich, which was on par with something from BK or Wendy's...not top of the line but definitely flavorful and satisfying. I also had some Mickey Waffle breakfasts which were yummy as always and prepared quickly. I enjoyed the beignets, but had to ask them to go easy on the powdered sugar because it made me cough. Other more particular bakery connoisseurs in my group reported that they were too sweet and dense.
Wolfgang Puck Express -- I ate here twice, the first time I had the Spicy Chicken Pizza, which was not at all spicy, but it was flavorful and fresh tasting. I enjoyed having cilantro on it, but my husband did not. The second time we split the Rotisserie Chicken, which we always enjoy and is one of those old reliable Disney meals. Service was good...they did run out of silverware during our second visit, but quickly got us some backup plastic utensils. This is one of our favorite DTD spots, and we will continue to come back.
Tamu Tamu Refreshments -- We knew we wanted our Dole Whip fix at AK, but didn't realize the only time we'd be in convenient proximity to Tamu Tamu would by 10 AM. My DH and I were the only ones up for rum that early in the morning. He got dark and I got coconut. I LOVED mine! It was so worth a little extra sleepiness
. The combination of tart pineapple and sweet coconut was amazing, and the rum was just what was needed to make it not TOO sweet, and completely refreshing. This will be a must for me on every visit to AK from now on. DH's dark rum Dole Whip was too strong for me, but he enjoyed it. I don't think he was as excited as I was about mine though. Go Team Coconut!
Flame Tree BBQ -- I've always wanted to eat here but never got around to it, so we made a point to get there on this trip. There was a long wait and the seating area was very crowded. I guess everyone was clued into how good the food is, 'cause it was pretty yummy! I had the pork sandwich with coleslaw, which was on par with what I'd expect from a Dickey's BBQ Pit or casual chain restaurant. Satisfying and tasty, but definitely Quick Service. Others in my group were RAVING about the ribs, so I had to try DH's, and WOW. They were just as good as something you might get in a specialty restaurant famous for fall-off-the-bone ribs! My mom would later report that FTB was better than half the TS restaurants she's been to at WDW. We will definitely eat here again, but I'll forgo the pork sandwich for the ribs!
Bongos -- This was our second time here, and I only went back because my mom LOVED the food last time and really wanted to go back. I also liked the food we had back in 2012, but not so much that I thought it warranted a dining credit this time. But, gotta make Mom happy, so to Bongos we went
. We couldn't get an ADR for 12, so we booked our group split and asked at check-in if they could try to get us together. Big mistake on our part, because instead of getting seated in the quiet back area where we were last time, we ended up right in the main dining area. It was LOUD. I'm talking flashbacks of nightclub bumping and grinding during college loud. It would have been great if I was out with my tipsy girlfriends ready for a dance party, but for a family with kids who wanted to chat and catch up, it was terrible. No one could hear anyone, so we just sat and wondered when the heck the band would take a break. The two five-year-olds we had with us had their hands over their ears the whole time and didn't eat anything. The food, however, was very good. We had the Cuban Tour, which we had last time, and really enjoyed the depth of flavors and how filling it is. The dipping sauces really make it special IMO...I dipped the plaintains in too, to make them more exciting. DH and I split an order and still didn't finish everything. Service was slow, and our waiter didn't pick up on the fact that we were all pretty miserable when not distracted from the noise by eating the yummy food, and that we wanted out of there. I ended up having to leave early by myself with DD, because she couldn't take the noise anymore. My mom wants to go back here again next time because she loves the food so much. I'm ready to be done with it for a while. I'd go back eventually with adults only, or with a guarantee that I'd be seated far, far, far away from the band!
Be Our Guest Lunch -- We were lucky enough to get a Fastpass and felt like rockstars getting escorted right through the doors while crowds of people were lined up in the hot sun. I thought it must be the best food ever if people are willing to wait like that for it! We had pre-ordered our meals, and that whole process went fine until right at the end when the receipt printer ran out of paper and they had to re-enter our orders. Then there was a whole bunch of confusion about whether we did or didn't get double charged dining credits. It turned out we didn't, but the discussion and research was enough to get me on edge right away. My turkey sandwich was good, better than most CS at MK, but definitely not worth waiting in a crazy long line for. DH felt the same about his steak sandwich, and DD ate a good amount of her grilled cheese and tomato soup. My mom and stepdad were not happy with the nicoise salad, and my stepdad commented on how odd it was that a "cold french fry" was used to top the salad. Atmosphere wise, I appreciated the details and the decor, but the layout felt very cafeteria like to me, and I just couldn't get past that and allow myself to be immersed in the ambiance. I'd probably eat here for lunch again, but only with a Fastpass or very short wait.
