Best time to buy new mattress?

Now that we've taken down all the baby gates, DH and I have had a few nights of a (very tall) 3-year-old daughter climbing into bed with us and have decided it's time to bite the bullet and upgrade to a king size. I haven't actually ever bought a bed before as an adult, but I know big ticket items usually have sale seasons. With Labor Day coming up, I was wondering if this is the right time to buy or if we'd be better off waiting for Black Friday and pre-Christmas sales (or even into next year).

Any other tips for getting a good deal on a new bed would be appreciated, as the mattress money is going to be coming out of money I had mentally earmarked for an Oct 2016 Disney trip.

Not what you asked, but we would quietly and firmly escort our children back to their own beds before a habit was established. Get the larger bed only if your old mattress needs replacement.

The Original Mattress Factory is known to always have the same price - no 'sales'. I liked that they have a mattress that can be flipped, many are cushioned on one side only.

BTW, I agree with Sadie22 about escorting your kids back to bed before it becomes too much of a habit.

Ikea has a good mattresses and reasonably priced

I believe it was Consumer Reports who said the cheapest times of year to buy a mattress are:

Memorial Weekend, 4th of July weekend, Presidents Day weekend and sometimes Labor Day weekend.

So keep an eye on the sales because you may have a chance to get one soon.

I wouldn't ever buy a spring mattress again. I bought a memory foam mattress on Amazon and have been very pleased.

Yup, the mistake that a lot of parents make with the first child. Second on children never even get the option.:cat:

I think you are in prime mattress buying time. Find a store with a huge selection you can lay on, and hopefully a well informed salesperson who just cares about matching you to the perfect mattress for you. A lot of stores here have a 30 day sleep on it and return it if you don't like it policy. We purchased 2 extra firm mattresses over the past 33 years, but last year the salesperson asked us to think about a softer mattress. Boy, what a difference, firm enough, but soooooooooo comfortable. King or Queen is personal choice, we're lost in a queen size, and feel like we're sleeping in different rooms in a hotel in a King size. And I'm 6' 2" and 270 pounds. But it has been 26 years since we allowed a child in our bed, and we never had more than a cat on the bed since. Of course with cats, you could have a bed the size of a football field and they would still sleep where they were in your way!:cat:

I got a hybrid memory foam/spring mattress and I'm in love with it! I've never slept so well!

We have a memory foam from sams or costco...can't remember which. Love it. It is a queen and we too are upgrading soon to a king. Plan to purchase from Sams/Costco again.

I know you didn't ask for child rearing advice, but we moved when DS was about that age, and he regressed in being able to sleep alone. We put his toddler mattress on the floor next to our bed, and let him sleep on that, but NOT our bed. Then, slowly, over the period of weeks, we moved it towards the door, out the door, down the hall, and finally into his own room. Sounds dumb, but it worked!

All of you deserve a good night's sleep :)!

Our kids were relegated to a sleeping bag if they wanted to sleep in our room. As with the above post you can move it out the the child's room. With the sleeping bag they were in the room, but not in our bed. Have to be careful in the morning NOT to step on them though!

I am looking for a new mattress too... hoping for some sales soon! FWIW,OP, we downsized last year from a king to a queen, which we had bought when our kids were little, and ds2 was a baby. I LOVED it. so comfortable, and yes,we could all fit and relax together. This ended some years ago(all the little people joining) but it was a special time in our lives, and 'to each their own' we enjoyed our times when we could all just relax in the 'big bed' and watch tv,or sleep,or talk.... :crowded:

My husband and I just bought a Tuft & Needle mattress about a month ago, and I'll never go back. No pushy salespeople, delivered right to your door, and cheaper than any other comparable product I saw in stores. T&N is also the highest-rated mattress on Amazon, which is what really sold me. Plus, if you don't like it, they'll find a place for you to donate it and refund you!

Keep in mind when you buy a Mattress the Warranty is covered by the store you buy it at.... Make sure you research how the store handles it as there are a LOT of stipulations some including stains void the warranty... you need a specific type of bed frame... and there can be huge shipping fees should you get past all of that...if you want to get the best price for an ok mattress buy one at Sams club or the like but do not expect it to last the warranty period... you may get 5-7 years out of it and truthfully that is around what you will expect to get out of most under 1,000 at the 50-60% off price. The person who mentioned doubled sided... Few companies make them and they come at a huge premium if you can find one....

Around here, mattresses are always on sale somewhere. I would just start shopping around. As far as the 3 year old, is she in a toddler bed or a regular bed? On DD's 2nd birthday she started climbing out of her crib. We converted her crib into a toddler bed. We knew we were in trouble when she said "Daddy's making a door in my bed". For the next three nights, she wound up in our bed. We then went and bought her a twin bed with a real mattress set. We put a bed rail up on the side (one side was against the wall). She could have easily gotten around the rail, but she never came into our room again. Turned out it was the fact that our REAL mattress was a whole lot more comfortable than a junky toddler mattress. Once she had a real mattress set of her own, her bed was comfortable enough that she didn't get up and try to get into ours.

Who ever collects on a mattress warranty? What is even the criteria to determine when the warranty becomes applicable?

I watch for the tent sales. Every so often our Mattress Discounters store puts a huge tent up in front of their store. Any old or damaged merchandise gets tossed into the tent. There may be scuff marks on the bottom or small tears and fraying, but the mattresses are still in perfect condition and deeply discounted because they want them outta there. I got two pillowtop queen Sealys dirt cheap. I know you can't flip them but you can change their direction and I LOOOOOVEEEE pillowtop.
