Got lab results today from DH's doctor. We've got to cut down on fat and cholesterol. We use way too much real butter and need to find a good tasting substitute. So, what do you like? :confused3

I like Smart Balance. They have several different formulas. The original kind works well in frying and baking also.

I use "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter". Got kinda cocky a while back and used real butter in some of my recipes and I swear the fake stuff tasted more like butter then the butter did!

We like the "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" spray. :thumbsup2 We don't even keep margarine or butter around now (unless it's time for Christmas baking).

Also, you could try cooking with healthier oils like olive or canola oil. Or even chicken or vegetable stock - gives flavor without the fat/calories.

Also, there are spreads like Smart Balance or Benecol that are supposed to improve cholesterol levels.

Good luck!

We love Smart Balance, and you can bake with it (doesn't get watery).

I really like Smart Balance. You will want something without any transfats because the transfats can be worse than the fat in butter.

The Brummel and Brown brand of spread. I believe it uses yogurt or something in the mixture. It's terrific!

Although, I will admit that we use regular butter now. My cholesterol is awesome, DH's could use some work. We only use it for cooking and baking, never for a topping.

We use the brummel and Brown too......it tastes like the real stuff and I cook with it too....

A third who LOVE the brummel and brown yogurt spread. That stuff is so good, and makes awesome grilled cheese!

You need one without transfats
I don't think that "I can't believe its not butter" falls into that category -but I may be wrong. Something that has unsaturated fats.
Its not only about lowering the bad cholesterol- its about raising the good.
Fleischmanns light with Olive Oil is what we use.

I did a double take because the first time I saw the thread title, I read "Beer tasting butter substitutes".

Sometimes I even scare myself. :bitelip:

We like Smart Balance (my FIL turned me on to it - he's got high cholesterol).

We use Promise Fat Free. I think only 5 calories per tablespoon with no fat.

I use it for steamed veggies and for cold sandwiches, but do not recommend it for anything else (i.e. baking, grilled cheese). It's way too watery.

We are in the same boat you are! I'm happy to say my DH brought his levels back down in two months.

We got rid of the real butter too. We like smart balance to cook and bake with. My DH likes Benecol but it is really expensive. My biggest surprise is we love I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. No fat. Good taste.

I also sneak ground flax seed into a lot of food now and when he wants a snack, he'll eat a bowl of cereal.

*Incredible* info you've all offered! :thumbsup2
