I can't take anything I can put down or I will lose it. Also, my shoulders don't take any kind of sling or strap. We travel a lot and this is what I have found as the best system for me:
1. I bought a very small, pretty crocheted purse with a long strap that I wear to hold a travel wallet, passport (if needed) and phone. This never leaves my body if I am out of the country. My friend spent her last day in London at the US Embassy after her purse disappeared while she was sitting
next to it in the hotel lobby- I had already left for home- thank God the wonderful concierge gave her cab fare to get to the Embassy! Even in the airport here, it makes for quicker trips through security.
2. travel wallet (much smaller than my standard wallet with all the pictures, credit cards, checkbook, etc.) It has my driver's license, money, credit cards, insurance cards. Again, shortens getting through security without the risk of losing stuff.
3. A black lumbar pack (very large fanny pack) from Kelty. It has external straps to carry a rolled-up rain coat. It can be converted into an over-the-shoulder bag and has a handle to use as a handbag. It's pretty well rainproof. After while, I quit packing a purse entirely. If I am going somewhere nice, I take the tiny black purse. (That's why I didn't buy a passport holder- they're ugly).
This lumbar pack can take a hydration system like camelback. I freeze the pouch the night before and pop it in the pack. I have cold water all day, but sometimes I used to feel like a momma cow when the little ones would get a drink from my tube. As I said, I never put it down
