Best Online Photo Sharing/Storage Sites?

Two other things I wanted to mention: You can download the Phanfare Photo client to multiple computers and manage from all of them. So for example, you can download the system from work and home, and access your collection from both places.

Also, we support video blogging so theoretically you should be able to put videos right into this forum, although I can not test that since I have not posted enough times in this forum to earn the right to put in HTML according to the error msg I got when I tried!

I'll try posting a video. I only have one clip - no comments from the peanut gallery! And I don't really know how to do this - but I'll give it a try...

hmmm...can't figure out how to embed html code or javascipt in my message. Maybe we can't do this.

Yay! I'm so glad that other people have found the Phanfare info useful. :) I went ahead and purchased a year of service from them and I was pleasently surprised to get an email from Phanfare thanking me for choosing a service plan and letting me know that they won't be charging my card until after my 30 day preview is up. Very cool. Oh, and I just got my first weekly web traffic report from Phanfare - another cool feature. You can access reports that let you know how many visits you've had to your Phanfare site and you can even break it down by albums visited per day. Good Stuff.

Oh, and since HTML posting is not allowed on this site, video embedding won't work right now... but I've successfully embedded a video on my webpage. Works great! You can check it out if you want to see it in action (a short clip of a fire twirler from the Poly luau dinner show).

Aliwolly is right - embedded HTML and code are not allowed on The DIS. It's depressed quite a few of us, but security rules.

For those that might not know, it's very unusual to have a principal from an organization like Phanfare come to a site like this to even answer simple questions like what we had. It's nice to hear that the data is protected from loss and downtime - even on my own webserver I can't boast specs like that.

Andrew - thanks for the info and assurances. It's too bad you're in NJ - it'd be too long of a commute to work for Phanfare. :) And for those who want to know what Andrew looks like:

This is a test - one of the reasons I wanted a new photo storage place was because my photos show up so small when I post them here. Here's one I'm posting from phanfare to see how big it shows...

OK - I'm sold!

you can post thumbnails, small, medium and large. But then your photos are subject to the compression they use. Which is not terrible.

I am not familiar with phanfare, it may be a better site. I'm just offering some info.

I've had a few photos posted on imagestation just so I could post them here and even though I uploaded nice big shots when they show up on this board they are very small with pretty poor resolution. There weren't any options to change that. I already really like phanfare - and I'm getting inspired to get all my photos uploaded into albums I can share.

Just wanted to let you all know that indeed Disney does hold a special place in our heart. Although I am up in NJ with the rest of the Phanfare crew, our CTO and co-founder Mark Heinrich can not be persuaded to venture far from the mouse. Indeed, he lives in Celebration!

We originally created Phanfare because we wanted to solve the family photo and video sharing problem for ourselves. You will notice a few key things about the service: it scales really well for large collections over time; your collection has a feel of being your private walled garden, versus somebody else's eyeball aggregation play; we play well with others (print to Shutterfly, Kodak, or Snapfish, blog your videos, it is all fine with us); and we have payed particular attention to the social conventions around sharing family albums

To the last point, if you password protect your Phanfare collection, you can still send an invitation to a particular album that hides the rest of your collection from the viewer. This lets you, for example, invite a co-worker to see your photos of your recent Disney trip, without giving him that too-much-information feeling that he might get if you handed him the keys to your entire castle, including beach and birth pictures!

We see all of you as the sweet spot of our target market, so if Phanfare does not meet your needs, just let us know.

Best regards,

Andrew

Ok, voice of semi-reason here. Having an online photo storage site is really awesome for sharing, but I would NOT consider it a primary location for archiving your photos. I would continue to use it, but I would also look into other off-site (not at home) local storage options. You have no control whatsoever if that site goes out of business and the company sells off their equipment pretty quick. You have NO way to get those photos back. It HAS happened before.

Every single picture I take is saved to a CD or DVD and a copy is saved on my shelf and a copy goes into my safe deposit box. I look at it this way - a tornado might destroy my house and bank (which are pretty close), but it's unlikely it can get all three locations.

I think your pretty safe on the safe deposit box alone. HEHE. have you seen them tear down and old bank. I saw a demolition team take WEEKS to finish destroying the "SAFE" room. I doubt a tornado could either. BUT never hurts to be prepared. Computers crash and cd's get scractch or lost. I love having them "online" too. BUT they get resized and its harder to get nice prints with them reduced.

Do those others keep them at full size??? Phanfare or whatever

Phanfare does keep your full size pictures. They display websized ones in your gallery, but you can always download the full size picture. They also use the full size pictures for when you order prints from one of their partner companies. :)

I always upload the full size file.

Phanfare keeps your fullsize original images without any compression whatsoever. If you edit a photo within the system, we keep the edited version and the original fullsize image so that you can rollback to the original version if you later decide you don't like the edits.

Our workflow is unique though. When you drop a fullsize image in our client, a websized version is sent up to the service first. That happens in 1/20th the time it takes to send the fullsize images. Hence, you can see your website in finished form and share your site with friends/family while we continue to upload the fullsize images in the background.
