We purchased a Lenovo Yoga laptop for our DD (who is in college) in December. We have a product code for Office 2010 and had planned to install that. Well, her laptop has to have Office 2013 and the cost Microsoft has is $139. Is it possible to find it at a better price?

You can pay by month for $9.99. This would be a good option IMO. You can also use it on I think up to 3 computers so you could use it home too. Then you could just cancel the membership when need be.

When you say you have a product code for Office 2010, was that pre installed on another computer / activated from the pre installed software or is that from a retail packaged version with the install DVD?

If you have the retail version with an install DVD, just uninstall 2013 and install 2010 using the code from the retail package.

If your code was from the previous laptop and the software came with the laptop or the code was activated from preinstalled software it is likely a a version of office tied to that one computer and cannot be transferred.

$139 for Office 2013 student is about the best I see on the web.

You can get a Keycode for Office 2010 (no media) for $99 then you can download the install from Microsoft.

Finally if you want to try it, download the office 2010 Media from Microsoft, uninstall the 2013 from the current laptop and see if your office 2010 will activate with your keycode.

To Download the 2010 install goto: office . com / downloadoffice (Remove the spaces)

Check to see if she is eligible for a student discount through her university. It will depend on the school she attends, but some schools get awesome discounts for the software. My older son is studying IT and Microsoft actually gives them their software for free.

You can have her check pricing for her school here:

Is it the school requiring 2013? If not, you should be able to install 2010. I installed it on our desktop running Windows 8.1.

As PPs have said, check with her school about discount pricing. Also, what field is she studying? Some schools have agreements with Microsoft that are better if you're in Computer Science or Engineering.

Best prices will be the student discount (you just need a .edu email address) or through work if you work participates in the Microsoft Home Use program.

Another place to check would be OnTheHub.com

They have fewer participating schools but the ones that do get steep discounts, in fact the software can be completely free in many cases.

Like previous people said, see if she can get discount through her school.

I'm currently in college and I was able to get the Microsoft Office 365 University through Best Buy, I got it free with a purchase of a laptop. But I know they also sell them for about $80. It comes with a 4 year subscription and you can use it for 2 PCs or Macs.

Go here: http://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/h...&ClickID=arzk0svy9a0nanpn5lktzv9r5vyazkznnslk (this is Microsoft's Home Use program website).

Enter your work or DDs school email address to see if you qualify for a cheap home license. If your company has the correct licensing, you should be able to get a complete home version of Office 2013 for just $10 - my work email address qualified. I believe it will also work if the university has the right agreement, although I am not 100% positive (people on Slickdeal's have reported that .edu email addresses have worked in the past).

Have her check her schools website. I go to the University at Buffalo and all students get a free download of Office. Also free downloads of other necessary programs including anti virus. The fees we pay for school pay for the software so def have her check on that.

The laptop doesn't necessarily need 2013. You can get a student version of 2013 very cheap in some cases around $10.

Don't pay $79!

You don''t need Office anyways. You can do everything through FREE Google drive.
