In your experience what is the best way to land that interview?
And what type of job was you looking for?

I'm looking for an office related job (accounting), So should I mail resumes, look in the paper or use the old approach of walking in?

NETWORK - use your friends and business acquaintences to get leads. WRITE to promising companies. Look in the paper. Mail resumes. DO NOT WALK IN.

if you email/mail resumes, make sure you write a good cover letter. in my experience, a good cover letter makes a difference.

Work through a temp agency. I filled out an application on December 17th and had a job offered on December 23rd. The job starts in a week. It is a long term (9-12mo) at a major bank.

What I usually do is find some personal connection to the company, if possible. Either I really know someone, or someone I know is acquainted with someone big...

Then I send the resume and cover letter via the route described in the advertisement, but also send a copy to the personal connection with a post-it saying something like, "I heard about this opening and thought I would send you a copy of my resume. Please forward to the appropriate department (person, etc.) and I hope to hear from you soon...."

In the past I have landed interviews in EVERY CASE, and got the job twice.

I have this racket going on right now - no interview yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

In most cases I have found that it really helps to have connections.
