We're considering a split stay for our next trip. Is there an obvious "BEST" split stay option? We've gone to WDW twice and stayed at BLT and VGF (both for monorail convenience).

I don't think there's any one split that is "best" for everybody as everyone's preferences are different, but as others have said, a split between an Epcot resort and monorail resort is good if MK and Epcot/DHS are parks you frequent. That would give you the best of both worlds without a lot of travel time between the resort and park(s). I also think a MK area resort and AKL is a good split as AKL is a beautiful resort, but since it is out away from everything, it's quiet and serene, IMO.
We're doing a split stay for the first time this year. Well, we sort of did last year with POFQ the night before our Disney Cruise and then back to BCV for 9 more days after the cruise.
This year we're doing POR (to save some money) and then switching over to a 1 bedroom at OKW. Can't wait!
On our last trip we did a split stay between BLT and AKL Jambo. The location of BLT was fantastic, of course. There was always lots of hustle and bustle around Contempo Cafe, the monorail, and shops but we really enjoyed it. I was afraid I wouldn't like AKL because of its location. It was totally different than BLT in a good way. It was relaxing and peaceful. The lobby was stunning and the savannah was amazing! This is a split stay we will definitely do again!

To take it one step further, I would do a MK resort during the weekdays and an Epcot resort for the weekend. The MK is very crowded on the weekends and Epcot usually has extra magic hours on Friday night.

We usually start with POR and always stay at WL during our trips. For the remaining split we usually like to mix it up with one of the EPCOT resorts (Ususally BC or YC) and sometimes a monorail resort but we're pretty consistant with splits between the MK area resorts and EPCOT area resorts.
