Is it still with the cattle herd through the castle or can I break off left at bridge to Liberty square and take back path around castle?

1. Since there have been no changes in location, yes.

2. You can do that, but it is a longer route for no gained advantage.

So I take it the squeeze through the castle at RD with a double and a single stroller is not as stressful as it once was? Those pics and videos I've seen ssem pretty "unmagical" as a first Disney experience.

Lots of guests have the same idea in mind at rope drop.

We have ALWAYS gone through tomorrow land and gotten to FL ahead of a good chunk of those people bottlenecking at the castle.

The OP asked about the bridge to Liberty Square as a route to Peter Pan.

The bridge to Fantasyland (Teacups) would not be a good route to Peter Pan, of course.

There are two potential 'liberty square bridge" routes.

Once you go across the bridge you can take the immediate right on the path that takes you behind the castle next to Cinderella's drinking fountain. Then go left past Philharmagic and you're at PPF.

Or you could walk into liberty square and go right past Haunted Mansion.

Personally I believe that the quickest, easiest route would be to go left at the hub and onto the bridge towards Liberty Square then immediately right on the path to the back of the castle. This way you avoid the bumping and pushing at the castle.

But PPF's queue doesn't exactly fill up immediately so you don't have to get there ASAP like you have to for A&E or 7 dwarfs or Stitch.
