Best Size/Resolution for Posting on Web

Could one of you guys help me with this. Photoshop Elements has a "saving for web" feature, but it doesn't get me to the best size for web viewing. The pictures are so pixelated that they look strange on the screen, unless they're huge. I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I can't figure it out. Thanks so much.

I tend to use 72 dpi with horizontal size no higher than 800 pix and height no more than 600 pix, compression: 10
