Hi Friends:

Our 8 y/o dd now needs glasses. Please let me know your thoughts as to places with the best pricing or coolest selection for kids.

We reside in MD, but would visit VA or DC in an effort to reduce the cost and potential trauma of this new experience.

Thanks in advance,

:thumbsup2 we live in the midwest but searched our town up and down for styles and deals.....took along the digtal camera to take pic's of dd12....her first pair this past fall and ended up at Sears. they had the best price and guarntee. good luck !! :coffee:

We just did Eyemasters for my DS14. They had a great selection, although he complained about each an every 50+ pair he tried on. I love having a teenager!!

Our Eyemasters here in TX is offering 2 pair for $99.

When my DS was that age, we used WalMart b/c they were open 9-9 and even on Sunday afternoon. It seemed that any time he had a problem it was after hours! The price was also good.

when i lived in montana i worked for national vision ( great prices) now we are back in georgia i work for a pearle vision.. i know they are all own by different people but my pearle vision is expensive

Another vote for WalMart Vision Center. They have some stylish frames, and I believe they offer a cheap package for kids.

We did Wal Mart too. They ran a Buy one, get one free deal at that time. We have one pair at school and one pair at home. :thumbsup2

When I was first told I had to wear glasses (age 12), my parents brought me to a place and said just to pickout whatever I wanted. Of course I looked at the cheapest ones, but my dad said you will be wearing these every day - make sure you LOVE them. They found a way to cut back other things to help pay for the glasses. To this day I still pick out the frames I love (regular and sunglasses) and look at the price after. We always find a way to pay for them. As a kid it was hard enough wearing the damn things - at least my folks took into consideration my feelings. If my dd needs glasses, I'll do the same with her.

Just got DD7 her second round of glasses. We went to Doctor's VisionWorks (we are in Georgia.)

They offer 2 pairs for $99 (for kids, this includes polycarbonate lenses, which can be pricey but are just about mandatory for kiddos.) The frames they offer for the special are stylish (metal frames with spring hinges, etc.) I did not purchase the insurance on Saturday (since she had lost three pairs in 0 months) and DD had (with the help of two classmates) destroyed the first pair the following Wednesday!!

We went back and they got them back into shape and then discovered they were mis-fitted. So, they gave her two new pairs (did not charge me to upgrade to the twisty-bendy frames, since that was the type that fit her best) and I GLADLY plunked down $66 for insurance and went on my way.

They were very nice about the whole thing.

Have you asked your opthalmologist for any ideas?

My 8yo dd has been wearing glasses most of her life, and we always buy them at a little local shop that specializes in children's eyewear. Unfortunately, we are far from you, so I can't recommend them for you, but our pediatric opthalmologist recommended them, and I doubt I'd have found them otherwise. They have a bigger selection of kids frames than any of the regular eyeglass shops in my area.

Ask your doc if they know of any shops specializing in children's eyewear. Good luck!

another thing is before you buy them from anywhere find out what the warranty is, how much the warranty itself will cost you and find out if something does brake and you use the warranty if it will cost anything more

one place sells you the warranty for $25.00 and then when you need to use the "warranty" they still charge you another 30% of the cost

Another vote for Walmart(I'm up in Canada)
They were the cheapest and last time DS broke a pair they gave us the fame
free.(I think we are there best costumer)
My DS is 11 and goes throught them pretty fast aleast one pair every 6 to 8 months I have no health plan so I need to buy them myself.
He also wears contacts.
He does'mt care about the style to much and I would rather pay less than 40 every few months and not have to freak out so much. This way we also have about 2 pairs at the same time.

I live in No. Virginia and we have a chain of stores here called "ForEyes". The prices are pretty good - 2 for $99 and a good selection of frames for kids. Both my dd's wear glasses and have gotten some nice frames at ForEyes. Also, there have been some 'mishaps' at school or during soccer where the poor kids got hit by a ball and the frames got bent a little. ForEyes fixed them for free. They've always been nice and helpful there.

Good luck! :sunny:

Another vote for Wal-Mart here!! :thumbsup2

We just got glasses and contacts for DD11 there and she was really happy with the whole process. The staff took their time with her picking things out and never put us under any pressure while we were looking. They gave us all of the pricing right up front so there were no surprises ~ I highly recommend them!! :)

Another vote for Walmart here...I got mine, DS, and DD there. Great value, great service, and warranty is excellent. They have been great to all of us!
