We are planning on a midweek visit to Galaxy's Edge in late April. My plan is to rope drop Smugglers Run and buy an LL for ROR as soon as we are in the park so hopefully an early morning return time. My question is once we have done these rides are we better to then leave Galaxy's Edge and return later for a good slow wander around and enjoy all it has to offer or just enjoy it then and there. Are the crowds in the general area worse at rope drop than later in the day. We have an 8 day stay at DL so we don't need to ride any other rides that day I am sort of putting this day aside to just visit Galaxy's Edge. We plan to have an early afternoon break and come back in the evening to enjoy the area at night as well but I am just not sure what is the best time to wander around with the smallest possible crowds.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a small crowd anymore tbh BUT I would suggest whenever there is a parade or fireworks, that's when most park goers are around Main Street and the Castle so the other lands and rides are emptier, not empty, but emptier.

I can only base my thoughts on GE at WDW. I would go early and stay there until it starts to really get crowded. We got there at rope drop, rode MFSR twice since there was no one there, ate a Ronto wrap, and then walked around for a few hours before our virtual boarding group was called. We didn’t go back in the evening which I wish we had done. We also didn’t do Oga’s back then because of the Delta variant. We’re planning to do both of those this summer at DLR.

I have found it much less crowded at night, especially later at night. Even during the day the only area that I have ever really felt crowded is around the ROtR loading area. I think the walkway is narrower in that area. The line for Smugglers Run can also be a lot shorter at night. I wouldn’t rope drop it even with a long stay. I would use that time to ride something else that rarely has short lines.

I would say at night. We were there during mid-winter break last week and wait times were always over 60 min. We had a LL for after 9:40 pm but by the time we hopped over after DCA closing so about 10 pm the wait showed 15 min. Not impressed with the ride glad I did not wait in line for it.
