I'm thinking of getting 10yo DGS a tablet for his combo birthday/christmas present. He wants one he can use to watch videos, take pics, surf the internet(with parental discretion) and for reading(this is my main purpose). He is not a strong reader and I'm hoping if it's more 'fun' he might enjoy it more. Any suggestions that won't break the bank? Is this something I should wait until around T-day to buy to take advantage of BF sales?

We purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7" for our DD birthday present in September. DD loves it.
It retails for $199.

We bought it at sears so we could use the rewards points we received when buying a treadmill the month before. I pulled DS 7 aside and said, Listen this gift is from all of us, so don't listen to your sister when she tries to tell you that you did not give her anything on her birthday. :rotfl:

I think iPads are the way to go. They are announcing new iPads October 22. You should be able to get the older models at a lower price around that date, and more refurbished models should become available as well.

We got our kids the google nexus 7. It's half the price of an iPad. It has alot of the same apps the iPad offers.

I vote ipad or ipad mini. In fact the next ipads are expected to come out soon, lowering the price of the current iPads. Next week Target is offering a gift card with purchase of ipad mini.

Also would consider a Kindle Fire.

WOULD NOT consider a no-name cheap tablet. No sense spending $100 for it to crash/not work when you can spend $200 on a kindle fire that works!

Kindle Fire, Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy Tab - one of the new ones, Acer or an Asus.

If your family already has iPhones, then go with an ipad. Otherwise, I'd choose Android.

:worship:much to my dismay... my husband bought both our daughters.. 2 and 4 ipad minis.. but I have to say best idea ever!! because they cant get into the operating system and delete files like u can with a windows based tablet :)

I bought my son a Google Nexus last Christmas. It's nowhere as easy to navigate as an iPad and the charger port no longer charges without a lot of finessing. I really wish I'd gone with the iPad mini.

Our DS12 recently got a Samsung Tab 3 for his birthday (plus earned part of it by mowing the lawn this summer). He researched all of his options and in the end that's what he chose. We have an iPad but he wasn't interested in a mini.

He absolutely love it! We bought it at Best Buy but they price-matched a sale that Office Max was offering (20% off).

Good luck with your decision!

BTW ~ I suggest getting the service plan on it. Our son actually started with the Tab 2 in early August but cracked the screen a couple weeks later when he dropped it (hadn't gotten a case yet as his aunt was giving it to him as a gift but we hadn't seen her yet). Best Buy gave us credit to purchase a new one since we had purchased the service plan for it. I was so thankful that the salesperson recommended the service plan since it was a gift for a child (and he's a very careful child ~ you should have seen the tears when he dropped it!).

iPad mini. We got our kids Kindle Fire's but really weren't impressed. iPad's are the way to go in our opinion.
I feel the same. I have kindle fire, it is JUNK compared to the iPad. They screen cracks easily, much more easily than the iPad. It is slow, I can't stand how slow it is compared to apple products. My kids use it some, but we all prefer the apple products. They will last so much longer than anything else ,IMO. I would probably be willing to try the nexus or samsung, but can't speak on them. We do have a Nabi jr, I am surprisingly happy with it. They have larger nabis but they are kind of marketed to smaller kids so your son may be too old. I do love reading on an ereader(kindle). I do not like reading on a tablet very much.

The nabi Jr is a great tablet. A 12 year old wouldn't like kid mode, but parent mode would be fine.
