I did suggest an auction because the company I used to work for did this every year to raise money for a charity and did very well. What is a Chinese auction? Also what is a Tricky Tray?

A Tricky Tray and a Chinese Auction are the same thing.
People pay a price to get in and they also pay for tickets-we have regular, super and grand prizes. We pay for a couple of the bigger prizes, the rest we get through donations from companies and/or parents. Each class collects $5 per student(voluntary) and makes their own themed class basket such as "Going On a Road Trip" or "Backyard BBQ" or "Summer Fun" "Mexican Fiesta" etc etc. Those are regular prizes along with a myriad of other things including gift certificates for local restaurants and museum passes and those kinds of things.
There are around 250 or so regular baskets.
The raffle tickets for the super and grand prizes(which include Disney park hoppers, a money tree, Keurig coffeemakers, professional sports tickets, pricey handbags) are more money than the regular raffle tickets. There are about 20-30 of the bigger prizes.

We also have a big screen TV that is a separate ticket price and we do a 50/50 that night.
