Best Pie?

Is a key lime pie an actual pie? To me a pie has to be enclosed in pastry (shortcrust, puff, filo) top and bottom. If it is enclosed in suet or made with suet, then it’s a pudding. If it has only pastry on the base and sides, it is a tart. Cake doesn’t have any pastry, so includes things like cheesecake because the base is made of crumbs rather than pastry.
The only dessert pie that I know of that isn't pie is Boston Cream Pie which is cake with pudding between the two layers of chocolate cake and chocolate ganache poured on top.

I don’t have a sweet tooth, so I am definitely not an expert, but I think that in the U.K. we like our pies to be appropriately dressed and covered with pastry on top, whereas a tart can be naked.

What about cottage pie? Or Shepherds pie?

Pie alert from the Fountain Vs Beaches & Cream thread:

"I adore the fountain and prefer it. My favorite dessert was always the caramel apple pie sundae
slice of pie w soft serve vanilla and caramel. So good! I love they have both soft serve and hard serve ice cream"

The Fountain is a table service restaurant in the Dolphin hotel. From what I've read, the Swan and Dolphin have their own app which lists hours of operation for their restaurants.

You are right. I am wrong.

Sorry. There was supposed to be a smiley face there (I still can never remember the difference between those two dishes anyway).

I don't make your distinction, but can totally see why one might (or why a nation might). For no good reason, I tend to think of tarts as having a non-pastry/non-standard pastry bottom (like cookie/biscuit crumbs or shortbread). But, the aforementioned banoffee pie (so good) has a biscuit crust and it is call pie.

And, while we are at it, why is it a graham cracker and not a graham cookie?

I got the smiley face. Graham crackers really unknown in U.K. My daughter did Camp America for a few years and so knows s’mores but I am planning to try them for the first time at the UOR steak place when we next visit.

Yes, I usually swap crushed digestives and graham cracker crumbs as needed (currently live in Switzerland, but McVite biscuits are easy to get whereas I have to bring graham crackers from home). Not exactly the same, but works (and, when at home, I sometimes used graham cracker crumbs when using British/Australian recipes that called for crushed digestives).

Yup, there's a whole slice of pie in there.

A tart is made in a tart pan. A pie is made in a pie pan.

A tart pan has a removable bottom from its sides.

While a key lime pie can be made as a tart, if it is made in a pie pan then it is a pie.

Pumpkin pie is a also a pie because it is is made in a pie pan and also doesn't have an upper pastry crust.

We can also go into other examples of pies without upper pastry crusts. Pecan pie, lemon meringue pie etc.

In regards to "pudding", Puddings in the US are more similar to the French mouse's and are a dessert not a savory.

In regards to cheesecake IMHO they are in their own category, and they may not always have a crumb crust. For example Junior's cheesecake out of New York City has a "cake" crust on the bottom. I have made it myself and have it at the "mother ship". The filling is definitely a heavy cheesecake, but the bottom crust is not the "traditional" crumb crust. Do I still consider a cheesecakes. Yes.

Am I the only one who was hoping this thread was a poll where I could vote "D. All of the Above"?:)

I'm feeling a little dessert deprived right now, so pie, tart, and sundaes all sound good.
