Best way to get from DL to Universal

East coaster family coming west this summer, as WDW vets we're excited to add DL to the mix. We've rented a house just across from DL for a trip next month and are planning to do one day at Universal. I'm guessing that driving is the best way to get there for our party of 6. Are there other options available? Can anyone give an estimate of travel time to arrive by 7:30 am? It's roughly 35 miles, but it's on the 5 and 101 which I understand can be intense.

Yes, the best way to get there is by car. There are other ways but that is the best. The time it takes depends on the day of the week, of course. Weekends with little traffic it might take an hour. I've never had to drive that on a weekday morning so can't help you there.

That time in the morning, you'll be ahead of rush hour around DL, and will be going the opposite of most traffic once you hit LA. The quickest it usually takes between the two is probably 45mins (I live by Universal). That said, I'd leave around 6 to account for any surprises.

Any bus routes from Disneyland to Universal? We are looking at the possibility of not renting a car and avoiding shuttles/taxis since we would need 2 carseats.

There's a city bus but it takes forever, and you'll have to transfer to the subway in downtown LA.
