I've been to DisneyWorld a couple times, off property, but this time we are going with Grandma, and she wants to stay on property to avoid driving to the parks.
So, what's a good place to stay? Something better than value hotels (double beds won't work for us? but still being budget conscious (no 2BR villa at the Grand Floridian please).
Will a hotel fit our needs? or should we focus on the DVC villas (we really want a refrigerator, but full kitchen isn't required)
It's 70 yr old Grandma, 2 moms and 5 kids (age 4-14)

You can either do a 2-bedroom DVC villa or two standard rooms. All rooms have mini-fridges, but the villa will offer you a full kitchen and a washer/dryer. The villa will also offer you more space with two bedrooms and a living room area. My vote would be for the villa as it offers more space and also guarantees you will be together. For standard rooms, connecting rooms is only a request. We love BCV, but if that isn't in the budget, consider SSR or OKW if available. You may also want to consider a 2-bedroom suite at the Dolphin. They typically price out less than one standard room at a WDW deluxe. I just booked a 2-bedroom suite at the Dolphin for the week before Christmas and it was $200 less per night than one room at GF. No washer/dryer or full kitchen, but the suites have refrigerators and the 2-bedroom has 3 full bathrooms.

It might be helpful to know which age children go with which mom, and how many SLEEPING surfaces you'll need/want (who can bed share?)

I'd actually price out 3 rooms at Pop. Grandma. Mom 1+ kids, Mom 2 +Kids in different rooms.

I was thinking the same thing.. we had the pop cars suite

This would be great. Depending on when you go, Pop is around $180+ each room. AS Movies would be about $160+ each room. Pop has the Skyliner.
Here is a web site on how much it cost to rent DVC. I'm guessing you would need 2 bedrooms, but not sure. I don't know how DVC counts children. Staying Sunday for 5 nts is the cheapest.

I figure each adult will sleep with a kid, or I will share a bed with Grandma (if it's a king). kids are little and can share sofabed if needed.

Dolphin 2BR sounds good, but is that a Disney resort? does it have buses to the parks?

A 2BR DVC would be awesome, but seems very expensive.

rent points from someone and try for a 2 bedroom at OKW,AK,Saratoga or Boardwalk. You have transportation to the resort from airport and back,to and from parks, and be together as a family in a decent sized room, with a full fridge, stove if you decide to eat in and dining table to sit and eat at,washer/dryer, rather than 3 separate tiny rooms,no stove, and a mini fridge barely big enough for can drinks .JMO

The Dolphin is a Marriott resort on WDW property. It is right next to Disney's Yacht Club and is in the Epcot resort area You can walk or boat to Epcot and walk, boat or Skyliner to DHS. There are buses to MK (currently dropping off at TTC, but you can walk to YC and take that bus) and buses to AK. The Dolphin typically offers resort "perks" such as s'mores kits and a swan boat ride. It's priced like a Disney mod, but in a Disney deluxe location.

I would do Saratoga Springs with that many people. Plus, it’s right by Disney Springs, so that opens up your dining options.
