I'm starting to think ahead to 2012. what would be the best route from Colorado or since we are looking at a 4 day trip both ways would it be better to just fly in and stay at a resort?

Thanks

JD

WOW! That would be a drive. I just mapped it in my travel software. It's 1835 miles one way from Denver. Not sure what part of CO you are in.

It routes you across I-70 to St Louis (It says stop by my house in Illinois and pick me up) Then I64 to I57 to I24- through Nashville and down to Chatanooga. Pick up I-75 and then head south until the turnpike to Orlando in Florida.

Since you're on the camping forum, are you considering bringing a camper. That's a lot of fuel. It would be $1400 in diesel for me to tow that far. I'd fly and enjoy one of the lovely on-site resorts and leave the camper at home. It's also 8 more days you could enjoy at WDW instead of on the road. If you would be driving a car, considering the $400 or so in fuel and the hotel rooms on the road, I'd say it would still be cheaper to fly.

Thanks for the reply, We have a Class A gasser and will be towing a dinghy. We basically did that same route last year to WV down to GA and back. We are east of Colorado Springs so I 70 is easy to get to. I was also thinking about taking I70 to I35 into Texas then east on I 10.

I would drive as long as you have the time, but I don't like hotels or motels either. I don't like sleeping in other peoples beds.

I know the drive will be long, but you can plan it out and make the vacation not just about the destination but also the journey. Try and plan a special stop each day, something everyone will remember. I am sure there are some nice RV parks along the way also where you can have fun at.

We have a 1200 mile drive one way to Florida but we make the most of it and so far nobody has been harmed. :thumbsup2

We also drove out to California a few years back to the outlaws for Christmas. It probably would have been cheaper to drive but my daughter still talks about some of the things we did and saw along the way.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Where would you intersect I-10? The full stretch through west Texas is a fairly tedious drive. Gets better the further east you go.

The "southern" route adds 100 miles and 2 hrs of driving but here is what it plotted.

I-70 east to Salina, KS
I-135 and I-35 to Dallas
Pick up I-20 east to Jackson, MS
Non-interstate over to Mobile where you pick up I-10
I-10 to I-75 then south to the turnpike and into Orlando.
1953 miles/29 hrs without stops.

I'm too cheap for that and I spend enough time towing to races all over the midwest and east. If your Class A gets 5 mpg, that's over $2800 in gas in todays prices. I'm cheap and enjoy my time AT the destination, not getting there. I enjoy flying, but it's had to get 2 racecars on a plane and for us, it's cheaper to tow the 5th wheel to WDW than flying and staying in a resort.

Sounds like you're somone that enjoys the travels. Go for it and enjoy. If you come through St. Louis, do pick me up!

Thanks for all the responses, our rig gets about 5-7mpg when towing the dinghy. I was thinking of going south because I was thinking of doing this in November and the silly reason is we need to get LA for our states map. :goodvibes. After our 3100 mile trip last August I vowed to never do more than 400 miles in a day lol. I have time to think this over maybe we can fly in and stay at SOG but I would rather have the MH for all the reasons stated. Well someday we won't be tied to jobs and can snowbird. Once again thanks all for the replies.

Snowbird. I want to be a snow bird. I would prefer taking the MH. My own bed, the dog can come and I can cook or not cook. I am hoping to go the end of Aug this year. We might fly money and time are the issue. Have a great time.

We are driving this way in May except from NM. For us the traveling is part of the adventure. WDW is just the highlight of the trip. We will be traveling for 10 days before getting to Disney. DH has estimated we will have driven over 4000 miles by the time our trip is over (not counting sightseeing). We are towing a pop up and get 17 mpg. May be eating a lot more beans when we get home. ;)

For your families sake you may want to wait until you get home, your pop up may become a pop out. :lmao:

We feel the same.

We headed south first when we drove out to California to get to warmer weather, then headed west. We left in November and wanted to get warm.

So true, at least the sides can flex.
