Since you are obviously a military family, have you checked out condo availability on the Armed Forces Vacation Club?
You can get great deals on condos in the area, and just stay there for one trip rather than making two separate trips.
Just a thought.

www.afvclub.com ?

I did almost the same thing last time I was down and I stayed at Celebration Suites at Old Town. I actually got them on priceline for about $26 a night. (I think the regular rate is closer to $50 which may or may not be worth it) The rooms were HUGE. Had a living room, a small kitchen and a large bedroom. The living room had a pull down murphy bed. For the money, it was GREAT. BUT...the place is slightly run down and the breakfast they offer is not very good. But for a clean, cheap place to stay, can't beat it.

Since you're adding the water parks to your tickets, you have up to 8 days of park time available to you. It depends on how you allocate your park time, but if I was doing it, I would stretch it out as much as possible.
You could do a whole week at one of the Armed Forces Vacation Club places the second time around which could potentially include a full kitchen which would aid in bringing your own food. Some of these places go for only $369/week, depending on when you go.

Of property, in general, is definitely cheaper, but it depends on how much you're willing to spend.

We have a june (single night) reservation at the Knights Inn just off property for $25 a night. Don't expect much but as long as there are no bugs we are good to go. If you want to spend a little more consider Seralago. It is a nice simple hotel that is pretty close to Disney

Have you tried any of the hotels in DTD on Hotel Plaza Blvd? Most of them offer some kind of military discount....we have stayed at the Best Western and the Grovsnor (now Wyndam)... The Hilton offers extra magic hours and they do have thier own transportation. The busses however DO NOT drop you off where the disney buses drop off. For example it drops you off at the TTA instead in front of MK so you will need extra time...Oh an some charge resort fee/parking...
It might be cheaper to book a room only discount at a value depending on when you travel...
