Cast--Liz, Jason(DH), Neth(DS10), Brenne(DD4), mom(aka lala), dad(aka papa), Jimmie(DB32), Geoff(DB24), Brad(DBIL29), Rick(DBIL40)
August 19 Tuesday
I forgot to mention that last night upon returning to our resort, I bought everyone tickets for E-Night.
So, today we woke up and decided to be lazy. Jimmie and Geoff were going to head to Magic Kingdom, and the rest of us were going swimming in Stormalong Bay. We all suit up, gather the pool floats, and trek down. I have to admit, I feel a little weird carrying inflated pool toys through the lobby......
Once outside we show our room keys and get wristbands. Brenne and I head for the sand pool, which has a good sized sandbar sticking out into it for the kiddos to climb on and dig in. The pools are all sand bottomed, which feels nice, like you are at a temperature controlled beach. I wonder how they filter the water?
Jason and Neth head for the lazy river. Rick isn't down yet, and mom isn't swimming, so we ask her to keep an eye out for him. Brad offers to play with Brenne so I can hop into the river with my guys. I take him up on the offer. Neth is in a pool float, Jason is trying to climb into a kiddie float, I decide to just go with the flow. Jason brings Brenne in and puts her into a float, she is a little scared. I hold onto the tow rope and pull her around once, but then she wants out. In her words, "I hate this."
We go back to the sand pool. Jas and Neth go in search of the pirate ship, which also has the slide.
Rick finally shows up. He is still trying to catch up on missed work from the NYC blackout. Rick wandered around for a bit, the pool complex is huge, 3 and 1/2 acres, so it can take awhile to find people. Mom is just people watching.
Brad, Rick, Brenne, and I head over to the pirate ship. There is also a kiddie pool with a kiddie slide. I think, maybe Brenne will like this, but she won't go near it. She gets in the pool, but stays away from the slide. Jas and Neth come around and tell us we have to try the slide. It is the best!!!!! Brad goes to try it. Jas tries to talk Brenne into sliding, but she just screams.....
Brad comes back and says that we just have to try this slide. It is the best!!!! I decline because I don't have my earplugs in, then Brad and Jas tell me you don't go underwater when you emerge from the slide. The pool is shallow and you end up standing. I am hesitant. They keep telling me that I will be fine. (Note to self: trust your instincts.)
I go on up the stairs for the slide. I am a little scared. We are very high up....
It is my turn and I sit in the tunnel entry and propel myself forward with my arms. Then I cross my arms over my chest. I am going fast, in the dark....water sloshing about.....emerging into light......then getting drenched by the waterfalls they forgot to tell me about....finally at the end.....I am underwater.....up for air.....sputtering and mad.
I should know better than to trust my husband and his brother.....
Everyone is standing at the side of the pool smiling. "Did you like it?" Not exactly.
It would be better with earplugs!
I take Brenne back to the sand pool. Brad goes in the river.
Soon, Brad and Rick are in the sand pool too. Brad lets a little boy borrow a float, and that initiates a conversation with his father. Who is from Long Island. Who grew up in the neighborhood that Brad used to live in. Brad, Rick and this guy talk for a long time. Small world.
There is a CM at the sand pool on the sandbar who is leading the children in games, building sandcastles, treasure hunts, blowing bubbles, dancing, then he pulls out a squirt gun and chases them. I think this is so nice. Brenne wants to join in, but once she gets up there, she gets shy and backs away. Maybe next time. I think it is wonderful that Disney provides some supervised activities like this, the guy looks like he is having a blast too.
It is nearing lunch time, so we hop out. Brad motions to a pool waiter. We all look over the menu and order. Dad has been swimming and joins us.
What I remember is four pina coladas, some cheeseburgers and fries. I could be wrong....The pina coladas were good....
We moved over to some umbrella tables to eat. This is where the entertainment starts.
Killer squirrels. I am not kidding.
Here we are calmly eating, and squirrels are walking right up to us. Jumping on the table, snatching food. And they don't want the healthy stuff, like vegetables or pineapple. No. They want french fries! And they are going to get them one way or another. Jason is eating his food, and one of the squirrels jumps onto the chair, then onto the table. Jason hasn't noticed. He doesn't notice until the squirrel reaches into the french fry container! At which point Jason jumps about five feet, screams like a girl and pushes his chair towards the squirrel, as though the chair will save him from this horrible beast. I can still picture the little squirrel paw, like a tiny hand reaching forward.... I have tears in my eyes right now just thinking about it....
We also had birds swooping in to do the same thing. They wanted the fries!!!! Neth threw a fry on the ground thinking it would get them away from him, and it was like a scene from The Birds. They all swooped in and started fighting for it. Not pretty.
On a nicer note, from this point, we discovered a kiddie pool that Brenne played in, instead of eating.
Once we are done eating, I take Brenne upstairs to get her ready for Magic Kingdom. Brad and Rick follow us up, while Jason and my dad talk and take pictures. My dad was walking backwards, videotaping, and fell into the pool! He tried to keep the video camera above water, he really did try. The lifeguard jumped in to help him up, and all the people around the pool just watched with a look of disbelief. My husband fought to keep from laughing as my dad, underwater, held his hand aloft with the camera.....Dad was okay, but everything he had on him was soaked. Cell phone, digi camera, video camera, palm pilot.
Back up in the room, the two of them relate what happened. Now, even my dad was laughing about the situation. So don't think my husband a complete oaf (like I did)....My mom laughed about it too. I think I was the only one in the room who was in shock.
Dad tried drying out all of the electronics, with only the video camera not working again.
Guess what his Christmas gift will be this year!
After all the excitement we dried off, changed clothes and took off for the Magic Kingdom!!!!
