I just saw this information on one of the Travel Hacker blogs I follow and thought I'd share.

The Exact Official Best Times To Book Your Ticket

Finally, there’s a scientific answer to that magic number of days before a flight when tickets are at their cheapest:

Domestic US: 54 days before your flights
Europe: 151 days before your flight
Asia: 129 days before your flight
The Caribbean: 101 days before your flight
Mexico: 89 days before your flight
Latin America: 80 days before your flight

The numbers above are all based on a analysis performed by CheapAir:

Fifty-four days before takeoff is, on average, when domestic airline tickets are at their absolute lowest price. And if you don’t hit 54 days on the head, you should usually book between 104 to 29 days before your trip — within the “prime booking window” — for the lowest possible prices. In this window, ticket prices typically hover within $10 of the lowest price they’ll ever reach.

The folks at CheapAir spent the last year analyzing over four million airline trips. They tracked ticket prices from 320 days before takeoff all the way up until the day before, calculating precisely which day each one hit its lowest point.

Air travelers tend to believe they’ll find the lowest of low prices when they book “at the last minute.” This, according to all present data, is one hundred percent false. The researchers found that, on average, a ticket was at its highest price on the day before the flight. The second-highest price was two days before the flight, the third-highest was three days before… and so on, all the way to 13 days before the flight.

I don't believe that article, especially the statement that, Air travelers tend to believe they’ll find the lowest of low prices when they book “at the last minute.” It is nonsense; I think most people understand prices rise the closer to flight time.

Well I didn't personally duplicate the research that was done on the prices of 4 million flights to verify the accuracy. I also don't know what most people know or think. However, having spent a good amount of time over the last couple of years on frequent flier forums, travel forums etc. I can say that I have observed a good number of people who do not fly frequently and are newbies on these forums are under the impression that waiting until the last minute can get you a better price.

Thanks for this. I bought my Lima tickets 99 days ahead. I will recheck at 80 days to see if the price went down!! They seemed to plateau over the past 8 months. It certainly is a game sometimes to get a good international fare.
And a good route from my small hub.

Why? If your fare goes down, it costs so much to change a ticket that is is usually not cost effective to do so. May as well not torture yourself if the price drops.

I finally bought our tickets to Germany a few weeks ago (we're traveling in August) and I'm so glad I did. I see the ticket prices have gone up by $100 per person!

I now need to book a some train tickets, and after shopping around, I realized that its a lot better to book directly with the country's rail system vs. sites like "RailEurope". When I went to Deutche Bahn's official website, I found tickets from Berlin to Munich on First class that were less than half of what 2nd class was on Rail Europe.

Not sure what others have experienced....

I usually fly JetBlue. If an airfare goes down, they put the difference in your travel bank to use on your next trip

We love Jet Blue BUT we were looking at doing the Costa Rica trip at Christmas and the round trip for us from Burlington Vt. was $1600.00 a person.:faint: I wish they could bring back their original CEO for I believe the airline ran a lot better under his leadership....
