I have a teenage son who is very much interestested in cooking. (his favourite channel is the food network). Which restarant (at WDW) would be a good choice for a special birthday dinner? I was thinking of someplace where he could see the chef's in action... Thank You!:cake:

The counter at Jiko or Chef's Table at Victoria & Albert's

I would look at restaurants that have an open kitchen. Spoodles has one and you see the chef and his crew as they work - it is a bit loud but a lot of fun.

He may enjoy this - I recently read on this board that there is a food tour at AKL on certain days at 4 PM where you get to see and hear about their unique offerings.

Check with the AKL for details.

you can also sit at the counter at Flying Fish, and the sushi counter at CA Grill

Best picks for a real working kitchen in action are the following:

Spoodles - open kitchen in a busy, loud restaurant - lots to see and observe here.
Flying Fish Cafe at the Chef's Counter - best seats in the house, you can see the whole kitchen, upscale where Spoodles is more casual but busier.
California Grill - open kitchen, busy and upbeat.

Boma's...the chefs will come out and meet with the chef-in-training. Also, Jiko's. The chefs at the AKL are extremely accommodating.

Flying Fish or V&As if budget isn't a problem.
Both have not only truly world class food but it is not to thematic, there is a wide variety of culinary skills in use.
Many of the Disney resturants are really good and have kitchen views but thier food follows the theme of thier location too closely.
Chefs de France for example has items selected by world renowned chefs but they are truly French in origin.

Go early and very hungry to be able to sit through as many items as possible. We often raid each others plates if something someone else orders looks particularly good.

My son was going to college at Johnson and Wales in RI. We had a dinner at YSH and the chef cam out and sat with him for 45-60 minutes talking about what he can expect andthe different things a chef handles. he was great to my son but since then my son changed gears and is doing finacing and loves it. Good luck to your son, maybe he'll be a chef in one of the disney resorts :)

I think that the counter at Jiko would be a great choice, especially for your son to be able to learn about some unique spices/flavor combinations.

There are some really suggestions here. I think we will defintely be going to Boma or Jiko since they are so unique, and one other with an open kitchen. I guess it will depend if an ADR is available. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

One of the signature restaurants. The chef's table at V&A would probably be the most "educational," but it's expensive, and it's hard to get. CA Grill is good, and so is Jiko.
