Best place to stay in NY day before cruise?

Does it matter where we stay in NY the day before the cruise? Should we be closer to the port (which may be in Manhattan, I have to check) or stay wherever? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Go to cruisecritic.com., east coast departures board. No need to be close to the port, you can just take a taxi. Get at least a 3 star hotel, because anything less can be scary!

as a city girl i would say it depends on what you are hauling. if you only plan on taking a taxi consider the time it will take you to get to the port vs the money spent on a taxi. for ex. it may not be worth it to save some money to stay further away if it will cost you a lot more time and money on a taxi. if you have a small bag each you can stay downtown because you can hop on a subway and may be able to get there quickly and cheaply.
