Best thing for dry skin?

I was getting good results with baby oil and now I'm reading it's bad for you. Eucerin? Aveeno? what's good?

Just a note on the two creams you mentioned in your post. My daughter (8) has ezcema and her skin drives her crazy, especially in our cold, snowy Canadian winters. We have used both products. She found that the Eucerin cream stung worse than the Aveeno. The poor child would scream when we put the Eucerin on. She usually has lots of scratches and sores from scratching herself. She doesn't find the Aveeno as bad. She is starting to go ahead and put it on herself rather than my having to hold her down to do it.

I second what pp have said about putting it on damp skin. Our allergy/asthma specialist and the gp said to put it on right after the bath on damp, not dry skin. It absorbs into the skin better.

Good luck.

As a PP has noted, coconut oil has been wonderful for me because I can apply it head to toe while in the shower. It has the consistency of wax and I break a piece out of the tub using a plastic knife and then place it in my hands and rub them together so that the oil can melt. I also use it on my scalp which can feel really dry in the winter. The natural anti fungal and anti bacterial properties are an added bonus. I towel off and don't have to apply lotion. Love it!

My dermatologist recommends Cetaphil applied immediately after bathing while skin is still damp. It makes my skin baby soft.

Agree but get cetaphil CREAM... It comes in a tube and is awesome! It isn't with the other lotions at some stores like Wal-Mart. it's in by the cold cream and cosmetics.

I love Shea butter. not lotion with shea butter but 100% hard shea butter. it's great.

What's wrong with Baby oil? I use it right after I get out of the shower. 55 years not a problem?

Oh supposedly it pulls vitamin E out of your skin or some dumb thing. Probably paranoia but... I had cancer and whatever caused it was something someone thought was safe at the time so I'm more paranoid this days.

My skin is super dry. I have tried everything and the only thing that works for my is Am-Lactin. I use it head to toe as soon as I get out of the shower. Otherwise my skin is itchy and flaky.

Amlactin works great but I hate the smell.

I get the worst dry and itchy skin in the winter and I have tried everything..even expensive organic oils that made me even itchier. As a last resort I tried Aveeno baby wash and it works AMAZING! I use it every time I take a shower and it is so rich that it keeps my skin soft and moisturized to the point where I don't need to lotion up after I get out of the shower. Now, I'm not sure if the regular aveeno wash works just as good, but the baby type is the one I have been using. Hope this helps!

Being from LA never had to worry about dry skin, but was younger also. The last 10 years or so I have used plain vaseline and massaged it all over my body (except face) after every shower. My body soaks it up like a sponge :lmao: I massage it into my feet, then put on cotton socks and my feet stay very soft. My Dr. told me to use that or olive oil - said both are very good, but vaseline seems to make my skin stay softer longer - never dry skin even in winter - very inexpensive too :goodvibes

I had two doctors tell me the best way to stop dry skin is to not shower/bathe in hot water, but lukewarm at best (incidentally, I also had a hairstylist tell me to stop washing my hair in hot water as it was damaging it). I resisted for a long time, but finally gave it a shot for a while. It stinks...but darned if it wasn't true. My skin dryness improved so much.

That being said, I couldn't take it for very long and went back to the hot water and just started slathering on the jar version of Eucerin. It's so thick I HAVE to put it on while my skin is still moist otherwise it's so heavy I can't spread it and end up using a ton. It's not as good as when I stopped using hot water, but it's my best compromise :)

I used Aveeno for years, but unfortunately it just didn't work very well for me.

I used to have terribly dry skin on my legs and feet. I tried every possible lotion. I got a humidifier and it has really made a huge difference for me. My skin is fine with just some regular lotion once a day.

Agree but get cetaphil CREAM... It comes in a tube and is awesome! It isn't with the other lotions at some stores like Wal-Mart. it's in by the cold cream and cosmetics.

Thank you! Will save me a lot of searching in the lotion area.

i just had surgery and one of the side efeects of the medicines they use to put you under is excess flaking of the skin (nice huh!). i have been latering myself in cocobutter by palmers

My dad uses Dove deep mosture body wash and i tried it a few times after swimming in my parents pool last year (bottle blonde, must rinse the hair or it WILL turn green!) and i was amazed at how soft and smooth my legs felt when i got out of the shower!

I will second cerave. Great stuff for face! Aquaphor for lips. My son with excema seems to need the cortison cream to get healed and then the Cerave cream works great on his arms.

Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water - hydrate yourself from the inside out. An aestetician at a spa once told me that any almost any moisturizer was good and that expensive doesn't necessarily equal better (I was shocked she didn't try to sell me some outrageously expensive product that they sold.) For my horribly dry, moisture deprived winter legs, she suggested olive oil dispensed from a spray bottle, lightly misted over, then rubbed into to the legs. It works wonders, is all natural and very inexpensive. The key is to use just a little bit - it goes a long way.

I like Olay In Shower lotion. You apply it just before getting out of the shower - do a light rinse. The first time you use it, your skin may feel a little heavy/lotioned. After that you will never notice it. Works great for me in the drying Michigan winters.

My husband was on a windsurfing trip with they guys and he called to find out what it was called as one of the guys was complaining about dry skin. The salt water was making it even worse. They made a trip to the drugstore on their vacation just to get some. ;)

I use it too. Must be a Michigan thing;). I have found that if I don't use it, after a couple of days I am scratching myself to death, my skin gets so dry.

Before bed I put Jergens lotion on my hands, legs, and elbows. That gives it a chance to sink in and go to work.

This is perhaps not budget friendly, but in my opinion, this works the best for me and I have recommended the same to many of my patients with excellent results (I am a physician).

L'Occitane 25% shea butter body cream and 20% shea butter hand cream. Although both are pricey, very little product is needed and containers allow you to use every last bit! The hand cream is the #1 selling hand cream in the world (one is purchased every 10 seconds). I literally wash my hands 100+ times a day and suffer from eczema. This stuff works! Available in L'Occitane stores, www.loccitane.com and Sephora. LOVE these two products!

I didnt read over all the posts, but want to say that I have 2 children with sever eczema in the winter months and we use Cetaphil. We have tried soooo many other things and this seems to be the only thing that has worked and it works for both of them and even me when I have a little break out.

Since you like using oil , choose a safe one that is not made from petroleum products. I buy Louana Coconut oil in the cooking oil section of Walmart or Meijers. A big container is only about $6. I use it for cooking since it is so mild and there isn't much coconut flavor.

It is a solid at temps below about 80 degrees. It makes a great skin conditioner. The last poster is correct - it is cheap and great for treating all kinds of skin ailments. Fill a small jar with it for the bathroom. You will love the way your skin and lips feel with it on and the smell is fantastic.

Winter is absolutely the worst for my dry, itchy skin. My mom always told me to use Eucerin, but I didn't believe her until I started working for their team. No I love using Eucerin Skin Calming Body Wash every day when I shower. it's the only thing that has helped my itchy, flaking skin and feels so smooth on my skin! Love it!

I have very dry skin but prefer to use body lotion in a pump, because I must use lotion over my whole body after every shower. The best moisturizer I've ever used is the Dove Cream Oil Lotion (in extra dry skin). I used to peel all over my body during the winter but since I started using it exclusively I haven't peeled at all. Make sure it's the cream oil kind though!

Choose a "safe" one not made from petroleum products?? Vaseline?? If it's good enough for my baby's bottom, it's good and safe enough for me, also my Dr. recommended it for my dry skin and it works great :confused3
