Best way to see Leaning Tower of Pisa?

We went to Florence by train and it stopped at Pisa on the way. We felt we managed to do quite a lot and still get back on the boat in good time for pirate fun with the kids so I would imagine Pisa to be very leisurely.

We took taxi to and from the station in Livorno after a couple of days using local buses and they were 25 euros. Or 20 from where the shuttle bus drops you in Livorno town (but you lose a bit of time). This was for 5 people.

We went last summer with our 3 boys. It was a quick "photo" stop for us and we explored around the area. Then we went to Lucca and biked around the city and along a few other coastal cities for lunch and true Italian charm. We booked an independent guide for Livorno and Rome through the same company. Tuscan Heart Tours. The owner is a local native to Livorno and was fantastic!

For what it's worth, we following Rick Steves, was off the ship at 7 AM and took a taxi to train station and spent the day first in Florence and then to Pisa.
Directions to the tower, in English, are prominently posted at the train station where you can buy round trip bus tickets.
Climbing the tower was a plus and I would recommend it. I think we had booked 3:15 PM.

Just got back from the Med and used Tuscany Bus. An FYI - they said on several occasions "there would be a person waiting at the shuttle bus stop with a sign who would walk you to the bus." Um, no. There were several of us standing around and no rep. Went into the TI and asked where to meet Tuscany Bus and was told "at the shuttle bus stop, same place your cruise ship shuttle stopped." Went back, kept waiting, it was 3 minutes until supposed departure and no bus. On a whim I walked to the right of the cafe down the street and found them about a block or so, almost had lost our slot as they let the pre-bookers board first, then they let the first come, first served, just showed up people on 2nd. (BTW there were only room for 4 just-show-ups on the bus so if you use them, def. reserve in advance). Also the bus was purple, not white, like the email said, and it did not say Tuscany Bus anywhere on it. (The lady said they were unusually busy and I guess they chartered a different bus. I did see other buses in Pisa that actually said Tuscany Bus, just not ours.) Also our bus did not have wifi on it even though they advertise that extensively. And finally they were almost 20 minutes late to pick us up and it was again in a bus that didn't have any kind of Tuscany Bus logo on it, another couple in our group just happened to recognize the driver. Soooo...they were worth the cost savings, but just know that you might have a few issues with them if using them in the highest of high seasons like we did mid-July.

We used a private company Rome in limo and loved it. We not only saw Pisa but also Lucca. It was a private tour just the 4 of us and it felt like we had met up with a family member who was showing us there home.
