Best painless "stretching things" budget tips?

:drinking1 This tip is for the BUDGET stretching (and) WEIGHT minimizing crew :cool1:

I am a wine lover. I love red wine. I love white wine. I love expensive wine. I love champagne. And I love BOXED wine :rotfl2:

Boxes of wine run about $10 and they equal 4 BOTTLES OF WINE I am the only one drinking the wine most weeks so the box actually stops oxidization and lets me enjoy the wine at my pace instead of slamming it so it doesn't get wasted - like I would be :drinking1

If you want to stretch your dollar till it squeeks (and stop your scale from screaming)......add sprite zero to that boxed wine :cool1: and double your glasses per box with half the calories!

I've been dying to try boxed wine, but I need to know what's GOOD boxed wine. I would hate to be stuck with a month's supply of wine I hate, and have to throw it all out! :) So please give me some recommendations!:flower3:

Target has GREAT boxed wines. The nice thing about them is they also sell mini boxes equalling 2 bottles (less risk to try out). Their Pino's have won lots of awards. I also like Black Box brand (a little pricier) and on the low end Corbet Canyon is really good and winning all kinds of awards

We love the Banrock Station (Australia) boxed wines. They are $14.99 a box (4 bottle size). The reds, whites, and blush are all yummy! I'll have to pursue the Sprite Zero tip, too!

The best thing I like about the boxed wines is that we always have some to cook with. Before we made the switchover to boxes, I HATED to open a bottle of wine (even of cheap stuff) to add to sauces, etc. You usually don't need much, but then we never managed to finish the bottle and it seemed like such a waste. Now, we've always got at least one box of red and one box of white on hand, so it's much easier and cheaper to pour some into my cooking...

NEVER MANAGED TO FINISH THE BOTTLE:scared1: That would never happen on our house with a bunch of Italians and Germans. :rotfl2: I like the Vella brand of Merlot, if you happen to like dry wine. If I am going to open a bottle it usually is Pino Noir. :thumbsup2

Chicklogic - You have inspired me to try boxed wine. :cutie: I love all sorts reds and whites though I tend to lean a little towards red and definitely don't like a lot of oak in mine. I'll check out the Target this weekend and get the Sprite Zero. How does the Sprite effect the red wine's taste? :listen: I've done a white wine spritzer thingie like this before but never tried it in my red wine.

I too have no issues finishing a bottle of wine. Even worse, I usually don't have to share with anyone either to get the job done if it's a good enough wine.

Totally agree with the notion of "leftover wine" :rotfl: ~ not a problem here often :scared1:

Sprite Zero in red wine basically turns it into a generic Sangria. Add fruit and mint and ice for a more "authentic" version..... but with sprite added it should be drunk cold :drinking1 :tilt: :drinking1 :tilt:

Never had a Sangria. I'm off to the store on Friday. :thumbsup2 This I must try!

Let us know what you think!:dumbo:

I was in Albertson's today and they had Trove brand (as in treasure.....) half price! Normally 20/box on clearance for 10/box! I LOVE this brand so I'm stoked :goodvibes

I also cut old towels, tees and sheets and use as rags.

We also use butter containers as tupperware; not to mention sour cream, cottage cheese, etc.

I also buy cheap vinyl tablecloths at the $1 stores and use them for my kids to do crafts on. We also line the minivan with a couple when we go on road trips.

I make play dough for the kids and make homemade mac-n-cheese instead of buying.

If there's a way for me to stretch something I'll find it...all our juices are watered down. I buy store brand sodas, esp root beer.

We cut up the credit cards a couple of years ago and, if there's something we want, we save for it. If it's not worth saving for than we didn't need it.

One of my favorite quick budget meals is:

Saute in 2T evoo one foil packet of yellow (saffron) rice, the bigger packet. Saute until golden. Then add 1 can drained cooked chicken, 1 can either rotel tomatoes (if you're in the mood for Mexican) or Italian diced tomatoes (for Italian), and 1 1/2 cans water. Bring to boil, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Sometimes I sprinkle a little shredded cheese on top but it's not absolutely necessary. My kids LOVE it!

I also make a chicken enchilada casserole where I toss in a bowl: 1 can drained chicken, cheddar soup, cream mushroom (or celery) soup, 2 small cans green chiles (very mild) or 1 can rotel tomatoes and a couple big handfuls of tortilla chips (yes chips). Pour in baking dish sprayed with Pam and top with shredded cheese. Bake for 20-25 minutes on 325. Your family will love you. :lovestruc The chips hold up better in the mixture than tortillas and don't end up as mushy when baked. Plus it's soooo easy!

I love to cook and -up until I met my mil - would have balked at using canned chicken but, in casseroles, it's actually great!

I read someone describing how they make tuna patties. We do this with canned salmon. I LOVE the big can of bread crumbs at Wal Mart. My goodness I use it in meat loafs, squash casserole bake, corn bake, patties, you get the idea. When my bananas start going brown I stick them in the freezer so they turn black quickly and make banana bread.

And I've found that dawn dish soap and baking soda make a great shampoo for when your toddler smears A&D diaper ointment in the hair. :scared1:

Hydrogen peroxide also has many uses.

I also consign my children's clothes from the previous season each year at one of the big biannual sales in my area. I also volunteer to work it so I get in early at the presale, where I buy ALL my kids' clothes, costumes, shoes and just about everything else they need. In fact, our fall sale started yesterday and I was in the first presale group. I paid $200.80 for all 3 of my children's fall wardrobe including 12 outfits each, 3 coats, 2 lightweight jackets, 4 costumes, 3 tights, 6 toys, step stool, disney princess castle, tinkerbell castle with figures, and 4 pair of sports pants for soccer practice. And we're not talking cheap clothes. All the outfits I bought for my daughter were Kash Ten tie dye dresses (tags still on brand new retailed $54 each!), Oilily, Gymboree, Janie-N-Jack (one sundress I bought for $7 last spring I sold late summer on ebay for $109 plus shipping!!!!!!, Rubbies, etc. You get the picture. Search for Just Between Friends or other big consignment sales in your area. They are worth it and so addictive! My volunteer time is 9-2 tomorrow. I picked that time because, since the 1/2 off sale starts at 9, those of us working it get to shop an hour early!

When your 2 year old smears Vaseline :scared1: in her hair, sprinkle corn starch in her hair before shampooing! It may take several washes and dries, but it will EVENTUALLY come out. Until then, hide in the house!

Not really to do with Vaseline but baby powder removes BEACH SAND ( I live in Fla) like a DREAM!! I keep a trial size bottle in my car and another in my beach chair at all times! At times I have had so much sand in my swimsuit I could have sworn I was forming a pearl :rotfl:

I really love this thread, such great ideas. I love saving money, especially when I can add it to my Disney bottle. We have a large old glass sparklets bottle that we put change and bills in for quick home savings. When we are getting ready for our WDW trip we empty it out, turn it into bills and we have our spending money. Painless :)

VAgal76 :wave2: I'm with you on the wine bottle issue. I have not problem finishing off a bottle before it turns.

We have several in the wall AC units. Do you think this would work as well as the clear stuff they put on to insulate windows (which I usually use to cover the inside of the AC units)?

I guess the only way to know is to try......:confused3 Depends on the cost of the clear stuff vs press n seal?

Do you mean the press n' seal saran? Do you think it would help to redirect heat/ac in to other areas.

At my business one room is extremely hot while the other is cold as the dickens in the winter. When I had the furnace repair person out he said it was set up "lopsided" & the majority of the vents are in the hot room. He said I could cover the vents to redirect the air. I'm just wondering if the press n' seal would do the trick. I'd rather us something less noticeable than a giant piece of cardboard!
